First off, I have no specifics, as you have given no game plan you wish to achieve. HOWEVER, I have some basic suggestions:

1. Come up with something specific that you want to do, like play big (or little!) stuff fast, or keep your opponents out of the game, or even just overwhelm them with a combination of both.

2. Whittle the number of cards, both overall, and individual, to 60. This will improve stability and reliability. Try to find your most powerful cards that fit your game plan, and put in playsets (4 of each) to the deck.

3. PLAYTEST! Before you go out and spend your cash, make sure this deck does EXACTLY what you want, consistently and quickly.

4. Enjoy your deck. Building your own deck is the most fun you can have.

If you have questions about specifics, don't be afraid to ask anyone, here, or at your game shop.

The Crow of Dark Tidings can go as you have no cards in that deck that benefit from either Delirium. You have only one means of Waste mana production, so n there is no need for Drownyard Temple or Kozilek's Shrieker. Same applies to Foreboding Ruins and Choked Estuary. Without any other means of getting energy counters, having Aether Poisoner in the deck wouldn't be necessary. I see some synergy with Vampire Noble, Indulgent Aristocrat and Carrier Thrall. You could sacrifice the Carrier Thralls to pump Vampire Noble from the ability of Indulgent Aristocrat. Equip two of the Vampire Nobles with Haunted Cloak, and it can be quite lethal to the unsuspecting. If you want to that route, you may want to acquire Gifted Aetherborn, which has deathtouch, lifelink, and would benefit from the pump from Indulgent Aristocrat. This also opens up your deck to keep your zombie producer's like Shamble Back and your creature recursion spells like Resourceful Return. You can trim the number of Swamp to 24.

Also, unless you are going to use Universal Solvent to sacrifice from Defiant Salvager you can cut those as well, and the Ironclad Revolutionary. Foundry Hornet and Fourth Bridge Prowler only trigger once, so the can be cut as well. Toss Creeping Dread as it is too conditional to be really effective. Farbog Revenant, Fen Hauler, Prizefighter Construct, and Ghoulcaller's Accomplice can all go. This cuts the deck to 70 cards, so I will amend my statement about the swamps and you can cut those to 23 swamps.

Cheers thanks guys. This deck is my current mono black standard deck. My game plan is to hit hard and fast and whittle opponents down and or take out any low level creatures as they appear to avoid a build up of opponents cards and +1/+1 counters. The universal solvent I put in to remove any high level creatures or planes walkers. I'll look at the other cards and try out your suggestions. Much appreciated. I've playtested this deck last few days against quite a decent ajani/nissa deck. I've won about 35/40% of games. If I can get a roll on and especially if I get a decent mana run and a nightmare.

I've edited the deck, pretty much as suggested. Though I've kept the choked estuary because I like that foil I've taken out the two renegade maps too. Possibly to add two of the gifted aetherborn. Or even four of them as I'm looking at a four pack in Ebay. Thanks for the great advice. I've done a few test draws and it looks like it will play really fast. Exactly how I wanted it to. I need to play test it against my sons green/white deck now.

Thank you for the great advice man. I've edited my deck pretty heavily, I was nervous taking out some cards I thought were good ones to have in but it now plays so fast and much much better. Thank you. My gameplay is to hit hard and fast at the start of a game to stop my opponent getting a large battlefield of creatures and then to build my vampires and lifelink til I can get my nightmares out once my mana is up to at least +9/+9. Thanks man. Much appreciated

I'm going to proceed on the assumption that you want to keep the price of the deck down, as there are some cards that would work really well for mono-black Vampires but are also quite expensive (namely Metallic Mimic, Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, and Drana, Liberator of Malakir). It also looks like you're going more the route of sacrificing creatures rather than discard/Madness, so I'll make suggestions to that effect as well.

Cut:

Nightmare: This is honestly just a bad card. It's even worse when you're trying to be aggressive since the game will ideally be mostly over by the time you could cast 6-drops. Yes, a 6/6 flyer for 6 sounds nice, but most of the time it's just going to be stuck in your hand and when you finally do get to cast one, it's just going to eat a kill spell. It also restricts your ability to play special lands.

