Clan Defiance costs a red land, but you don't have any Mountain . I think Bow of Nylea and/or Mistcutter Hydra would work better in this deck.

I would suggest Wasteland Viper . It's even better than Sedge Scorpion !!!

chillingtouch, thanks!

wayofwisdom, I don't need a Mountain for Clan Defiance since Sylvan Caryatid and Axebane Guardian can produce mana of any color. With 2 Defiances and 8 of thise defenders, chances are pretty good I can cast the Defiances no problem.

I'm considering putting the Bow of Nylea in for something, but Mistcutter Hydra is basically only good against blue decks. Besides, if anything I need more Defiances like CW suggested.

LordDavop, despite it being one of my favorite Gatecrash cards, Wasteland Viper isn't going in here. Yeah, it has one more toughness and can be used as a combat trick. If I wanted it for the added toughness I would have put in Deadly Recluse instead. As for its Bloodrush, most of my attackers are powerful enough there the ability shouldn't be relevent. Plus the theme of the deck kinda revolves around Sedge Scorpion , just a little. Sedge Scorpion has also made it clear that the Viper is not going in his deck.

Pah! Wasteland Viper was far from better than Sedge Scorpion . What, all it is that it has an extra toughness (useless anyway) AND an ability that doesn't let you defend AND attack? And in exchange they upped it's rarity? WTF were Wizards even trying to accomplish when designing that horrid thing, changing a perfect formula they hadn't even invented yet?

@GoldGhost012 Oh yeah, I forgot that Sedge Scorpion is the best card in the game. Sorry bro.

GoldGhost012 says... #6

Actually, that would be Storm Crow . Sedge Scorpion is just the best on Theros.

Yeah Wasteland Viper is WAY to expensive. Crazy people paying so much for a card they could have in 1/5 booster packs of theros!

Faced Sedge Scorpion today. My deck relies on Slag Fiend s and Salvage Titan s. I almost decided to scoop after the opponent's first turn.

And thus is the ungodly power of Sedge Scorpion brought to light.

So did you have any chance to try this on Standard Tournaments? I'm still in the process of getting a few cards to try it out. Caryatids are too expensive :/

I have not actually touched any Theros cards except the ones from the Duel Deck and a Hundred-Handed One I traded for. So no, but I wish. My playgroup hasn't even drafted it yet, and I'll probably be unable to attend when they eventually do. And apparently my playsets of Sedge Scorpion and Colossus of Akros that I ordered from CoolStuffInc hasn't come in yet. :(

Plus I've never been to any FNM ever, and there's only been one FNM since Theros was released.

You want to take this thing to FNM? Awesome! But yeah, the Carytatids are kind of wierdly expensive. What are they up to now, $7-8?

Good luck, and remember: the power of Sedge Scorpion will be with you. Always.

Well i know i won't win but it will be fun to play and watch the surprised faces of my opponents :P. I'll give it a shot next week

If anyone offers to trade you their Snapcaster Mage s for your Sedge Scorpion s: Don't do it. Snapcaster isn't even Standard anymore because Sedge Scorpion knocked it out, so now it's even more of a rip-off.

There's a reason Sedge Scorpion is the most expensive card in Standard right now- because it's the best card in Theros. When Theros prices begin to drop, Sedge Scorpion's will only rise.

Suck on that, Wasteland Viper .

I just playtested it a few times and noticed that it may take very long until you draw the game-winner colossus or a good creature. Maybe you should add Commune with the Gods . Its great for searching through your deck and can target both creatures and Alpha Authority to hexproof your creature.

October 8, 2013 12:47 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #17

Yeah, I've noticed that too. In fact, that's why the Defend the Hearth s and Fog s are in, to protect me. Still, Commune with the Gods is interesting... What if I removed the Fogs and Hearths for 4x Commune, 3x Bow of Nylea , and 1x Clan Defiance ? Do you guys think that would be a positive change ?

October 8, 2013 1:31 p.m.

Bromjunaar says... #18

Are you consistent enough with your red mana to be able to do another Clan Defiance ? As big as your creatures are too, would some cheap mana dorks such as Elvish Mystic be a good idea?

October 8, 2013 2:39 p.m.

Bromjunaar says... #19

Just saw you had the Mystics in there, my guess then defaults to Voyaging Satyr who is utterly ridiculous with Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx since you can cycle the mana that Nykthos makes back into itself after you untap it to make even more.

October 8, 2013 2:42 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #20

The almighty Sedge Scorpion empowered Sylvan Caryatid and Axebane Guardian with the ability to give any color of mana. Red mana is almost never an issue.

Voyaging Satyr is interesting, but only worth it if he's untapping a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx or a land that can produce multiple colors. Most of the time, he'd just be untapping a Forest, making him a slightly more expensive Elvish Mystic . And for that 2 mana, I'd rather cast a Caryatid.

Diam says... #21

I would be reluctant to remove all 8 damage preventers but the deck would need some actual playtesting to be sure. I'll see if i can gather most of the cards next week and give it a shot.

October 8, 2013 4:52 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #22

My reasoning behind taking away all 8 would be since 4x Commune with the Gods would be mainboarded instead of Defend the Hearth , that would leave me with 4x Fog . That means I probably won't be able to draw them when I need them, and when I don't need them, they'd sit in my hand until they'd be used, if ever. I'd rather replace them with something I can immediately play and would at least somewhat affect the board state and a wincondition.

By the way, how have your playtests been going so far the way it is?

Vastwood Hydra is really nice. With so much ramp it's like, "Yeah kill my Hydra, you will only make my Scorpion that much more deadly!"

October 9, 2013 7:07 p.m.

GoldGhost012 says... #24

Vastwood Hydra is nice, but it's basically vanilla until it dies. If I cast it for 7, it enters as a 5/5. That's it. For the same cost, I can cast Giant Adephage , which is a 7/7 trampler that can make more 7/7 tramplers. If I transfer all the counters onto Sedge Scorpion , I now have a 6/6 deathtoucher. At that point, deathtouch is basically a moot point.

Not dissing on the Hydra, but I don't feel it would be a good fit in here.
