I suspect Raven's Crime is really bad right now. Between Phoenix and Hogaak, there are a lot of decks which want to discard specific cards in their hand. You want your discard to pick away Stitcher's Supplier and Pyromancer Ascension , not Bridge from Below and Arclight Phoenix .

This is some beautiful formatting and a slick list. How do you Planeswalkers work this chicanery so? Cough it looks sweet. Is there a reason why there havent been posts as to how to do this type of epic formatting? Or have I missed it?

Thanks Nerdytimesorwhatever!
I’ve some links tucked in at the bottom of the deck description for formatting.

Radical new change. I really like it though. I admit I'm skeptical that mainboard Leyline is good because it does nothing against a lot of the meta. But overall I like it. Hexdrinker especially.

Lol. I’m determined to have a fighting chance against degenerate decks.

All the power to you! Personally, I've decided I'm just going to lose to Hogaak and I'm going to focus on other matchups instead. And when I get paired against Hogaak I'll probably just concede the match as soon as I see what they're playing.

Even if I sideboard super hard for Hogaak, I'm going to lose game 1 about 95% of the time. Let's say I can get my post-board to 40% to win. I know I can get there, and I don't think I can do much better without huge losses in other matchups. Then my match win percentage is still only 17%. Not worth it at all.

The real challenge is that if I remove all my graveyard hate then I'm vulnerable to whatever poor dredge player is still around.

Yeah. I've gotten a few suggestions to keep leylines in the SB for the reasons you stated. I sort of went all out here with Hexdrinker and GY Hate MB. Probably not a realistic approach to a deck that wants to be 50/50. Conceding to Hogaak sounds like the better plan since it will be banned in a week anyway. (Fingers crossed)

Ha, I wish. I'm expecting no changes. It's Eldrazi Winter all over again, except now it's Hogaak Summer. In the eyes of WOTC, Hogaak is selling packs of Modern Horizons. (He's a $5 card, so clearly he's not selling $8 packs, but WOTC isn't very smart.) If history sets any precedent, WOTC will take no action until Modern Horizons is out of print.

The best case scenario, to me, is if WOTC bans Bridge from Below . Then at least sweepers become almost okay against them and they can't use the mill combo. And it'd be nice to see Manamorphose get the hammer too. And in Magical Christmas Land they'll unban Twin, SFM, and Pod. After those unbannings and bannings, modern can maybe start to be fun again. And in that world Jund would still be a great deck. Bloodbraid Elf and Kolaghan's Command stomp all over a fair meta.

ToolmasterOfBrainerd well whadaya know?

Still, I think the heyday of GBx is over. Goyf is too fragile to current removal options, barely goes over the standard aggro package, K-command isnt versatile enough to deal with wide decks, Lili cant establish a hard lock like she used to, Elf is too slow and (frankly) sucks as a card against teferi, humans and phoenix. IMHO GBx is on its way to be a hall of famer more than a first draft pick. Sold out of Abzan a few weeks ago before the Bridge Ban and im glad because my Catacombs were still above $70 at moderately played condition. Overall I think for GBx to become viable again we will need a solid replacement for almost every card (because good stuff decks, where good stuff is outclassed, die from anemia not from any specific matchup).

Trophy and Wren&6 were a good start. Hexdrinker looks promising too. But I think it’s gonna be a while before we see a consistent build of top-of-the-meta tools available. Jund, GBx as a whole is nothing more than the best cards in the best colors, and currently that's not the case like it used to be.

Not to dump on the primer, I wish you the best of luck and will be checking out the archtype to see how it evolves. I suspect a bridge to mana denial will be the next logical transformation if we can’t deal with the board state. Good luck OP.

Chasmolinker Historically, Grixis is really good at beating Jund. With the new toys in Jund, I'm now slightly terrified of the matchup. Your cards are extremely hard to 1-for-1. For the first time in a long time I feel the need to adapt to have a good Jund matchup.

I feel like the upcoming meta is going to be really good. The new Urza Sword decks and Mentor decks are super sweet. UW Control and Jund at the top tables ensure there will be fair matchups every once in awhile. If Neoform and Infect catch on, then interactive decks will be in a great spot. Especially because then even the aggro decks are forced to interact since the Infect kill is faster. I think the unfun crap might be a little bit behind us for a short while. At least, I hope so.

Can I try to sell you some theory for why Elvish Reclaimer could be really good in Jund? I'm convinced the card has potential, and that Jund is the right place to play it.

If you play it turn 1, then you can tutor Bojuka Bog turn 2. And then another one turn 3 if you need it. That should do something vs Hogaak and Phoenix.

