• Why Curses?

I like the flavor of curse decks, I enjoy piloting them, and I like the challenge of making an admittedly non-optimal strategy work.

  • Weakness of curses in EDH

While fun (for me) curses are pretty weak in a multiplayer format for reasons that are immediately apparent to even newer players:

  1. They target only one opponent.
  2. While developing curses you neglect your board presence, leaving you open to your other opponents.
  3. When the unlucky target of your curses dies, each and every one of your curses die with them.

That 3rd point is the biggest issue for a curse-themed deck in a multiplayer format. In a 4-player game, if you spread you curses around the board they have a very reduced effect, and they make you a target for the board. On the other hand, while focusing all your spite on dooming one player is effective, when they finally meet their end you are left with an underdeveloped board against two much stronger opponents.

  • Why Karador?

A five-color curse deck wants it all, and while it's fun to be able to play every curse in the game, 5-color curse decks suffer from (dare I say it) too many curses and not enough focus. Does Curse of the Bloody Tome really belong in a deck with no other mill? Abzan has what I want, curses that weaken a target and make him/her an easier target for the other players, cards that make me a less appealing target, cards that keep my opponent boards in check, cards that let me recur an enchantment or two, and cards that bring my entire catalog of curses back from the graveyard so I can retarget my spite after the last unfortunate soul gave up the ghost.

That last bit is important. Playing a card like Second Sunrise the turn your cursed patsy dies can make the game yours.
