Hey fellow Modern players!
Sharing an interesting homebrew post-Lurrus ban that I've been having a lot of fun with, and success with as well.
A lonnnggg time ago one of my favorite decks was Abzan Rites. I loved the instant/sorcery package containing the infamous black discard spells but also the great disruption that's available in these colors, while also cheating/flickering Siege Rhino on the battlefield for his "lightning helix" ability.
As I was making this deck a 60 card version I was having a hard time fitting everything I wanted inside of it. I definitely wanted the "Pitch for Grief + Ephemerate" turn 1 capability, but I also wanted 4 Endurance's in the 75, as well as 4 Solitude. Essentially, I wanted each pitch Elemental in Abzan colors to be a "4 of".
I also wanted at least 2 Resto Angel's in the MB. The interaction with Siege Rhino + the Elementals is just way too valuable, and a 3 power flyer out of Bolt range doesn't hurt either!
So after much thought and deliberation, IT HIT ME! Lurrus may be banned, but Yorion aint!
So here we have it. A deck that benefits from flickering creatures, as well as a playset of Goyf, some Lingering Souls (Coll-Brut + discarding Souls is still good in Modern, trust me), and a playset of Esper Sentinel for some early card/tax advantage.
I guess I also forgot another key card in this deck....
SEDGEMOOR WITCH
Wanna kick it off the field? Pay 3 Life
Wanna block it? Menace
Wanna try to go wide against me? Every spell I cast creates a 1/1 creature that gives me a life back when it dies
I'm tellin ya, Sedgemoor Witch puts it's hardhat on.
You also might be wondering why I have cards in my sideboard that have Storm. I mean, Weather the Storm see's a little bit of play, and it's great against burn, but why is it great in this deck?
Simply put, again, Sedgemoor Witch. Magecraft is quite the ability. "When you cast or copy a spell"... yes... Cast or COPY.
Maybe Sedgemoor Witch wasn't playable in a Lurrus-dominated format, but in all honesty, what more can you ask for in a mono-colored 3 drop?
I love the curve as well as the utility lands. I feel as though it's a perfect mix, and enough basics to fetch for if I'm in a blood moon match!
Looking for suggestions and constructive criticism as I'm going to be doing more playtesting before I enter some MTGO League, but in all honesty, this deck hasn't lost a series yet.
