It's mostly in the fact that you can keep your opponent from having creatures on the board and cards in their hand. Thus, making them open for attacks. This deck was built for 12 bucks. So it wasn't made to be extremely competitive, but still fun to play.

you have 4x Mizzium Skin in both mainboard and sideboard. You can only have 4 combined. Other than that, fun deck! If you can afford it, you could take out the guildgate for Temple of Deceit . Oh, and +1!

Oh whoops! Thanks for pointing that out!

This deck is awesome! My brother (Gavin) is a Grixis nut (he's currently testing Modern Grixis Rise/Fall) so he will think this is AWESOME (which it is).

I (Taylor) tend to build green-centric decks. Gavin will be here in a few minutes and I will have him take a look at this; as he will be super excited to see it and can add any suggestions (if there are any at all to be made!)

+1 of course (but that goes without saying :)

So, these suggestion may be a bit cmc intensive which may require you to tinker with your land base but here's what I got. Mindreaver , Gift of Orzhova , and Fate Foretold .

Mindreaver alongside Fate Foretold goes something like this. Play the Mindreaver. Enchant him with Fate Foretold. Draw a card. Exile the top 3 cards of their library. At a later time, tap 2 blue and counter a spell with Mindreaver. Draw a card. Every time you target your creature your opponent exiles cards which does a number things in your advantage, such as:

  1. Denies your opponent cards.

  2. Possibly gives you an additional counter spell as well as a way to continue to deny cards in future turns.

  3. The counter spell becomes incredibly strong with Fate Foretold as it essentially combines the best parts of Counterspell and Remand . It puts their spell into the graveyard rather than their hand which is a plus, as well as Remand's card draw. Also, a plus.

Gift of Orzhova is just a very solid card. It will give you lifelink to sustain/stabilize as well as flying. The harder your creature is to block the more cards that Bident of Thassa will draw you. The life also helps take the sting from Read the Bones .

And this could be just me personally but I like Tormented Hero as a better 1 drop in this deck than the Nivmagus Elemental . Again, just me.

Stratus Walk may be worth considering too.

Those are AWESOME suggestions Midwest I really like Mindreaver although I may keep in place Ordeal of Thassa over Fate Foretold . However my question to you is, Can the cards exiled by Mindreaver be played with my Nightveil Specter ?

I have considered Gift of Orzhova before but not sure which card to replace it with.

Tormented Hero is an awesome card and also helps with the burn from Read the Bones as well as any other damage done. And their are pro's and con's to both Tormented Hero and Nivmagus Elemental . I can cause damage to and gain health with tormented hero with out exiling a spell with Tormented Hero . But with Nivmagus Elemental I can exile a spell (as well as exile ciphered spells from Hidden Strings to pump him up, giving me a big hitter and a big blocker which also makes him harder to kill. Im leaning a little more towards Nivmagus Elemental but I definitely see where you're coming from. I may playtest with that a little bit though

Mindreaver won't feed into Nightveil Specter .

Ok thank you jimlandiaman, that's what I figured. I know that you cant play cards exiled from another Nightveil Specter

Tested this deck again tonight and was able to get all the additions i made with the exception of one Chromatic Lantern . And even though I didnt get to play the lantern this did EXTREMELY well. Needless to say Im strongly hated now lol. Even beat a Rakdos haste/burn deck. Was able to protect my important creatures and making him pay for even trying. Really impressed so far but not completely sold on Ordeal of Thassa . May look into adding more protection with those 2 slots rather than card draw.

CurdBrosBrewingCo Tell me what you think of the changes I made. Id also really like to do some more playtesting on cockatrice if you have a chance this weekend

Great stuff, thanks for sharing! If you don't need the scry of Dissolve , you could always consider swapping it for Syncopate . You could save yourself an extra bit of mana to target another heroic card with a cheap instant :)

+1

Thanks! I dont have any Dissolve 's yet for this deck so I have been using Syncopate In it's place. I like how Syncopate has been playing so it may stay.

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver ? Goes great with Nightveil Specter. Far / Away for some removal and Hero's Downfall for some more removal but more importantly, planeswalker removal

I've always been told that I couldnt play any cards exiled unless it was exiled with Nightveil Specter ? I have been trying to get my hands on some Far / Away for a while now but no one seems to have any

My sideboard also needs a lot of work.

EsoEric says... #19

You can't play cards you just exile, like with other removal cards or whatever, but with certain cards you can. Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver works very similar to Nightveil Specter . Just read her abilities and you'll see.

I understand her abilities. She may be a sideboard option. But Im not sure shes a mainboard option.

what about Retraction Helix targeting the Agent of Fates. kill for the heroic and tap to ping a permanent back to their hand or yours?

April 17, 2014 12:29 a.m.

Frytrix99 says... #22

Hidden Strings say that you target another permanent.. i'm not sure that you can target 2 time the same one. And when you overload with Mizzium Skin you don't "target" your creatures, cause you replace target with each. So you don't trigger Heroic. Well... correct me if i'm wrong, but, this is what i think. Beside that, you have a good deck. I like how you use heroic ability.

Giregar says... #23

I like the idea of that deck. +1I just wanna tell you, that you can't focus the same creature twice with just one hidden strings. Hidden Strings says "One permanent and ANOTHER permanent". But still, a good combo.

Vito1014 says... #24

This comment is for all of you since you all brought up the subject. Hidden Strings Allows me to tap or untap a target permanent THEN tap or untap ANOTHER target permanent. ANOTHER doesnt mean it has to be a different target. SaltySpecula or ScotchMTGFanboy would be able to verify and/or explain the process.

enon_joesph I had Retraction Helix in here for a long time but with Nightveil Specter and Syncopate making their way in, Retraction Helix found it's way out.
