If Consuming Aberration is your ultimate goal, shouldn't you have all 4 in the deck?

Only have 2 of it at the moment but I see what you mean

Also, you might want to consider a couple other options if you want to continue to mill. One would be Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker . It is a little pricey, but if you land a hit you are milling for four lands and still dealing some damage. Breaking would be another option for a cheap big drop in cards, especially if they have a 60 card deck. You might also want to consider more Nightveil Specter .

I'm actually a fan of Mirko and he was a staple in my mill deck for quite a while. It's goes with one of the reasons why I don't have more than 2 aberrations. I like to avoid 5-drops in favor of stalling cards. Breaking isn't bad I like Tome Scour more. The take I was going with was having 2 conditions. Mill them with ashiok and Mind Grind taking creatures as I go (liliana's emblem makes the MInd grinds really goofy), or get the aberration out and aqueous form him so he gets straight trough for a massive chunk. Thanks for your input though.

with the Returned Phalanx and Murmuring Phantasm maybe you could put some Doorkeeper in?

Alx funny you mention that I used to have a defender based mill focusing on the use of Doorkeeper . I may slide him back in here my problem is what to take out at the moment. A really early version of the deck (before I even thought of putting decks on here) involved doorkeepers, the Murmuring Phantasm , Returned Phalanx and also some Guardians of Meletis . I think Doorkeeper is such a goofy card.

This seems like a confused deck. You have a lot of 1x which will lead to inconsistent plays. Try to focus on a few win cons and get rid of the cards that don't specifically help you with that win condition.

DimirQueen thanks for the input. I see what you mean by the 1 ofs, for the most part it's more of a I only had 1 for the deck or they acted as a board wipe, Cyclonic Rift is one and hythonia getting monstrous is the other. I'd rather play 2 demons than the specter.

How about adding two Rogue's Passage instead of Aqueous Form ?

I've thought about that actually but I'm not huge on the 4 i have to pay every time. Something I've noticed does work that I didn't expect was putting Aqueous Form on a Returned Phalanx and then tapping the 2 for it to attack for an unblockable 3 and I scy 1. thanks for the input. I'll probably think about it some more just because it is a land as well and that always helps.

Seems like your deck is confused. What exactly are you trying to do here?

October 22, 2013 11:55 a.m.

dan8080 says... #12

DimirQueen, The main idea is to hold off until either a Desecration Demon or a Consuming Aberration come out milling them as I go. Liliana helps farm lands and can be used as elimination as needed. The kill spells do their job.

Omenspeaker helps set up for some turns along with being a blocker, the whip and incursion are my sort of fail safes for gaining life to hang in there. Also helps bring back something like a specter or demon for a turn.

The mill component is meant to be a compliment and/or a plan B if the cards jut aren't coming.

Hope that answers. If it didn't I'll try and find a new way to explain.

If you want to hold off those pesky creatures, run more kill spells. Get rid of those defenders like Returned Phalanx and substitute them for cards like Syncopate or Dispel . Trust me on this, you want to focus on your heavy hitters and heavy mill creatures. Also, dont run Read the Bones , use Pilfered Plans . There's no drawback AND you're milling your opponent at the same time.

Hope I helped :D

Takeachansey thanks for the input. I've thought of Pilfered Plans I just like that with bones I can see what I draw before I draw and if the next two cards suck I can chance the 2 after that. I'm a huge fan of the Returned Phalanx ( they give me a back up to hit with if I can't draw much) but ill look into the extra kills. I'm not huge on counters as much because my older decks that used counters ended up being more of a overly conditional thing. Perhaps throw in a 4th Omenspeaker and 2 plans for the returned.

Figured I'd let you know i was playing some friendly games with friends and slipped it Pilfered Plans for my mirko vosks, and my god it was pretty nice having the extra card draw that made my deck fly faster, so thanks Takeachansey for the suggestion

If your ultimate goal is the Aberration, run 3. They aren't legendary. Drop Lilliana and run at least 2 Jace, you wouldn't believe how great the card draw is. That's been enough for me; I don't run Pilfered Plans. And the Aberration is going to be a target, especially with Aqueous Form on the field. You don't need it if you have Thassa's unblockable ability. You need counters to keep him safe.

Thanks DimirQueen, i actually plan on getting the third aberration in there it's just finishing the trade with a friend that has one available. As for liliana I feel like she is insanely underrated. She farms lands so there's less in the deck and she also is an additional kill spell and/or buffer for a giant swing.

Jace's card draw is great (used it myself in some games.) but I get unsettled by 5-drops. I'll definitely look into the swap especially since I had a recent idea for a deck that liliana would fit in that would be fun.

Also (sorry for the long post) what would you suggest I take out for the Consuming Aberration ?

