This is an old list that I've continued to update over the year but stopped updating the list on tappedout. I'm going through my annual update of the deck, so I figured somebody out there would appreciate some of the updates and lessons I've learned playing Kaalia at high power tables but not cEDH.

  • Lesson 1: You don't need a ton of creatures in play. Focus on getting the powerful ones out when you need to win.
  • Lesson 2: Everyone is still here for fun. You don't need to make the deck insanely powerful. AKA read this as I know Dragon Mage is bad, I'm not removing it and this list will never be 10/10 optimized.
  • Lesson 3: There is a cap to this deck. Kaalia does not quite reach cEDH levels due to the prevalence of interaction and compact combos. This deck is meant for the highest levels of optimized casual EDH, not cEDH, and that's ok.
  • Lesson 4: play interaction. Stop just jamming creatures.
  • Lesson 5: Hate pieces are needed. They can change over time but cards like Grafdigger's Cage, Rest in Peace, Opposition Agent, and Grand Abolisher are necessary.
  • Lesson 6: Push for aggro but leverage value. You don't need to play aggro the entire time. Sometimes your role is to control the opponents for a couple turns while you set up. This means that a hand with 3 lands, 3 interactive pieces, 1 threat, and 0 ramp is keepable in the right context.
  • Lesson 7: Just make sure you're having fun. If you're like me and my fun is directly related to the overall fun of the table, try to hold bad or just swap off Kaalia when she's too strong or not a good fit for the table. You'll have fun with her another time.