If your UW Control opponent plays Baby Teferi turn 3, then you can tutor Treetop Village and kill their Teferi no matter what they do. In general, tutoring a manland can increase your pressure, which is good vs UW and Tron.

If you have Wrenn and Six, you can find your Nurturing Peatland to get the engine going.

If you are playing vs Tron, on turn 2 you can tutor for Ghost Quarter , then on turn 3 crack quarter and tutor up Field of Ruin , and crack Field of Ruin on 4.

Against Humans, a 3/4 is actually big enough to matter in combat in the early turns. Especially because it can block as a 3/4 on turn 2, just like a Goyf. It's admittedly less good vs Humans than other matchups, but Humans should be a decent matchup regardless.

I think the card is great, but I also haven't played with it yet, and I don't know what you would take out to include it.

Interesting points ToolmasterOfBrainerd... I guess it boils down to, "Would Jund run Crop Rotation if it were printed into modern?" And I think it most definitely would, especially with Wrenn and Six being a powerhouse. I REALLY like the idea of tutoring up Bojuka Bog against Dredge and other GY decks.

However, Elvish Reclaimer 's , activation cost is very slow compared to Crop Rotation and can make resources clunky. It's a mana sink that would do better in a GR Lands variant in Modern than a Jund list. I feel like a single copy of Life from the Loam would be a better tech option.

The 3/4 Body is solid, don't get me wrong. But, it doesn't make the cut for me.

August 2, 2019 1:31 p.m.

Seems reasonable. I'm going to try to brew a deck around it. The only problem is I can't afford Wrenn and Six, so I'm not sure what the deck will be doing.

I’m really holding off on the 3rd copy until more print runs come out. If there even are any more. Bumming me out that foil is $300+

Is the SFM unban a good thing for Jund?

August 26, 2019 6:04 p.m.

If you play more Kolaghan's command, then yes. Jund likes when there are a lot of midrange slugfests. And the faithless looting carpet was just pulled out from under the unfair meta, so it should be a good time for Jund coming up.

How have seasoned pyro + tracker felt in what usually are the bob slots lately? Also, unrelated to the deck, how do you add a match report section on tappedout?

DotaFerShota Honestly Seasoned Pyromancer should be another Tireless Tracker . But, I haven’t played this deck recently. I’ve been pretty busy lately (more than normal). As for the match report I just used html tables for that.

Since you're revamping the primer, I'll steer the discussion towards a more subjective, less thought-provoking topic. How are you enjoying the Modern metagame right now?

April 1, 2020 8:57 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #22

Haha DarkStarStorm. Nice segue.
Well aside from Amulet Titan decks, I'm liking the metagame with regards to Jund's position. Even still, with the semi-recent banning of Once Upon a Time the deck is more in line with lists prior to Throne of Eldraine. Which even though it is a bad match-up, it's beatable G1 with some luck and G2 after SB with Grafdigger's Cage, Fulminator Mage, and Assassin's Trophy.

Everything is a wash though if they get Primeval Titan out early. Dryad of the Ilysian Grove can make that happen if not dealt with. It used to be that leaving in Lightning Bolt was preferred G2 but Dryad of the Ilysian Grove makes Fatal Push slightly better.
It's definitely a bad match-up and I could see going to 3 or even 4 Assassin's Trophy to combat it. Pillage could take the place of Ancient Grudge as a flexible card in addition to Fulminator Mage since i can also hit Amulet of Vigor if they leave it in.

I'm confidant in the other match-ups for now. Burn is always slightly less than 50/50 but that's pretty much the case with almost every Modern deck against Burn.

Have you played against the "new" Ad Nauseam? Thassa's Oracle has brought it back to the limelight as it is now more capable of getting a turn three win. Obviously your discard package will keep it from being a disadvantageous matchup, but it can stumble into wins a bit more easily.

April 1, 2020 10:14 p.m.

Chasmolinker says... #24

I haven't seen that one. Like you said though, not really a match-up I would really worry about. Just checked around and it doesn't seem to be putting up too many numbers. There was one guy at my LGS who played it 1 or 2 years ago. So, he might bring it back with Thassa. Unless they're sticking multiple Thassa's though I don't see it making a big impact.

The more and more I think about it, I'm really considering cutting Maelstrom Pulse for a third Assassin's Trophy.

April 2, 2020 8:17 a.m.

Chasmolinker says... #25

Yea. It's a done deal. With Eldrazi Tron and Amulet running around, I don't have time to wait for Maelstrom Pulse. Plus Assassin's Trophy hits all the lands if needed. Pulse is cut. For now.