Vampire Noble: There are better 3-drops.

Resourceful Return: This kind of card always looks inviting but this isn't the right deck for it. You don't have enough artifacts to reliably draw a card off it, so it's generally going to be better to replace it with a card that actually does something.

Call the Bloodline: I really like this card, but it doesn't do enough for you in this deck.

Haunted Cloak: Quite slow. You're better off just waiting through summoning sickness rather than taking a turn off to cast a Cloak.

1x Stromkirk Mentor: This is an ok card for your deck, but you don't want it gumming up your hand early. Dropping to three copies is best.

3x Swamp: If you can keep your curve low enough, 22 total lands should do the trick. 23 is a bit much for aggro. Note that I'm cutting three Swamps because I'm adding two special lands back in (see below).

Suggestions_:

That's 24 cards in total. Here are a few cards you should consider to replace the cards above.

2x Yahenni, Undying Partisan: This card can be really brutal if it has sacrifice fodder. Just the 2x, though, since it's Legendary.

2x Voldaren Pariah  Flip: Another amazing sacrifice outlet. Be careful about flipping it when playing against decks with a lot of removal, though; if they have enough mana open to kill this thing after you've activated its ability, you'll still have to sacrifice your guys but they won't have to sac theirs. I'm only including 2 copies so you don't draw it until later in the game.

3x Weaponcraft Enthusiast: Three bodies for one card, this is the kind of sacrifice fodder your deck really needs to shine.

3x Asylum Visitor: A very aggressive card that can even draw you cards sometimes. You can ignore the Madness, as it's still a good card on its own.

4x Grasp of Darkness: You really need removal and this is some of the best removal in the format.

4x Dead Weight: More removal for small creatures. Fatal Push would be better, but Dead Weight is substantially cheaper.

2x Murder: For when you really need something dead and neither Grasp of Darkness nor Dead Weight can cut it.

2x Macabre Waltz: Here's a recursion spell that suits your deck. You'll probably end up drawing more lands than you need at some point, so you can just hold onto a Swamp and discard that after drawing two creatures from your graveyard. You may even be able to discard an Asylum Visitor from time to time. Just 2x of these, though, since you don't want to draw it until later in the game when your graveyard is well-stocked and you're running out of action in hand.

2x Blighted Fen: Even more removal, though this time it gets around Hexproof and Indestructible (since sacrificing an Indestructible creature still causes it to die). More importantly, though, this is a way to mitigate flooding out. Aggro decks need something to do with their mana when they draw nothing but lands, and this is a decent option.

That should get you back to 60 cards without breaking the bank. If you're willing to spend a bit of money, I'd start by replacing two more Swamps with 2x Westvale Abbey  Flip. You won't always be able to flip it, but it can just what you need to turn a struggling game against bigger creatures around. At the very least, it will force your opponent to respect your flip potential as you near 5 creatures.

Good luck, and happy blood-sucking!

Yeesh, I always forget how expensive Grasp of Darkness has gotten. If you don't want to shell out $7.50 for the playset, you could go up to 4x Murders and add 2x Essence Extraction to cover the gap. Grasp would be better, but the Murders and Essence Extractions can do an ok job of filling the gap.

Great cards though most are not standard and I want to keep this a standard deck for now. My nightmares have bee. Great as game finishers so far. If I have seven manna and a cloak already down I can play a nightmare equip and swing with it then it stays untapped to defend.

Sorry was looking in the wrong places. I'll check themOut. Cheers man. I do want to keep my manna cost down but the recurse two drop looks very interesting. I might take out the bloodline for that and two other cards. Maybe the haunted cloaks

April 3, 2017 11:08 a.m.

i know this has already been mentioned before, but if you can swing it, you should really consider adding (AT LEAST) the following cards:

2x Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet
3x Drana, Liberator of Malakir
2x Yahenni, Undying Partisan
3x Asylum Visitor
4x Grasp of Darkness
3x Transgress the Mind

though i like Voldaren Pariah  Flip for flavor, i'm not really convinced that it's worth it. she's a 3/3 for that requires sacrificing THREE creatures to do anything even halfway decent...maybe you can squeeze her in as a one-of? as an alternative win-con? iunno

in terms of which cards to remove, i would prob do:

