Creature (1)

Four Color Midrange Modern Deck

Please comment if you have feedback! I love to hear new ideas!

Overview:

This is my current modern deck. The basic gameplan is to play efficient delve threats in Tasigur, the Golden Fang and card:hooting mandrils. The playsets of Serum Visions and Thought Scour. allow this to happen very ofen on turn two. Then the deck is looking to play efficient removal and back up the delve creatures with more threats and value generating cards. Abbot of Keral Keep and Scavenging Ooze can both come down on turn two and chip in for some damage, or later in the game and provide value. Savage Knuckleblade is a great mana sink in midrange matchups as it can come down and do some damage with haste while also dodging removal. Huntmaster of the Fells   and Vendilion Clique provide some utility. Althought none of the creatuers show up in full playsets the combination of cantrips and Kolaghan's Command give good card selection. Also many cards fill similiar roles such as Tasigur, the Golden Fang and card:hooting mandrils and Abbot of Keral Keep and Scavenging Ooze.

Match-ups

  • Combo (storm, ad nauseam, coco)- This deck can close games quickly against combo with efficient threats backed up by counterspells. Early threats are a must. Althought you do play counterspells combo decks will eventually win through them if you aren't providing pressure. Vendilion Clique is always great against combo decks, disruption and a clock all in one.

  • Aggro (zoo, burn, affinity)-Against burn Feed the Clan out of the sideboard is a huge help, delve threats completely brick-wall their creatures and Stubborn Denial is also very good. The ancient grudges in combination with thought scour really improve the affinity matchup. Overall against aggro decks you are looking for early threats and efficient removal. Bolt is and allstar and Stubborn Denial is very good against Atarka's command, cranial plating, and burn spells.

  • Midrange (abzan, jund, grixis)- in any midrange matchup the most important keys are to find value generating plays with Cryptic Command, Kolaghan's Command. Some of the creatures can also provide value such as Tasigur, the Golden Fang, abbot, knuckleblade, and Huntmaster of the Fells  . abbot should almost never be played turn two as they will likely have removal and the late game value can be huge. Scavenging Ooze should wait to be played until you have mana to dodge bolts. Tasigur, the Golden Fang activations can be a huge value engine in these matchups. Answering opponents threats is key.

Sideboard

The sideboard needs some work still but having access to stubborn denial is useful in many match-ups. ancient grudge is for lantern, affinity, and tron. Against decks that will certainly have acces to relic after boarding, I usually take out hooting mandrils as it is a little worse at full cost.

Why play this over Death's Shadow?

My opinion is that fatal push is just too good against death's shadow. Although their is recursion in the deck huge one mana threats with one mana answers just are not as impressive. This leaves delve creatures in a good spot as they can come down on turn two, shrink your opponents Tarmogoyf, and do not die to push. They also are not as dead to graveyard hate as a 6 mana 4/4 trample is still better than a 2 mana 0/1 Tarmogoyf. If you like Death's Shadow a very similiar feel but with pretty different threat selections.

Note: some choices are not ideal, abbot should be Snapcaster Mage and some lands should be swapped out for more on color fetchlands. These were budget considerations. Also I would love sideboard tips.
