Why Kenrith, Why Flash Hulk?

Let's face it, Kenrith, the Returned King cannot compete with Thrasios, Triton Hero+Tymna the Weaver as a mana-outlet deck.

They simply outclass the king.

However... Is Thrasios/Tymna the best option for Flash Hulk decks?

Let's talk...

So, why 5c Flash Hulk?

Siggy's Breakfast Hulk and Sickrobbot's Shuffle Hulk are arguabily the best 4c flash hulk deck at the moment. The fact they have an insane draw engine at the command zone with Thrasios, Triton Hero+Tymna the Weaver and they can win as early as turn 1-3 with Flash and Protean Hulk.

However, with 4c flash hulk, to be able to win in turn 1-3 you need those cards:

Those cards allow the win, but are shit on their own: they have no use, they hurt the Ad Nauseam lines and you cannot use the flash hulk combo if you have one of them in your hand.

BUT with 5c flash hulk we need those cards:

They are fewer, they are cheaper, they don't hurt the Ad Nauseam lines, and some of them are not completely useless (Vigean Graftmage can also combo with Bloom Tender for infinite mana and Incubation Druid is a decent mana dork)

And there is more...

5c Flash Hulk don't need the graveyard, which can be a problem in the actual meta.

We have our wincon in the commander zone, so it's always accessible.

With 5c we can (and we will!) use some power cards that RED has to offer, like:

Conclusion

This 5c Flash Hulk is an exciting new deck that can perform as good as Breakfast hulk in the 1-3 turns (when we have not get any card advantage from Thrasios/Tymna yet) and is more resilient in mid-long games due more interaction and high quality card density while being able to dodge targeted graveyard hate.

Yes, Thrasios-Tymna draw more cards, but we draw cards like Mana Drain or Red Elemental Blast instead of Angel of Glory's Rise ;)

Mulligan is your friend, a good fast starting hand would be 1 combo piece, 1 tutor, 1 mana accelerator, 2 lands and interaction. However you can chose a grindier initial hand depending on your opponent's decks and combo off on later stages.

Typical hand for 5c Flash Hulk turn 3 win:

  • Mulligan searching one of the pieces of the Flash Hulk combo (Flash or Protean Hulk), tutor the other piece and proceed to combo in turn 2-3 with some interaction. You can be greedy and execute it without interaction because it's not as risky as other Flash Hulk decks (throwing your entire library to the graveyard could be dangerous), and, if teh combo resolves, you win, if it doesn't, let's prepare our middle plan strategy.

5c Flash Hulk value midrange games:

  • If your opening hand is pure GAS but it doen't have neither Flash or Protean Hulk, Hey! I have good news for you: Your opponents don't know that. Please abuse the pressure that Flash applies to your enemies to take advantage and create a better board state than your opponents, which will have to leave blue mana open in case the evil flash hulk player (you!) try to combo off.

No turn 3 win? OK, NO PROBLEMO

  • On late-game turn we will take advantage of the supperior quality of cards that the 5c of Kenrith, the Returned King provides and our high density of interaction cards. Also we will outdraw our opponents due blue's Kenrith hability + Mystic Remora/Sylvan Library; we also can get nasty with one of the biggest creatures the cEDH format have (our commander is a 5/5 that can buff otther creatures or even itself and give them trample, win life, etc.)

5c Flash Hulk

  1. Cast Flash pitching Protean Hulk.
  2. Put onto the battlefield Vigean Graftmage (2cmc) + Torch Courier (1cmc) + Incubation Druid (2cmc), add +1 to the druid and give him haste = Infinite mana at instant speed.
  3. Draw out your opponents with Kenrith, the Returned King.

Important considerations:

  • If you have Kenrith, the Returned King onto the Battlefield, this Flash Hulk line WINS THE GAME AT INSTANT SPEED, which means you can Flash Hulk in an opponent's turn or in response of a counter battle between other players. Sweet.
  • If you dont have Kenrith, the Returned King in the battlefielf, just Flash hulk for infinite mana, cast your commander, activate him and win. Also sweet :P
  • If you have Kenrith, the Returned King onto the battlefield and 1R mana, you dont need Torch Courier for giving haste, remember that when using Tainted Pact as you can exile it to keep searching for combo pieces.

Going Manual for Infinite Mana

Vigean Graftmage goes infinite with either Incubation Druid or Bloom Tender, just cast them in the right secuence to abuse the abilities of Kenrith, the Returned King depending on the mana colour you generate: with infinite green and 1R you can do infinite big creatures, give them trample and haste and kill the table, Gain infinite life or draw out your opponents.

Consultation Combo

(Laboratory Maniac + Tainted Pact/ Demonic Consultation is a free win under most forms of stax, and in my experience, the way more cEDH games are won since the ban of Paradox Engine.

Important considerations:

You can change the CONSULTATION package for the BOMBERMAN packcage using Auriok Salvagers + Lion's Eye Diamond to create infinite mana of any colour to use Kenrith, the Returned King and kill the table. However I do not recommend this since consultation is a better option under more forms of stax.

Notable exclusions

  • Hermit Druid: To be honest, vs experienced players, this card will only grant you early looses. Your opponents will mulligan for interaction (as anyone should against Flash) and wait until you throw all your library to the graveyard to counter your Dread Return. Go cry elsewhere.

  • Survival of the Fittest: A very useful card in other Flash Hulk decks because it allows you to throw your 7cmc Angel of Glory's Rise to the graveyard. However, we don't have this problem since our CMC is much lower and we don't use graveyard to combo off.

  • Finale of Devastation: An OK tutor and a wincon once we have infinite mana. However, with infinite mana we have A KING.

  • Grand Abolisher: Useful creature, but we have plenty of ways to protect our combo AND we can win at the opponent's turns, where this card has no effect. On my experience is better to have interaction.

  • Enlightened Tutor: To search what?

  • Quicken: This card allows other Flash Hulk decks to win at instant speed, otherwise is useless. We really don't need this.

Notable inclusions

  • Vexing Shusher: The value that this little goblin grants is insane in a highly interactive metagame. Protect your combos, protect your general, protect your consultation, PROTECT EVERYTHING!!!

  • Sensei's Divining Top: Rarely seen in Flash Hulks decks, useful by itself but here is a wincon with the full consultation package this deck runs.

  • Dockside Extortionist: in cEDH, best ritual ever, exceptionally useful in a 5c deck.
