With The Puzzle Box its effect actually triggers after each player draws. In a way it's an even stronger soft lock. Both me an my opponent would only be able to play cards at Instant speed during the draw step, before we lose the card to the box. This is why I'm running a bunch of cards that reduce the opponent's board state at instant speed. It is also why I'm running a few Flash creatures, so I can get them in after the lock. In addition to that, it's also why I was considering running Teferi and Vial. I'll need to find room for them though.

I originally had 4 Archivists in the deck before I added the Puzzle Boxes. Reduced the amount because 8 cards that did essentially the same thing seemed like a bit much. Already planning on adding another one if I find it's too inconsistent though.

Lingering Souls is great, but I don't think I'd run it for the sole reason that it's Sorcery Speed. As for adding Black at all to the deck, I don't really think it's worth it since deck space is already limited.

Grand Abolisher makes instants that kill your creatures useless

Really nice deck. +1. Any game play updates?

While Grand Abolisher is a great card, my opponent is only going to be casting cards on their turn (after the lock) anyway, so it won't be of much help after that. Prior to the lock it would definitely be helpful, but I think relying on counterspells would be better suited for the deck.

As for updates on how the deck plays matchups, I don't have any yet. I plan on proxying it out and testing it in real life soon though. (I generally theorycraft with my decks, so I don't actually own the deck yet)

Kira, Great Glass-Spinner may be better than Drogskol Captain . It protects all your dudes, and itself. Granted you loose a buff, but the effect is worth it, IMO.

This is a really neat idea man!

Hmm that's not a bad idea, especially since she protects herself. Definitely adding her to the Maybeboard. Pretty happy I pulled her at a MM draft now too, I've been wanting to use her in something.

Thanks a ton for the suggestion and +1 too dude.

No problem man! Glad I could help.

Excellent deck man!

Are the tec edges that good? What if they were Mutavault instead? The pump from the captains seem they would be (almost) as good as collonades and a lot cheaper to activate.

I love the idea of this deck. +1 from me! I would though recommend Kataki, War's Wage for the sideboard though. It'll decimate affinity decks. How well does your deck fare against affinity? They tend to throw down all their stuff turn one so I didn't know if hat beat your lockdown time or not. If it does, Hurkyl's Recall would help a bit as well.

@bankrupt_on_selling the tectonic edges aren't really core to the deck, but I feel like they could be helpful. They mostly have uses against manlands which could potentially be difficult to get rid of after a lockdown and would keep the board state in my favor. I also imagine it would be good against Tron as well as midrange decks that revolve on non-basics (my deck caps out on 4 mana to play everything, so I can use up a land if it means I can stop my opponent from dropping a fatty that's hard to deal with on turn 5 or so).

@LtMiller117 I've stated before that when I make most of my decks they're really just theory crafting. I know a good amount of deck types in Modern, but I've never actually really played against any winning decks, only really having experience at the kitchen table level of play. It doesn't help too much that my local store primarily plays Standard. When I get the chance I plan on proxy-ing out the deck ad actually testing it against the big winners. My general goals with a deck aren't necessarily to be able to beat all the top decks out there, but to actually have a decent chance and maybe win a few games in a tournament with an original idea.

As for your suggestions they seem pretty good. I'm more keen on the second one though. I'll definitely consider both of them if I find Affinity to be a problem.

I really like this deck, but is it possible to make a budget version of this? For example, add in "Everybody Draws" instants? Or maybe Dakra Mystic, on their turn? Lore Broker could be done so that they just discard, Runed Servitor could be nice in there. These are all for the Budget version, of course.

Lore Broker is pretty cool because it essentially is instant speed discard in the deck, which I was actually JUST looking into. There's a pretty good chance I'll fit it in somewhere. I'm considering adding Waste Not to the deck since getting a bunch of triggers from an Archivist seems insane, and adding other discard support will make it even better. Other things you can put in include stuff like Funeral Charm, Piracy Charm, and Esper Charm. Dark Deal could also be a pretty decent addition, it has synergy with Waste Not and becomes a 3 mana mirrored One with Nothing with a Spirit on the field. It also lets you dig for combo pieces.

Budget seems very possible with this deck since the essential cards (Spirit, Archivist, and Puzzle Box) aren't very expensive.

I plan on changing this deck up a bit to add in the discard support. You can do really anything you want with the deck so long as the core cards stay in. I don't think anything other than a control shell will work though, so the Remands will probably have to stay in.

Oh also the Paths, those are completely necessary.

Dakra Mystic works very well with Spirit of the Labyrinth. I'd say it provides more control and will lend to more favorable results than Lore Broker. Comes out a turn earlier, which eases up your turn 2 choices quite a bit as well. Having a more consistent turn 1 will help you run a bit smoother.

The thing is Draka Mystic doesn't manipulate your opponent's hand. It is better card advantage, but it doesn't actually lock your opponent like Lore Broker

Dakra Mystic on their upkeep acts as a nice form of top control, as well as smoothing out your draws

Like I said, it's really good card advantage and syngizes well, but it doesn't cobtribute to the focus of the deck.

It's a mana sink and only truly gets good with a Spirit on the field. I'd much rather have a Lore Broker to control my opponent to the point where they can't do anything.
