Since purchasing Draconic Invasion, I have been trying to construct a optimally tuned Ur-Dragon deck suitable for single-player and multi-player. Although the consensus is that Ur-Dragon will probably never be a tier 1 commander, he is still enormously fun to play and deserves a deck that treats his theme seriously. This deck was built with a medium-high budget in mind, so no duals/enemy fetches are included at the moment. The current mana base has treated me very well for the majority of the time and consists of mostly affordable (<$15) pieces. The decklist will be tuned over the following months through more play testing with comments.

Current Card Reviews (WIP)

==Core/Favorite Dragons==

Atarka, World Render: Poses a serious threat by itself. When you drop it (if it is not answered), the double strike it provides all of your in-play dragons dragons can be lethal. Keep in mind that double strike also triggers damage based abilities twice (e.g., Dragonlord Ojutai, Balefire Dragon etc)

Balefire Dragon: His ability is sometimes difficult to fire off without haste since it raises a gigantic red flag to your opponents, but fortunately the deck has 4 ways to provide it. As expected, when Balefire Dragon hits against creature based decks, the swing can be huge. The main battle is in getting the damage to connect especially if the targeted opponent has cheap fliers to block.

Bladewing the Risen: One of my favorite dragons to see mid/late game. Aside from the insane value resurrection provides, it also triggers "two dragons entering the battlefield". This means drawing 2 cards with temur ascendency/kindred discovery/elemental bond. It also means dealing at least 2+2 damage when you have Scourge of Valkas or dragon tempest on the board. More dragon etbs means more triggers!

Broodmate Dragon: Solid dragon for the deck. Splits its power across two bodies (dancing around targeted removal). Same "double dragon etb" benefit as Bladewing.

Dragonlord Dromoka: One of the premium dragons that I would argue is "worth the price" for this deck. Nothing feels worse than paying 5-7 mana for a spell and having it countered. Dragonlord Dromoka essentially provides you one "counter free" turn to play spells (since it can't be countered itself, and once it hits play, opponents cannot cast any spells on YOUR turn to deal with Dromoka). It is, however, still vulnerable to activated/triggered abilities from permanents already on the board.

Dragonlord Kolaghan: Giving your creatures haste is invaluable not only because of their P/T but also due to the sheer number of attack/damage based triggers most of the dragons possess. His second ability though, is useless in EDH.

Dromoka, the Eternal: One of the cheaper dragons at 5 mana. You can usually play him as a growing threat from turn 3-4, and he retains value well into the late game. The fact that bolster occurs per dragon that attacks can be pretty insane.

Hellkite Tyrant: Same argument as Balefire Dragon except with artifacts and he has trample. IF you get the activation off against certain decks, it can be very swingy. But again, the main battle is getting the damage through.

Savage Ventmaw: A bit of sensitive card (target-wise) to play that is most beneficial in the early-mid game. It is usually less threatening than Balefire Dragon or HellKite Tyrant, but people will still target it over other creatures on the board. If it survives, it provides an easy path towards casting your commander.

Scalelord Reckoner: Another early game dragon at 5 mana. When you drop it down early game, most players aren't too willing to 2-for-1 it at the cost of falling behind (in multiplayer games) which offers it a form of pseudo protection. Very solid dragon overall (especially at its cost) and awkward for your opponents to deal with.

Scion of the Ur-Dragon: Downside: It doesn't benefit from your commander's cost reduction. Upside: It can literally be ANY other dragon from your deck. Facing targeted removal? Transform it into Silumgar or Ojutai in response. Want a spell to go through? Copy Dragonlord Dromoka. Ready to finish the game? Turn into Atarka, World Renderer. Scion of the Ur-Dragon may be the best dragon in this deck. Lastly, dragons discarded by his ability can be resurrected at a later time by cards like Bladewing, Teneb, and Patriarch's Bidding.

Scourge of Valkas: The final 5 mana dragon, this card is an all-star; I would run 4 of these if I could. During its own etb, it can ping off a 1 toughness mana dork (e.g., birds of paradise). Follow this up with a broodmate dragon on turn 5 for 3+3 damage split as you choose. Its value persists through the late game and synergizes well with cards like Dragon Broodmother. I have dealt over 40 damage to opponents using his ability alone.
