What about Vorapede instead of Avatar of Might for your sideboard?

December 17, 2015 9:40 a.m.

Peytongm says... #3

Vorapede is a little pricey, and you always have to pay its mana cost. It's not a bad card, but I don't think it's right for this deck.

This deck is so nice! Didn't see that coming! I only don't get the Gladecover Scout!

As a chump blocker, wouldn't be better: Jaddi Offshoot, Steel Wall, Wall of Vines, Pharika's Chosen, Sedge Scorpion, Wasteland Viper ??

Why not Wall of Blood? It costs 3 mana, so it's fetchable, and combos with Rite of Consumption as an alternate win condition, add Rogue's Passage as an utility land.

You have too much mana, I recommend cutting some mana producers and moving some of your sideboard cards to mainboard like Doom Blade and Golgari Charm

I'll consider both of those! Thanks, lil_cheez and Ixidron!

Essence Harvest is a good alternate win.

@Squirrel_of_War I like Essence Harvest as an alternate win con, but I'm concerned that it would be too expensive mana-wise. Sure, you might be able to play it if you get the combo out, but modern is a pretty fast format, and I'm not sure it would see as much action as Rite of Consumption.

February 5, 2016 8:23 a.m.

True but if rite gets countered your Quillspike is still dead because saccing it is part of the cost.

@Squirrel_of_War This is very true, however, if it is countered, you are probably playing against a control deck, or at least a deck with some control elements. That means blue, and blue creatures aren't exactly known for their blocking abilities. Instead of using Rite of Consumption in this case, I suggest the Primal Rage combo. That's what it's there for, after all. Of course, if you're building the deck, feel free to mess around with Essence Harvest, but you'll probably have to also change the mana curve a little. Good luck!

Isn't Vines of Vastwood just better than Ranger's Guile?

Peytongm says... #12

@RamblinMan Yes, I suppose it is!

This is just something to consider, though I'm sure you have already. I personally love Ambush Viper with its flash, hitting an attacking creature unexpectedly. One thing I don't like about it is how it has more power than is necessary and lacks the toughness to compensate. Deadly Recluse has been a bro to me ever since my first decks. He's still got the same CMC and can therefore be tutored, has a meager yet humble toughness that can survive small attackers, and has the added benefit of blocking/killing fliers (essentially a Wasteland Viper that likes to climb trees). Two benefits to this little arachnid are that he is an effective blocker/deterrent, boasting early-game deathtouch threats to the ground and air (like his humanoid cousin the Nighthawk), and that he encourages the opponent to use an early-game removal spell on him instead of a combo piece. Also, as he has presence in the sky, he removes the need for Plummet in your sideboard, clearing it up for better cards (while also not being a target by anti-flying cards himself unlike the Nighthawk).

On the same lines, I see Rancor on your maybe board. I believe it is a very good card comparable to Primal Rage, if not even a little better. Your main goal for it is to get through with a specific creature (Quillspike), so the trample granted to everyone by Primal isn't necessary. Rancor grants the trample you need with better recovery; assuming someone hits it with a Naturalize, Primal is done but Rancor is back in your hand. It's more pricey, but more reliable in a combo that needs (figuratively speaking lol) it.

And lastly I do agree with Ixidron, Golgari Charm is just too good a utility card to be sided instead of mained.

Again, just my opinion on it all. You may have even started with him and switched to the Viper as you saw fit. Regardless, excellent deck man and definitely a +1 from me.

@Hexcimal Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it. I do like Deadly Recluse, but for this deck, I do prefer Ambush Viper simply for the flash. It makes an excellent card for sticky situations, and allows me to play a creature on my opponent's end step, and have it ready to strike on my next turn.

As you have pointed out, Rancor is in my maybe board. I would like to see it used in this deck, however, it's a smidgen too expensive, and it has been rising in cost ever since Twin and Amulet Bloom decks became obsolete. If the price drops, you can rest assured I will put it in my deck. But in the meantime, I will enjoy the fact that Primal Rage has more than one use, just in case something were to happen to Quillspike during the combat phase.

Onto your finale point. Yes, Golgari Charm is an excellent utility card, but the fact of the matter is, there's nothing I'd like to use it to replace! All of my creature cards are solid, and all the rest of my cards are all but essential. If I am in need of it, I will sideboard accordingly, but for now, that's where it will reside.

Thanks so much for your input and +1, I do highly appreciate it. If you have any more comments, please feel free to leave them! I'm always glad to read responses!

Relic of Progenitusfor your last sideboard card?? Also maybe Kin-Tree Invocation? Not amazing but it gets the job done.

@Perfidy Relic of Progenitus is a bit expensive for this deck. I do like Kin-Tree Invocation, though, so I might add it to my sideboard. Thanks for your input!

@terastadon That's a big part of the deck to remove. I'll stick Weird Harvest in my Maybeboard for now, and maybe I'll decide to to add it in later. Thanks for your input!

The Devoted Druid + Quillspike deck was the first deck I ever made and I am happy to see it getting some love on Tapped out now. I don't know how willing you are to splash red, but I remember using Messenger's Speed to great avail.

May 12, 2016 11:39 p.m.

Essence Harvest and Necrotic Ooze as additional wincons.

Grisly Salvage to dig for your combo.

I agree with you splashing red, it will give you access to some great removal such as Lightning Bolt, Terminate, and Dreadbore.
