Mystic Snake -> Semester's End
Mystic Snake was originally meant to be a counter spell that fit the deck's themes of ETBs. However, most of the flicker effects return creatures into play at the end of the turn, not immediately. Which makes Mystic Snake usually just a single counter spell. So until we get more copies of Emiel the Blessed, I will instead be happy with swapping out the counter for another copy of Eerie Interlude
Deceiver Exarch -> Stonehorn Dignitary
I pulled a foil old bordered version of Stonehorn Dignitary and immediately wondered why I wasn't running it in this deck. The answer is that this was originally only printed once in an older coreset long before I started playing so I had never really given the card much thought despite knowing that it sees play in Pauper tron. Well now that I actually own a copy it seems like almost a strict upgrade over Deceiver Exarch. The Exarch played two roles in this deck. The most obvious is the synergy with the commander Roon of the Hidden Realm in that it lets you to untap Roon to reuse the flicker ability. However, I found that I pretty much never used it like this in actual games because 5 mana for a single flicker is quite expensive even if it is all at instant speed. The second role that the Exarch has actually accomplished for me during real games is keeping me alive by tapping down a scary threat before attacks. There is no better feeling that preventing a devastating The Ur-Dragon attack. However, obviously this effect is near useless vs go wide strategies, so the Dignitary is the clear upgrade. Sad because this deck started life as the Derevi, Empyrial Tactician precon and that was one of the few cards that had stuck around all this time.
Arcane Denial -> Venser, Shaper Savant
Yes Arcane Denial costs less mana, but it's just boring to have a generic counter spell imo. Would rather have an on theme ETB effect that I can abuse with flickers. Venser + Emiel if I get to untap is a problem for opponents.
Darksteel Ingot -> Skyclave Relic
A strict upgrade over Darksteel Ingot. Tryhards prefer 2 cmc mana rocks but I like the ingot because it lets me activate abilities of black and red stuff I steal with Agent of Treachery
