None of my friends play Gruul but I've tested this deck several times against a fast Boros deck and tend to go 50/50. I don't mulligan to a Cloudfin Raptor , but I definitely don't keep hands where I can't deal with early attacks (ie: cheap undying creature, bounce, etc).

I haven't done much testing with the Bred for the Hunt yet, but just today I updated my deck with it and might do some testing with friends later. I have a friend that plays a very aggressive wurm token deck, it is surprisingly fast, so I will see how that goes soon.

Bred for the Hunt did very well, especially early game on an evolved Cloudfin Raptor , it really helped refueling my hand.

Trample appears to be an issue, I have been using Young Wolf and other undying as chump blockers, then removing their counters to keep them coming, but doesn't do too well against a bunch of 5/5 trample wurm tokens. My deck did prevail 2/1 though.

I recently started playing an evolve variant of this deck and I love it. Still play testing the bugs out of it, early mana ramp could help slightly I dropped in Arbor Elf in place of Gyre Sage but my deck runs a touch slower because I don't have the undying one drops. I actually just bought the IND undying cards to make the undying variant o this deck. One of the two will be for fnm, I think the undying because it seems a bit faster and by me there are some fast decks in FNM. I can't wait to try this design.

In a more evolve based deck I really like Vorel of the Hull Clade and Master Biomancer but in this deck I feel they slow it down(vorel more then biomancer). I haven't overly play tested it yet but I feel I'd sacrifice at least the vorel's for more of the 1 drops to have better odds of drawing both Cloudfin Raptor and Young Wolf turn 1-2. If biomancer stays in the deck though I also highly recommend playing Crowned Ceratok he is just mean in a deck where everything has +1/+1 counters on it.

I've had great success with Vorel of the Hull Clade , his 3 cost and 2 for his ability is very reasonable considering what it does. In a recent game I turn 5 dropped Vorapede , turn 6 played Increasing Savagery on the Vorapede and used Vorel to double it, making me able to swing with a 15/14 vigilant trample. The following turn I was able to double it again, making it a 25/24 for the win.

Of course he has his uses trust me i understand that. I play him in my evolve deck and I love his ability. Combined with cards like Progenitor Mimic Prime Speaker Zegana and a quick Bioshift his ability gets broken REAL fast, but in THIS deck excluding a combination with Increasing Savagery , Primordial Hydra , or a Rancor on Master Biomancer he would have to activate 2 or 3x(1c->2c, 2c->4c, 4c->8c) to REALLY make a heavy effect. Id rather the extra Cloudfin Raptor and Young Wolf for the turn 2 swing for 3, turn 3 swing for 8. Possibly drop 2x Arbor Elf in the deck means a turn 4 Vorapede . This more speed oriented makes turn 4-10 burning 2 mana too slow for the main objective of the deck IMO.

I can attest for mPalo's idea completely. Vorel of the Hull Clade is too slow for an already low speed High momentum deck. it just doesnt give enough benefit as Master Biomancer does for the same cost. :/

You also might want to look into Hunger of the Howlpack in an undying simic deck 3x +1/+1 counters for 1 is kinda sick

I really think that you should split this deck up. I've been play-testing it quite a bit and it gets caught up in what it's really trying to do. To many things trying to happen at once.

I remember you saying you might split it in to a gyresage/hydra deck (you could even splash in some red for Savageborn Hydra or something) and a undying/zameck guildmage deck. DO IT!

mPalo says... #10

If you were to splash in red I'd suggest playing Fervor the only thing scarier then a hydra is a hydra u don't see coming. But the Hydra is not really a bad card in the undying deck. It's a nice win condition card and you could play it as early as turn three. It's alot of the other evolve that I think bogs down the undying speed and security. I am building a version of this deck with no Master Biomancer no Bioshift , really the only evolve card I'm playing is cloudfin raptor

@ mPalo, I'm curious to see what you come up with! Let me know when you finish.

Has anyone tested Renegade Krasis in this style of a deck? How about Predator Ooze ? I know it doesn't help with evolve but it does make the deck even stronger against creatures and Supreme Verdict. I've been thinking about assembling this kind of deck earlier, and I thought that 1 Increasing Savagery might be enough. I can imagine that I would be casting it on Gyre Sage most of the time as a "free spell" like you suggested. Vorel also seems to work nice with Gyre Sage, essentially refunding the activation cost if Gyre sage has 2 counters. I really would want to play 4 sages here. It seems very important and too strong of a card to only play 2 of.

+1 Loved this deck the description was SO FREAKING HELPFUL in making my own simic deck. Mine is now almost a carbon copy but just wanted to tell you thanks for the great ideas!

I try to keep it clean. Check under the updates they get swept into it.

Anytime MrNathan! It's ridiculous how well the synergy is with all the different cards, which makes it incredibly difficult to add new cards whenever suggestions are made. But I've had great success in adapting to different decks with this build, it is very flexible.

I'm playing with this deck, and the Sinergy is aburd! Congratulations for creating it and thank you for sharing. If I could add my contribuition, I would suggest change Ooze Flux to Miming Slime. It's one less mana and you don't have to sacrifice +1/+1 counters. What do you think? Bye!

June 14, 2013 6:07 p.m.

MrNathan says... #20

@donovahn I think the point of the Ooze Flux is to remove counters on undying creatures, extremely helpful when lots of chump blocks are needed. I have noticed with this deck that sometimes the counters get out of control but i personally took out Ooze Flux because MOST of the time Zameck Guildmage is enough.

On ANOTHER note I have been playing around with adding a 3rd color to this deck doing some experimenting and play testing with White or Black. So far black seems to be better in theory.

Would Doubling Season be a good addition to this deck for Modern play ya think?

Zahny says... #22

@MrNathan The point of this deck is 2 color HOWEVER, I have had success splashing Red for Slumbering Dragon for a counter generator and Domri Rade and Ral Zarek .

I feel like Predator Ooze would be a welcome fit in this deck - triple green may be tough to nail on turn 3 consistently, but he's an even bigger threat if you already have master biomancer/vorel out.

Why take Sundering Growth over Naturalize ?

Sundering Growth has populate you will probably have 1 or 2 frog tokens on the field.
