feyn_do_alduin, Reverent Hunter is either going sit wasted in my hand or come out with few counters on him. Reasons? Well, if I have enough mana dorks, a Hunter, and a Giant Adephage or Worldspine Wurm , you can bet I'm casting the Adepahge or Wurm. If I cast him next turn, he's huge, but he's also vanilla unless Nylea, God of the Hunt is on the field, and with that much devotion, she's probably attacking too. Reverent Hunter is also best as a 4-of in a MGD aggro-ish build, with Burning-Tree Emissary s and relatively minor ramp. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Darthen, I don't think that I've ever said that Sedge Scorpion was a better card than Wasteland Viper . If I have, or if it feels like I've ever said it, I'm sorry. But my point is that, in this deck, the only difference between the Scorpion and the Viper is Viper's extra toughness. I'm ignoring the Bloodrush ability because 9.5 times out of 10 Elvish Mystic and Karametra's Acolyte won't attack, so of my 11 potential attackers, only the 4x Sedge Scorpions would get a substantial boost from the extra +1/+2, and that would be the creature Viper would swap for. The rest should be too big and powerful to be dramatically affected by the Bloodrush ability. If I did want the deathtouching 1/2 creature, I'd have to take a long look at whether the 1-drop Wasteland Viper with the not-very-useful Bloodrush ability was better than the 2-drop deathtoucher but with reach Deadly Recluse .

So maybe I am arguing over nothing, but that's just what I think. It's just my personal preference for my personal deck. If someone wants to build this and run the Vipers over the Scorpions, that's their call for their deck. I'm not going to tell them that what they want to run is wrong.

Besides, it'd be kinda weird to have a Sedge Scorpion -themed deck but not run any Scorpions, don't you think? :P

@GoldGhost012 Well said, and I am sorry if I pointed too many fingers. I do realize you have not outright stated that Sedge Scorpion is better than Wasteland Viper , but I felt like you came across that way. Whatever the case may be, I will respect your decisions as a fellow magic player and will not argue the point further.

I might actually try that MGD deck idea for Reverent Hunter , thnx.

I do see your point about Wasteland Viper though. tbh, I'm more than tempted to build this deck as is.

I do however possess a second Garruk, Caller of Beasts , I'm gonna see about trying to fit him in, though, I don't know where I'll put him...

You could probably afford loose a Pit Fight , Nylea, God of the Hunt , or Commune with the Gods .

I personally would add 4x Temple of Abandon for scry. It's relevent also for Pit Fight and Clan Defiance .

GoldGhost012 says... #6

The scry is good, but they come in tapped , and thus is slower than a Forest. My turn 1 Elvish Mystic or Sedge Scorpion wouldn't be able to come out. It just isn't worth in my mind being able to cast Clan Defiance without necessary dorks.

But you don't need to play the scryland on turn 1; if you had a forest, you could play that instead. If your playing big creatures, you don't need to worry so much about getting mana sources out as fast as you can. If your playing large creatures, you are bound to be slower than anyone else you play against. You have defenders and other sources of ramp to protect yourself for that bit of time. Just slow down and accept that you won't be as fast as the other guy. And I would advise against relying upon Sylvan Caryatid and Axebane Guardian for red mana; if they get blown up, then you can't play your own Clan Defiance (although, depending upon how much you play it, it's not a big deal). Having Temple of Abandon is probably all you need for a little assurance.

I hate playing lands that come into played tapped, especially in a format as fast as Standard. Even if Standard is slowing down, I still hate it. It's just the type of person I am. I might run Stomping Ground over them, just for the potential to come into play untapped. Losing the scry, but speed... well, as a varsity cross country runner, speed is important to me. Most of the time, my lands and dorks let me play anytime I need to. And I wouldn't run 4, probably 2 or 3.

Clan Defiance is more of a "Hey, my dorks aren't dead, they have a bothersome creature, and they need to lose life" kind of card. Something to use when I have nothing else to pump mana into. Not if I can summon one of my giants.

Hahaha wow I actually got a kick out of this deck but I still think it's very good! The only thing I would ask though is, with Pit Fight , I thought the deathtouch ability isn't applied, since they're just assigning their power to the other creature's toughness?

January 10, 2014 12:59 a.m.

Bromjunaar says... #13

Deathtouch works for any damage (I think Lifelink does too but don't quote me on it) which is why Polukranos, World Eater and Bow of Nylea or Wasteland Viper is actually a doable combo for a pseudo-easy board wipe.

The Dangerous part of Armed / Dangerous is a nice way to let Sedge Scorpion or his minions deal with the entire force of Sedge Scorpion s enemys at the same time.

GoldGhost012 says... #15

ColdHeartedSith, Axebane Guardian also gives mana of any color. With 8 sources, it's pretty rare that I get color screwed.

RCMetalhead, deathtouch and fight just as Bromjunaar explained it. The one damage from Sedge Scorpion will be enough to kill any non-indestructible or pro-green creature. Same with lifelink.

Jojja, even if I used Dangerous on Sedge Scorpion , Sedge Scorpion would still only deal 1 damage to up to one creature. I understand how good that still can be, having everything block the Scorpion to push through damage, but most of my creatures are defenders or have 1 power, and the powerful ones often just win games regardless of whether or not they're blocked.

January 10, 2014 3:57 p.m.

Bromjunaar says... #16

Actually, Sedge Scorpion would only have one point of damage for all of the creatures blocking him total. Meaning that you would have to find a way to boost his power if there were multiple creatures to block.

GoldGhost012 says... #17

Right, but I was pointing that he only had one point of power to distribute. If I buff him, then he can distribute more.

DEFY ALL ODDS: Win with Clan Defiance for one.

SCORPION PIT: Kill a creature with heroic by using Pit Fight with Sedge Scorpion .

ROBIN HOOD: Use all four modes of Bow of Nylea and win.

THE ARGONATH: Have two non-monstrous Colossus of Akros on the field.

Dritz says... #19

You should replace Sedge Scorpion with Sedge Scorpion . Huge upgrade to be found there. I mean, come on, you go from a lowly 1/1 with deathtouch for 1 to a wildly overpowered 1/1 with deathtouch for 1!

i would make this modern and splash blue for Storm Crow or maybe black for a Reanimate style card to bring back Sedge Scorpion
