I'll quote Ebonclaw from an mtg salvation forum:
''They do provide a very marginal amount of deck thinning. It's a misconception that it's a tremendously beneficial amount, but for decks interested in absolutely maximizing the number of spells they draw, they'll take any and all help they can get. Monored burn, for instance, utilizes this strategy to give a marginal, however small, bit of thinning for every little chance to draw that last bolt instead of a mountain. Other decks, however, would rather not lose the life for such a marginal benefit if they're running a longer game plan, though the deck thinning benefit increases the longer the game goes.''

Thanks for the info and I get the deck thinning thing now. Still a tough choice with this deck in my opinion, and with my luck I always seem to either get flooded or starved for land. I was thinking 20 Island and 2 Nykthos instead it also allows you another instant.

Yeah well I've inspiring myself from past blue devotion decks (ravnica). At first I was really trying to understand their choice of running 24 lands, but then it all became clear to me : Thassa, God of the Sea... Her 2 mana ability is used on the Master of Waves tokens for the extra damage! Also, looking at probabilities of dropping a land per turn, running less than 23 would make the 4th land drop too small. The 24 to 23 drop is already a significant one, but since I run cheaper creatures than past devotion decks I guess I can go without the 4th mana for a turn or two.

Nobody's mentioned Torrent Elemental yet? Why would we not be running it here?
February 2, 2015 2:59 p.m.
@ Shammikaze
Nobody mentioned it, but it was on my huge list of blue cards when I was scheming the deck.
Upside: it's an elemental, it has flying.
Slight/not that relevant upside : it taps all oponent's creatures... but 16 of my creatures already have evasion and Thassa, God of the Sea can give the elemental tokens evasion too..
Downside : it's 5 CMC and it does not pair with my deck's strategy. At that cost, I'd almost rather play Jace, the Living Guildpact which would serve devotion as well as bouncing a creature... when you're considering playing Jace, the Living Guildpact over a card, I guess it's pretty much out of the question.
Conclusion : Torrent Elemental is too slow for my deck. Its tap out ability is irrelevant since I already have a lot of evasion. Finding a spot for it in the deck would completely wreck the strength I have right now.

i think Neutralizing Blast may do okay in the sideboard, same with Nullify
Really like the deck. +1 from me! im trying to whip it up to see how i do in my competitive meta.

Just saying, but since the whole point is to ramp up blue devotion, you could run Thassa's Rebuff. If not main board then at least side board against all them board wipes.

Hey man, love the deck! +1'd. Just a thought. Chasm Skulker. Combo-ed with the Bident or any draw you add (Treasure Cruise, Divination, Ingenuity, etc.) he can become big QUICK, and when he dies you still get the blue islandwalk tokens, who still get buffed from the Hall of Triumph. I'm thinking of rocking this deck the next time I can get away from school and head to FNM. Great work, keep it up!

I would have kept in the Polluted Delta, sometimes the thinning is worth it and stuff in the graveyard isnt bad because it opens up Treasure Cruise. In my build, I have 4 deltas because I side into Jorubai Murk Lurker and a single Swamp against burn decks.

I strongly recommend Omenspeaker and/or Taigam's Scheming to set up your deck early especially if you have a cloudform or 2 in hand.
A Cloudformed Frost Walker or Thassa is a nasty beast.

I'd recommend putting this under budget as well, at least for now, it's pretty awesome and I'd love to try it out! I haven't seen a mono blue deck with creatures in my experience of playing magic. (started in rtr so..nothing to great.. But I'm definitely still learning) I'll probably buy this deck the moment I have the money. Looks like a ton of fun! +1

This is basically the same idea I had for my Budget Standard Monoblue Devotion
I use Paragon of Gathering Mists over Hall of Triumph and I don't have a Thassa yet, but overall very similar list.
I've found Triton Tactics and Quickling to be invaluable for dodging removal.
The star of my deck list is Military Intelligence though. It provides absurd card advantage

I've had a mono blue built for months now that my uses from time to time when she comes on Fridays. I highly reccomend Military Intelligence. We stumbled upon that card early in building and noticed the games it was out went much better. So we put 4 in. The deck has placed 4th once and top 3 every other time its been used which totals about 5 times since we added that card. I also need to update the deck list for this site since frf came out. Our decks are just a few cards different of each other. Give me about 2 hours from the time of this post to make the changes. I'll link it in another reply as I can't remember its name right now and am posting this off my phone. I do know another system we use that you don't is the Daring Thief pressure. Since he swaps creatures you take a creature they have and give them a master token. It becomes 1/0 when they get it and dies. So you take theirs for nothing basically. We also utilize Triton Tactics to counter other aggro, anger, and to instant speed activate thirds swap. It gives our deck tricks this one can't pull off. I'll get you that link asap. Good to see others working on this cheap deck that's quite effective.

Quickling over Vaporkin you loose the elemental aspect but the save they have given me in my deck has well been worth it and can jump block as well if needed.

here is the link to my own. sorry its a bit late, got home from work an hour later than i expected. so far this deck has placed top 4 every time its been used in this form or a close version of it with my wife using it. she hasnt gotten the flow of the game mechanics down perfect yet but still manages to beat veteran players. i took it one week just to see how i could do, and only lost 1st by the skin of my teeth, he top decked the exact card he needed to win on game 3 the turn before i would have finished. its super solid, the Military Intelligence really bulks up your hand fast and leads to having exactly what you need when you need it. sadly nykthos is the card that about to get dropped, it never seems to be worth it and it could hinder you if you happened to draw 2 of them early.

did a quick best of 3 between my own and yours. you won the roll and went first. Triton Tactics flat out was the deciding factor in game 1. i was able to attack and block sniping off creatures. i also flashed in an early Quickling to block your Hypnotic Siren. Basically the tricks that my deck has available were able to get rid of yoru early threats while i was still able to attack.
for game 2 i "sided" in Negates instead of Disdainful Stroke for you since the only thing you can counter is my Master of Waves. game 2 you were able to win, but you had an empty hand at the end. i drew through 15 cards and saw 2 lands, which were both in the opening hand. so some back luck for my deck. essentially you were able to hit land drops every turn and finish it up.
Game 3: i was finally on the play and it was almost like game 1, only i was the one a turn ahead wich finished that game up much faster.
The benefit to Military Intelligence is that my winies early net me cards just for attacking, they dont even have to do damage, and they actually allow me to draw before damage is even calculated. if you get multiple militaries out, you sometimes draw a card that helps you respond to blocks before damage even happens, such as Quickling, Stubborn Denial, or Triton Tactics. i've been playing with mine for over 2 months now so we've had a lot of time to work out kinks with it.
I highly recomend taking a look at it, and somehow working in Quickling, Military Intelligence, and Stubborn Denial since it gets the ferocious bonus from Frost Walker.

A card i think is being overlooked here is Clever Impersonator in the sideboard. I think Triton Tactics could be much faster and better than Wall of Frost. It works nicely against Brimaz and the other vigilance creatures.

ceji3, i run impersonator in my sideboard, and triton is a crazy good card in any deck using blue. but this deck was made 3 days ago and mine is over 2 months old. so i've had tons of playtesting to discover those things.