-4x Nightmare
-4x Vampire Noble
-2x Stromkirk Mentor
-4x Resourceful Return
-4x Carrier Thrall

Nightmare isn't synergistic enough for including ANY really, let alone x4; Vampire Noble = just plain awful; Stromkirk Mentor is OKAY, but Kalitas is MUCH better; Resourceful Return is meh, especially with only 2x artifacts in the entire deck;

& maybe the hardest cut overall, Carrier Thrall--i understand the synergy with Indulgent Aristocrat, i do, but your curve is wayyyyyyyyy maxed on in the 2-drop, so you really need to cut something clogging up that spot. for creatures to sacrifice in-game, you'd still have:

4x Vampire Noble
2x Stromkirk Mentor (who have already served at least half of its purpose w/ the ETB trigger)
3x Asylum Visitor (if necessary)

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$i know my suggestions might break the bank a bit, but Amonkhet coming out soon, prices on a lot of cards are dropping pretty significantly. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet & Drana, Liberator of Malakir are still pretty expensive (around $50 for all five), BUT yahenni is only 1$, visitor is only $.60, & grasp/transgress fluctuate between $1 to $2.

SORRY FOR THE NOVEL / HOPE THIS HELPS !!

No longer standard legal, the cards you have to switch out are Carrier Thrall and Ob Nixilis Reignited. I recommend maybe 3 Alms of the Vein to replace them, good burn spell that has madness.

@NinjaMonkeey:

No, those cards are both still Standard-legal until the fall, when Ixalan releases on Sept 29.

With all the sacrifice synergies, I feel like Squee, The Immortal needs to be somewhere in the 75...

I love this list. I have a similar list that splashes white. After playtesting this list I think you could do with one less Oracle and one more land. I would also do some trashmasters as they help overpower selesnya and other small creatures.

I am very tempted to add a couple of Squee to the sideboard. Just waiting to see what matches I would be bringing Squee in for

Hey there !

Experimental Frenzy is a game winning card ( especially with Runaway Steam-Kin ), I think 4 copies is nice. Treasure Map  Flip is a cool thing to have with Frenzy but not a budget card. Frenzy is really bad with Risk Factor tho. If you want to keep Risk Factor, The Flame of Keld could be something you would play ! ( in the mainboard ) Wizard's Lightning is also a really powerfull option to play, even with only 8 wizards in the deck.

Good luck !

Hey ! I've been playing mono-red for some month now and here are my thoughs :

  1. Deck is looking nice right now, if you want to go at an fnm and get some wins, this deck can do it. Casually, it seems pretty strong tho.
  2. I like Frenzy in the mainboard more than Risk Factor because it can solo win / steal game one. Thrashing Brontodon , Mortify , Vivien Reid etc are all a pretty hard counter play but Frenzy is still worth it. Game two you switch it out for Risk Factor while your opponent get some enchantment removal into it's mainboard. I played many games against esper control/jund midrange but not that many against sultai and I think it is the best solution I found.
  3. I splitted my drop 3 as 2 Chainyboi and 2 Legion Warboss ( the remaining copies of them are in sideboard ). The Warboss did so much work against any kind of control/late ( dimir, esper ) deck that doesn't instantly remove him while Chainyboi is "just" a 3/3. Not switching to 4 Warboss because Chainyboi is still dumb strong against mono white and any creature deck ( and it proc spectacle as etb ).
  4. I removed Runaway Steam-Kin from the deck. It is way too greedy and not that strong in the end. It is strong, but a turn two 1/1 that will prolly die before your next turn ( Cast Down , Moment of Craving , everything ) is meh.
  5. I don't know about Fanatical Firebrand . I find it really weak but the deck needs some turn 1. I removed it from mine but I can't say it's 100% the right thing.

I hope it will help you and if you have anything to say about this, I will be glad to discuss ! Enjoy mono red !
