Kaalia of the Vast

Use Kaalia to cheat your bevy of demons, angels and dragons into play for explosive and crippling starts. Neuter your opponents' ability to retaliate with your suite of discard, removal and burn spells to ensure that they stay down.

Themes:

1. Explosiveness - Throw out huge creatures way ahead of their usual times.

2. Cards at a price - Once you've blown out your starting hand, refill at the cost of life (Necropotence, Promise of Power, Griselbrand) or giving your enemies cards too (Wheel of Fortune or Reforge the Soul.

3. Targeted disruption - You want to be the one making the plays, your removal and disruption is therefore primarily individual and targeted. Choose wisely.

Haymakers:

1. Griselbrand - Having earnt a ban from Commander for its card drawing abiities powering combo decks through to the win, old Grizzy holds its place in a combo-free metagame to refill your hand whilst being a massive demon.

2. Rakdos the Defiler - A crippling blow when with Kaalia, who bypasses his initial sacrifice. Alienating friendssince Ravnica block.

3. Avacyn, Angel of Hope - Removal getting you down? Say no to removal, in the form of an 8/8 flying goddess.

4. Iona, Shield of Emeria - The sole reason why we aren't using mono-coloured decks. Why react to your enemies' spells when they can't use them in the first place.

Tips:

You don't have to use Kaalia to put your creatures in!

Restoration Angel can make targeted disruption fizzle - once exiled, it's treated as a new permanent, so the spell can't find its target.

There are a lot of 2-cost mana accelerators, perfect for the turn 3 Kaalia.

Dropping Rakdos using Kaalia means that you don't have to sacrifice any permanents of your own as he was never declared as an attacker!