5 drops aren't bad if you have enough control, which is what mill decks need to be now that we lost Jace's Phantasm . The best thing I can tell you to do is get rid of all the cards that don't DIRECTLY help your win con. Lilianna doesn't fit, you need 3 Jace's. Don't forget that you can activate Jace's 0 ability (or ultimate), and throw out a second, destroying the first and activate his 0 ability again. That's 20 or 3 cards, and with Mind Grind and Consuming Aberration 's ability, that's a LOT of mill. I just played my deck, Jace Riding a Consuming Aberration last night. It did GREAT against midrange and RDW aggro, even though the midrange ran a ton of fliers and I was running none. Most of the time I milled them out, a few games the Aberration with Rogue's Passage did the killing blow in one hit. I use Rogue's Passage instead of Aqueous Form because opponents tend to forget about it, which makes the Aberration less of a target. I should also say that the RDW deck was a top 4 tournament deck. Still won consistently 2-1. Get rid of the defenders, you don't need him with Omenspeaker in the deck. Honestly I'd get rid of Nightveil Spektor or Desecration Demon and throw in Nighthowler , which makes Omenspeaker more of a threat by bestowing him. You need less creatures, more removal and more creature destruction. 3 Cyclonic Rift , 4 Hero's Downfall , a touch of Doom Blade . Work on getting 4 Temple of Deceit . You won't need Pilfered Plans with 3 Jaces, which is what this deck should be running.

I'd love to have 4 Hero's Downfall s the 2 in now I lucked into pulls during the prerelease and the first pack I got, don't have the money for 2 more now hahahaha. I think I will take out the phalanx's for Syncopate , Essence Scatter or Negate . I'm not too sure about night howler. Good card but I can't quit the demons or the specters. The latter gives me land draws and extra spells. The demon makes a distraction if nothing else (although token decks hurt.)

Also interesting thought on the passage. I always thought it was cool but when Aqueous Form came out I was like I could pay 4 every turn or pay 1 once.

Also I've actually followed the deck you posted for a while. Looks nice.

Are you planning to play this competitively? It's a really solid deck if you aren't making it for the meta. Right now, aggro is big, red and blue devotion is big, and esper is still hanging around. Desecration Demon can't stop Purphoros burn and Fanatic of Mogis burn, neither can Nightveil Spekter. Gruul and RDW aggro can do more than 20 damage turn 3 now. Master of Waves puts out a TON of tokens that really hurts. Midrange mill decks don't do well in the meta right now, which sucks but that's what I've seen. There has to be enough control to stand up against the popular decks. Esper will hurt; the main strategy there will be mirroring their control and milling completely out. You don't want to rely on one Jace to do that. I still don't know my own deck will stand up against G/W aggro, which is becoming one of the best decks in meta right now. Fleecemane Lion is a problem, but he can still be bounced back and he'll lose monstrosity. Same with Stormbreath Dragon , which RDW and Gruul are both using for win cons. I'd invest in Hero's Downfall , Chandra is dangerous, so is Garruk in mono green with hydras. Cyclonic Rift can bounce planeswalkers back, and Hero's Downfall can knock them down. I've been able to counter until Cyclonic Rift can overload, bouncing back a TON of creatures. And I'd think again about Nighthowler , he gets big quick, leaving him out of Mizzium Mortars range, which Nightveil Specter still dies to. Won't lie, the Spekter can definitely be handy in this kind of deck. I've seen it used a lot and work most of the time. I'm just worried about certain "win cons" being burned off before they have a chance to attack, or targeted with Pacify or something along those lines.

Oh trust me I know. This has been my mold at FNM since theros came out. My rakdos aggro got boring hahahaha. Each week I've been updating the results above. Anyway it has mixed results. My main issue I've come across is my mind likes to play the aggro mind set and I keep stupid hands and on the flip side I'll have nice hands to start but I can't pull a land outside my opening hand to save my life. I play with a few people causally that I play at FNM and test this deck as it evolves against there main decks. It actually does well during the practice just I haven't had many games where the deck executed right in tourney play. Also that jace is the only one I have at this time. I may get more through a trade with a friend.

I plan on trying a different place from the usual this weekend because one of the people I typically play is playing black-white which messes with my deck until I sideboard. I'll make sure to update how that works out. I'll definitely put in a couple counters. Thank you for your input.

Oh, right, it's probably going to hurt you to take cards out but since mill is a type of control, you probably need 23 or 24 lands instead of 22.

But yeah, good luck. Let me know how it goes. What kind of black white decks are screwing you up at your local FNM?

Thanks. And one deck used obzedat whip combo with desc demons and blood barons (made my kills really useless.) and then the other was a frustrating one that decided to abuse fabled hero and would play gods willing if I tried to kill it or when he attacked.

No problem! Seriously, anyone who says pilfered plans sucks probably hasn't tried it out yet. It's a really nice Divination with a mill bonus!
