and yea Phyrexian Obliterator is like the best card ever. Sheoldred's my favorite card of all time so I think that Obliterator's flavor text makes it that much more awesome.

Theres a couple nasty control decks at my LGS, I thought they were going to beat me when I first played against them, but then they lost lol.

is Desecration Demon that good in modern? i feel as though you would be better off swapping them for Geralf's Messenger .
November 18, 2013 10:18 p.m.
Desecration demon is a flyer and acts as removal from time to time as well, where as messenger enters tapped, only pings, and is easily burned off. I considered the messenger a while back, but decided he was not good enough.

I would consider replacing Vampire Nighthawk with Fulminator Mage s. So much better in the modern meta.

Good deck, definitely need to invest in some of the higher cost cards like Thoughtseize
November 29, 2013 10:11 a.m.
thanks DurzoBlint13. When I started making this deck, thoughtseize was at 65$, then they reprinted it and I got all my copies for way cheaper. they couldnt have picked a more perfect time to reprint thoughtseize, at least for me. If your looking to pick up thoughtseizes, now would be a good time, except for when they rotate out, which wont be for a LONG time. Theyre still expensive but theyre a lot cheaper than they were.

Looks great. How is geths verdict working for you ? I've been playing with the idea of sideboard, but it looks good enough to me to have it mainboard for most match ups
November 29, 2013 10:18 a.m.
I have had great experience with verdict. It came down to either Geth's Verdict or Smallpox , and I decided smallpox could potentially hurt me from time to time, where as I can use verdict at any time and not worry about it damaging me. Like you wouldnt want to cast smallpox T2, but a geths verdict T2 is fine.

APPLE01DOJ says... #11
Actually, Smallpox shines brightest when you cast it T2.
Your opponents just fetched a tomb to play DRS, then u hit them with nothing more than 2 swamps on your board, take out their tomb and DRS, they have an empty battlefield, down to 16 life, the discard is already draining resources when they need it most. Let's not forget that both Deathrite Shaman and Overgrown Tomb are in the grave (and most likely a fetch too), all prime targets for Surgical Extraction .
It's deff personal preference and Smallpox does have the potential to get in the way but it also allows your deck to take a different plan of attack if need be.
I noticed Scavenging Ooze on your SB. I've been trying to fit ScOoze into my build for quite a while. It's just too good, and benefits from the supporting spells in a deck like this nicely. Have u SB'd it in much yet? What do u take out for it?
November 29, 2013 11:31 a.m.
I havent run into many other rock decks in my travels. Scooze is in my SB in case I run into goyfs, or any deck that uses its graveyard more Im already prepared to handle. I just put it in the SB a week or so ago, so ive only had to MB scooze a few times. What I take out depends on the matchup, but usually Ill end up dropping a surgical extraction, a desecration demon, and an obliterator.

ScOoze is pretty sick in almost any match. It builds naturally the same way goyf does.
May I suggest Sword of Fire and Ice for your Phyrexian Obliterator considering that if he sticks, he almost always gets through, you'll deff reap the benefits of the sword. Not to mention the pump on Obliterator is out of line.
If you eventually decide u liek ScOoze enough to MB then Sword of Body and Mind could be better. Feeds DRS/ScOoze + token gen, to protect Lilly or whatever.
November 29, 2013 1:49 p.m.
Sword isnt a bad Idea, but im on a budget right now so I cant pick up a copy.

I dont know if you have considered one or two Extirpate in addition to Surgical Extraction, just to see the exile factor that much sooner.
December 19, 2013 9:48 a.m.
I had 2 extirpate in SB for a while but I never found a time where they were really necessary to MB. Surgical extraction can be done turn one after a thoughtseize so i ultimately decided that it was better. I liked the split second ability, but in all my games I've played with this deck, Ive had someone counter surgical extraction once. I think if the opponent has played at least one game against this deck, theyre probably saving they're counterspells for bigger threats than extraction.

Plus I need to leave something in the yard for DrS to eat.

Yeah Surgical Extraction definitely the best choice, can even do it turn 1 with Thoughtseize . I had a similar thing going with the deck I'm working on also came to the same conclusion about Extirpate , just cant help but thinking it could be useful with Surgical Extraction too.

Good deal on the mages. I liek the changes. I've been sideboarding both IoK (modern) and Duress lately because 4 Thoughtseize hasn't been enough.
Are u excited for Waste Not? The card could be sick in your build, especially with your added discard. I've been play testing it as a proxy lately and the card is beyond nuts with Lilly on the board, even better when stacked. +1 becomes "All players discard a card, U draw 2 cards". The mana ramp could be a free Geth's Verdict each round. and free 2/2's never hurt either.

I know u prefer Desecration Demon but I think ur deck would do better if u ran Abyssal Persecutor . Think about it. Trample & Flying which is what u want when it hits the board, to do damage, not be tapped at the opponents whim so their bigger guy can get thru for free. Alternately, I would consider replacing Desecration Demon with Oona's Prowler or Vault Skirge . I think Vampire Nighthawk MB would also be a better replacement for Desecration Demon .
If u can possibly find room, Sword of Fire and Ice will make Phyrexian Obliterator deal 9 damage and will give u a draw, which u may also consider atleast sideboarding 1x Phyrexian Arena . Sword of War and Peace will give protection from Path to Exile and Lightning Bolt .
Good luck at GPs and GPTs!
January 13, 2014 12:33 a.m.
I will do some play testing with abyssal persecutor, trample is nice to have. I think I will keep a few swords in the SB as well, but currently the only sword i own is light and shadow, and damnations are going to be my next expense, but eventually I will pick up a copy for fire and ice. Oona's prowler is sweet, vault skirge does not really fit the theme of the deck though.
I want to thank you though for your feedback, APPLE01DOJ you have been most helpful through out this decks construction. You seem to know what your doing when it comes to black decks.
January 14, 2014 9:51 p.m.
Waste Not does seem to be significantly stronger than forerunners like Megrim and Liliana's Caress , which I ended up pulling out of my own discard deck (Put Those Cards Down. Might actually be worth considering for a dedicated discard deck.
I agree with APPLE01DOJ about Abyssal Persecutor . Normally I would like Desecration Demon better, but you have enough ways to off the Persecutor between Geth's Verdict , Liliana of the Veil , and Maelstrom Pulse . That will have you tearing through token and weenie decks that could give Desecration Demon trouble.
Great deck though, looks very strong. The only other thing I wonder about is having all 4 Vampire Nighthawk . Are all those really necessary here? Good luck with this!
