In short, I was shown what was referred to as a "peasant" format around 10 years ago (or a little longer). Within the setup, you were allowed up to 5 uncommon cards and no rares. Lowest rarity printed for the card is counted. I threw this together a little while back using this basis for building it. It's shown itself to be effective in games I've ran, usually against decks in legacy/modern formats.
