This is an overall list of Tiny Leaders' tiny leaders, mostly because I couldn't find an up-to-date version anywhere else on the site. It currently includes 580 more-or-less legal commanders and 27 backgrounds for some of them.

POSSIBLY... SOME RULES ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • At its core Tiny Leaders uses the Elder Dragon Highlander/Commander rules.

  • Each deck is led by a legendary creature or planeswalker (who card says can be your leader, or not maybe....) or two legendary creatures, or a legendary creature with a legendary background, or well--I'm sure you get the idea by now--designated as its commander.

  • This was originally envisioned as a 2-player format, but that's like only eating the bread part of your sandwich or playing Commander with only two players (i.e. not as fun as playing with three, four, of five players), so for our purposes the default format is multiplayer free-for-all AKA the 'Fun Option'.

  • “Commander” isn’t characteristic of a card, it’s an attribute. Your commander is still your commander even if it’s a copy of another card, and a card copying your commander doesn’t copy being your commander. Your commander also determines which cards can be played in the deck.

  • Tiny Leaders uses the concept of color identity. In short, a card’s color identity is the color of each mana symbol on that card, any color granted by an ability on that card, and any color indicators on the card. This is aside from reminder text (i.e. a card with the extort mechanic often notes that the ability costs in its reminder text, but doesn't use that text to determine its color identity). A Tiny Leaders commander or partner pairing, or commander and background pairing can have up to three total colors in their color identity and thus the deck's color identity.

  • Each deck must have exactly 50 cards including its commander(s), so mill actually has a chance in the format.

  • Each card must have a mana value of three or less. Within their mana cost, cards count 'X' as zero for this purpose. Split cards are legal only if both halves’ combined converted mana cost is three or less. For purposes of their mana value double-sided modular cards that flip over treat each side as a separate card and both sides must have mana values of three or less to be legal playable so Jorn, God of Winter   is okay, but Valki, God of Lies   not so much.

  • Other than basic lands, each card in a Tiny Leaders deck must have a different English name (i.e. it is a singleton format).

  • A card can be included in a Tiny Leaders deck only if every color in its color identity is also found in the commander’s color identity.

  • A card with a basic land type can be included in a Tiny Leaders deck only if every color of mana it can produce is also found in the commander’s color identity.

  • Each player may also have a sideboard with no more than 10 cards. The singleton rule applies to both the main deck and the sideboard. Personally I think sideboards kinda suck. It's like you're aren't confident in you deck's life choices.

  • The starting life total is 25, so attacking actually makes sense in the format.

  • There is no commander damage rule.

  • Each player draws a hand of eight minus the number of cards in their command zone (usually one).

A Banned List

^ These legends are banned for being sneaky more-than-three-color commanders.

A Sorta Banned List These cards are banned from being your commander for--um... reasons.

I Wish They'd Banned List I sorta wish someone would ban these cards--and do you know what--some people have (see rules links below). Check with your local meta to see what's legal and what's not, and what you are actually playing is what other folks are playing and not (Gods forbid!) Oathbreaker or Brawl. ;)

Other Tiny Leaders Rules: Original and Reborn

The Un-Banned list ;) Listed below and in the Maybe section of the list above are some additional Tiny Leaders you could play were you to develop and build a time travel machine and fly back to the heady days of December 2017! when these cards were legal in Commander (the rules set that Tiny Leaders is built upon).

Some weird card organizational stuff to note:

Undoubtedly, with so many new legends coming to us in the March of the Machine with color mana-activated abilities with different colors than their mana costs this trend will increase. I might attempt to keep up but until someone implements a "color identity" organizing option on the site, folks will just have to keep their eyes open.
