The Gitrog Monster is among the most popular Golgari commanders, and it isn't hard to see why. In addition to being a large undercosted body with a potentially relevant keyword, he also excels at accruing advantage over his opponents, simply because he rewards you for doing things a lot of decks already want to be doing.

This build is intended to be on the very high end of casual or the low end of CEDH. While it can and has won at a table with 3 other CEDH decks, it is more intended for a no-holds-barred high power casual game. The lack of blue in the color identity substantially hampers its ability to go toe to toe with Urza or Krark-Ishima, for example. Play at this high level is further complicated by the fact that the deck is laser focused on finding its combo, and lacks a lot of interaction that could stop its opponents from winning on the spot; most of the interaction is focused on preventing my opponents' interaction from messing with my game plan.

Speaking of combos, this deck has only one: the interaction between The Gitrog Monster, Dakmor Salvage, and a way to repeatedly discard cards such as Skirge Familiar. This loop of discarding Salvage and dredging it back to my hand allows me to draw my entire deck, and after my whole deck is in hand, generate infinite mana by looping Lotus Petal with the help of Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. From there, with infinite mana and my entire deck accessible, the win is assured.

How It Works Show

This deck lives and dies by its lands. 5 land opening hands can be keepable. Early game, the plan is to ramp hard to get the frog into play and begin drawing felonious numbers of cards early. Prioritize getting access to your Dakmor Salvage and Noose Constrictor, Oblivion Crown, Skirge Familiar, or Wild Mongrel as early as possible. There are a few non-conditional tutors in the deck, as well as some land specific ones, but your best way to find them will often be drawing a lot of cards. Once the Frog, Salvage, and A Discard Outlet are available, play the discard outlet and begin the loop. Discard Dakmor, and replace the draw with a dredge. Return it to your hand, possibly drawing a card off milling a land, and repeat until the whole deck is in your hand. From there, discard Ulamog, then a land, then Ulamog again. From here, each discard of Dakmor will result in Dredging Ulamog and a land. This means each discard nets you 1 draw and 1 shuffle trigger. Play Lotus Petal, then discard Salvage and dredge it twice, holding priority over the draw triggers. After the second dredge, activate the Petal, then discard and dredge the salvage again. This nets 1 mana of any color and another shuffle and draw trigger. Resolve the Shuffle, then the 3 draws, and discard Ulamog, Land, and then Ulamog again. Repeat until you have enough mana to kill the table with your method of choice. This build chooses to use Exsanguinate or sacrificing a large creature to Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord.

Other possible kill conditions include an infinitely large Torment of Hailfire, or looping ramp spells with Ob Nixilis, the Fallen in play. With infinite colored mana and your deck in your hands, your options aren't particularly limited.

Notable Synergies Show

Basalt Monolith + Mesmeric Orb - Mesmeric orb is a particularly strong card in this deck, although it can take a while to fully resolve its triggers in your upkeep. Basalt Monilith hardly needs introduction, although its use in this deck is not to generate infinite mana. On its own, it is just a mediocre mana rock, but with the Orb in play, it lets me mill myself infinitely, allowing me to almost do the Dakmor/Frog loop all on its own. If I resolve both of these cards, I usually win.

Land based land destruction - At the power level that this deck intends to play at, targeted land destruction is a valid strategy. Bringing targeted land destruction on a land is very beneficial for this deck, particularly because most of the options can hit my own lands. This lets me use an expendable land for mana, and then for a card later in the same turn to get just a bit deeper in my deck. Since destruction lands such as Ghost Quarter and Strip Mine sacrifice themselves, targeting my own lands allows me to draw 2 cards for almost free. Being able to then play these lands again from the graveyard with Crucible of Worlds or similar is a further benefit.
