They do. It’s a great win against Blood Pod.

Would you ever consider Raff Capashen, Ship's Mage as a second copy of Shimmer Myr?

Suasion says... #3

Probably not. The colored mana and 4cmc makes it quite bad, considering our main wincon is still ad naus. Stats in the primer say we have a pretty consistent shimmer win when we do go for it, so I don't think it's worth including outside a budget build, and probably not even then

Fair enough, I honestly didn't know.

All good!

Why not trow in a balliista? I found it really good, especially when aetherflux gets praetor's grasped out of the deck. Could be a meta choice, but it's rarely a dead card.

Nomad95 Counter the Praetor's Grasp, or just Doomsday for the win.

Barbola says... #8

You mean tainted pact/demonic consult, not weak-ass doomsday lol

Nomad95 says... #9

SynergyBuild Well, that's the plan, it's just that I like to have other options.

October 4, 2018 5:44 p.m.

SynergyBuild says... #10

You need 4 options? That seems tough if each deck you play against runs and always find Praetor's Grasp!

As I said, it might be a meta call, but yes in my playgroup deck screwing cards are heavily used. Plus, since stax is not really an issue in my meta, candelabra is not as useful. That being said, yeah, upon further testing I can see that the deck doesn't really need another wincon. But again, meta call.

Hey! I'm running a $1500 budget'ish list of this deck. Notable omissions are Timetwister, Candelabra, Imperial Seal and Dual Lands.

Deck list is here for anyone interested: https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/zur-shiet/

How do you feel about Thought Vessel in the deck? Perhaps just as a budget replacement for some of the very high priced cards? It is probably not worth it in a more tuned and budgetless deck but as a way to not discard too many cards after a big Necropotence/Ad Naus and having a "bad" draw where I'm not able to win on that or the consequent turn?

Hey spasgur!

I think non ramp spell, colorless artifacts aren't really good enough. The cards you're missing don't negatively affect necro lines, since they aren't instant speed anyway. I'd cut some combination of thought vessel, prismatic lens, predict, and probably etherium sculptor for impulse/opt/dark confidant/into the roil.

Lacking card advantage, tutor, and an optimal manabase means you should probably add in more card filter/advantage, that would be my suggestion.

How's the deck been for you?

After playtesting Zur with different builds (refer to my comment from a few months ago), I've found the Tainted Pact / Demonic Consultation version with instant shimmer win to be the most superior version. Tainted pact/Demonic consultation can get us Isochron/Reversal/Reservoir during our necro endstep. I added in more instant speed draw (and recovery), which is really pulling its weight, especially since I've had situations before where I have topdeck tutors and mana at the endstep, but no instant speed card draw. Overall the build I ended up with - http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/tainted-shimmer-storm/

has the lowest CMC of all my decks - 1.69, and makes the endstep necroing much more reliable and almost sure to win. Let me know what you think and why would you consider a High Tide Doomsday build to be superior to Tainted Pact & Demonic Consultation (which you can play during endstep).

I keep this list maintained and play with it occasionally, but my paper shimmer zur is the tainted one: Tainted Shimmer Zur

I think the tainted version works better into most metas, and our lists for that build are mostly the same:

Tainted Shimmer Zur has:

+1 Gemstone Mine Mainboard

+1 Swamp Mainboard

+1 Timetwister Mainboard

+1 Pongify Mainboard

+1 Notion Thief Mainboard

-1 Cavern of Souls Mainboard

-1 Conjurer's Bauble Mainboard

-1 Cremate Mainboard

-1 Snapcaster Mage Mainboard

-1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth Mainboard

I think the DD version works better into very grindy, control heavy metas, and otherwise the tainted version tends to perform better.

TBH the cards you listed as -1 are exactly the cards I added to the Tainted Shimmer build, they work great so far (maybe not Cavern of Souls, but the other 4 are definitely bomb.

Suasion says... #17

-1 doesn't mean it's a bad card, it's the output of tappedout's deck compare feature :D It's the differences between your deck and my deck

That said, I'm still not a fan of cremate or the bauble

Thanks for the reply!

I initially cut Opt for Preordain but I actually want it back for more instant speed draw during end step storms. I have been trying out Etherium Sculptor for storm turns but goldfishing it has produced mixed results. It is due to be cut next time I upgrade the deck.

I just cut Prismatic Lens and Mox Amber for Flusterstorm and Tainted Pact. I think the next addition is gonna be either one or two dual lands or Imperial Seal.

As for playing the deck, I've mostly goldfished the deck here. I have only once tried it out for real as it is only a few weeks ago that I put it together. I'm still fairly new to cedh so jumping into this deck has been a challenge but a fun one! I own a Jhoira cedh deck but wanted to try out a faster build while reusing a lot of the cards I already owned. And I also wanted to give Doomsday a go. So Shimmer Zur seemed to fit those criteria perfectly! I'm excited to gain more experience playing the deck.

Oh and results with the deck. Mixed bag, mostly because of mistakes I made because of inexperience. But I got to resolve a Doomsday to win, and Angel's Grace+Ad Naus to win and a Demonic Consultation+lab man to win. When goldfishing I've become better at getting optimal efficiency from end step storms and resolving doomsday piles without fucking up. Slowly getting to know the deck better and improving my gameplay.

Hey there, I am doing a bit of research on The more competitive decks out there for my Stax deck.

  • So the first question is: what kind of "Stax" or "Hate cards" would shut this deck down or make it impossible for you to win under certain singular or combined Effects?

  • And the second question is about Sanctum Prelate as I am trying to gather as much information about the stopping power of calling specific CMC with this card vs certain strategies, Would you consider CMC , or CMC to be more effective here to disrupt your gameplan?

Hey!

Stax that stop this deck the hardest are the '1 spell a turn' cards such as Rule of Law, Arcane Lab, Eidolon of Rhetoric. Taxing effects like Trinisphere hurt, and so do effects that turn off artifacts like Null Rod, and Stony Silence. You typically want more than 1, and to stop Zur from attacking. Otherwise, Zur fetches Grasp of fate to remove them.

Non artifact stax is best, since Hurkyl's serves the dual purpose of upping storm count, and bouncing a stax player's artifact stax.

Aven mindcensor is good against a lot of decks, as well.

I don't think prelate is a great stax piece, but if you're going to use it, 1 is usually the best number to name. Not just against this deck, but most competitive decks tend to run the most 1 drops. The common removal for prelate other than deluge is also 1cmc.

Thank you Suasion for the In-Depth response! I'll gladly iterate on Prelate whether I rather run something else for it and the majority seems to dislike it so I'm leaning towards a flex slot/cut soon :)!

Hey man! Came accross with your list and noticed I am running a similar one: Lil Control Sisters I was hoping if you could give me any advice into replacing some stuff, and I am having problems with the mana base, thank you!:)

Suasion says... #24

TortillaConfetti It doesn't look like you're building for full competitive, what meta do you play in? It's tough to give suggestions without that context. Manabase wise, I'd just remove checklands and ETB tapped lands, similar to this deck or the tainted version.

Suasion No man, I don't play in an all competitive circle, usually against five color dragons, Athreos apostles, and Child of Alara, the deck is meant to be controllish and to spice up things with the theft on the table haha :)
