Achilles- er, I mean, Haktos Voltron

Commander / EDH Aggro RW (Boros) Voltron

Nitelock75

I saw Haktos the Unscarred in the Theros: Beyond Death spoilers and immediately fell in love with him. He's so weird but at the same time so powerful. It's Boros in EDH, though, so I was kind of worried, but after a few playtests in my fairly skilled playgroup(multiple people have been playing for many years longer than I and like to build mean and complex decks) I think that this is a pretty decent build.

So for Haktos to be a proper Voltron commander, which is just about the only strategy he's good for, you need to pump him. But with the nature of protection, that throws most avenues of pumping out the window. No equipment, no auras, no targeting spells. There are plenty of workarounds to this, however.

First off, the boon of Haktos being Boros is that the only two cards in the game that have the text "Commander creatures you control get..." are red and white. Bastion Protector and Bloodsworn Steward both give commander creatures you control +2/+2 and indestructible and haste respectively. It doesn't target, so it takes effect on Haktos, and it makes him absolutely terrifying as an 8/3.

Other effects that can affect Haktos that I have included are bolster, exalted, and soulbond. All of them give bonuses or abilities through text that does not target. Most of these cards are creatures, although there are a few instants that bolster.

There are more than a few methods of control in this deck. One of them is honestly probably the best card in the whole deck. Sanctum Prelate was made for Haktos. You should be careful though because this does affect whether or not you can cast Embercleave. With Embercleave's special text, you can customize the CMC, which enables you to attach it to Haktos through its target ability, but not if you have Sanctum Prelate on the field. Both cards can definitely be win conditions though.

The others are board wipes like Blasphemous Act, Hour of Devastation, and Mass Calcify, which just simply don't affect Haktos. Single Combat is fantastic for multiplayer, board wiping even indestructible creatures as well as often winning you games, while Relentless Assault and Blinding Flare are great for taking out a single opponent. Other control/removal cards like Abzan Advantage, Intimidation Bolt, and Pyroblast are pretty self-explanatory.

Most of the enchantments are big boys, stuff like True Conviction and Always Watching making Haktos pretty scary.

The ramp is pretty self-explanatory. Your first and foremost goal is getting Haktos on the field and pumped up, preferably with some haste. With the right hand, you can swing for 8 damage on turn two or three, although this will make you public enemy number one, so be careful.

This deck, being Voltron, depends entirely on Haktos being on your battlefield and able to attack, so on the slim chance that Haktos could be affected by any sort of creature control or treason effects, the sideboard contains plenty of cards that remove enchantments and get you your commander back.

And that is that! Please criticize, suggest additions to the deck, and most of all, upvote.
