UWR Delver Burn

Modern

sjis

Sideboard

Ok, so this deck plays very similarly to Rw burn, and has pretty much the same matchups, so I won't talk about those in detail. Rather, I'll highlight the differences between the decks I've found in testing them.

The main downside is the obvious one-- we take more damage off our lands, and are about half a turn slower on average. This makes the "mirror" match against burn, although winnable, definitely bad for us. Spell pierce helps, and having access to the full 4 lightning helix (plus serum visions to find them) helps, but even so this matchup is 40 /60, maybe even worse. Burn isn't too prevalent in my meta, but if you expect to face a lot of it this deck may not be the best choice.

So, on to the upsides. There are three major reasons I've found to play burn with a blue splash.

  1. Serum Visions is amazing. It makes 1 land hands exponentially more keepable, and finds gas late game. You lose to your own deck less.

  2. The sideboard. Remand and spell pierce have been excellent for me. Remanding siege rhino's, splinter twins, and wurmcoil engines has been excellent for me. Also, people don't play around counter magic from the burn deck.

  3. Blind flipping a delver of secrets on turn two is an easy way to ride to some free wins.

All of this together means I've felt that my matchups against twin and amulet-bloom are better than straight burn, and my tron and junk matchups are much better. In addition, despite being a turn slower, affinity has been about the same. Serum visions to aggressively scry for creature removal, and delver as a flying blocker offset the extra 2 or 3 damage from our lands.

One thing to note is the lack of snapcasters. They have significantly underperformed for me. I went from 3 in the main, to 2, to 1 with 1 in the board, to not even having them. They felt just slow and clunky, and our creature count is already on the high end for reliably flipping a delver. I could be wrong about this.
