This deck is amazing. Yay for allies!!

Have you considered Conjurer's Closet ?

Thanks lil_cheez! I really appreciate it. Conjurer's Closet is something that I considered once upon a time, but not in awhile. however my initial thoughts are similar to spells like Doubling Chant: Its a great spell that works really well with allies, but because this deck is built to have reliable card advantage (using lots of utility creatures) I don't think its a good fit.

That being said! I hope to make a Modern Ally Primer page sometime soon, and I can totally see that card fitting in a slower, more control focused deck, so thank you for suggesting it!

I'd be wary about using Halimar Excavator when you aren't using it as an instant win. The main reason is because of dredge decks, token decks, combo decks, control decks and abzan decks are all using some form of graveyard interaction. Snapcaster Mage, Scavenging Ooze, everything in dredge, Tasigur, the Golden Fang, Tarmogoyf and Tasigur, the Golden Fang are all going to hurt you when you use Halimar Excavator in this regard.

Femme_Fatale You're definitely right, and its a problem with running mill in modern. Unfortunately its a necessary evil for this deck type. Now that you mention it, I should probably sideboard Scavenging Ooze myself to deal with that. I can produce enough green mana to exile anything I want, he can get rid of Emrakrul (though not before the graveyard gets shuffled in), and he's a creature.

I mentioned tasigur twice by accident. I meant Lingering Souls. You could try Relic of Progenitus/Grafdigger's Cage/Tormod's Crypt/Rest in Peace.

Oh, and I'd run Thrun, the Last Troll and/or Wilt-Leaf Liege over Quagnoth that is in the side, and Suppression Field over Linvala, Keeper of Silence. This lets you remove Qasali Pridemage as well, and you could put in Leyline of Sanctity to hit Scapeshift, discard and RDW.

I agree with Wilt-Leaf Liege over Quagnoth, the reasoning behind Quanoth is that he'll protect from Thoughtseize and similar effects, as well as Liliana of the Veil, but the only 1-drop discard spells I'm going to have to worry about will be on turn 1 and 2 anyways.

I'm not as sure about Suppression Field over Linvala, since I can find and cast Linvala much more reliably than the Suppression Field. Leyline of Sanctity would be good for Scapeshift though, since my deck doesn't currently pack hate for that.

Suppression Field is because of affinity. Linvala, Keeper of Silence doesn't hit all of affinity's pieces, as many of them are non-creatures.

Have you thought of running things like Restoration Angel, Cloudshift and/or Momentary Blink?

Haha its fine! I really appreciate all the feedback. Between Linvala, Keeper of Silence and Qasali Pridemage though, don't you think I could hit enough of affinitie's pieces till turn 3? One reason I absolutely have to keep 4 Qasali Pridemage in is because of Torpor Orb. Enough people run it to deal with Splinter Twin that I have to have an answer. Path to Exile Deals with Hushwing Gryff.

Restoration Angel I am still considering, though I'm having trouble finding a place for her. Yes she allows one of my creatures to dodge spot removal (though not sweeps) and is a potential ally trigger, but is that enough reason to replace an ally with her that could just as easily trigger Kabira Evangel?

I tried Cloudshift and Momentary Blink for a long time, but I eventually discovered that 2/3 times I'd rather draw an ally than a blink. Momentary blink may have a good place now however. Flashback goes well with Tracker's Instincts, I'll have enough mana to cast it reliably with Prophet of Kruphix, and I'm considering adding Reveillark again, since it can get my Prophet back from the grave.

I think all of those would probably be better than Halimar Excavator. Wouldn't Commune with the Gods be a good option? I'd also remove Birds of Paradise for another aggressive ally.

February 13, 2015 8:46 p.m.

JLenzen says... #12

Well that's kind of counter-productive, considering this isn't an aggro deck. It can win as aggro, but its primary win condition is mill. Commune with the Gods is definitely a good idea, I may consider running some combination of that with Tracker's Instincts and Lead the Stampede if there's an enchantment I can't live without. (Like Leyline of Sanctity for example).

I cover all my decisions, as well as a lot of cards I've considered but chosen not to use, in the description of the deck, newly updated.

Ghostway...? Let's you answer to WoG's.

Femme_Fatale says... #14

Ghostway is like, an alternate Doubling Chant. But the issue she/he (?) had with Doubling Chant was that it required a board state.

February 14, 2015 7:09 a.m.

JLenzen says... #15

Ghostway is something I've considered for awhile, but as Femme_Fatale ("He" by the way) pointed out, it doesn't help me if I'm behind. The way the deck works currently, if I'm top decking, everything (non-land) will help me. Although Ghostway can win games, it will ultimately make the deck more inconsistent.

Wow. This deck is amazing. It totally seems like it could be competitively viable if you're getting consistent turn 3-4 wins.

I shall test and report back +1

February 15, 2015 6:39 p.m.

JLenzen says... #17

I wouldn't say consistent turn 3-4 wins, it CAN win turn 4, but because of opponent interaction, it usually gets to around turn 6 to 9. What I like about this deck isn't the speed, but rather the ability to recover from behind and play the long haul.

Regardless thanks for your kind words! Let me know how playtesting goes, I actually can't play in tournaments as much as I would like so I'd appreciate the feedback.

Have you thought about a Simic Mill and ramp with a Craterhoof finisher?

February 15, 2015 7:16 p.m.

JLenzen says... #19

Yumuri21212 I have thought about that! I think Craterhoof Behemoth fits better in a GW ally deck because white simply has better aggro options than blue. I'm probably going to put a GW deck section in my Primer: FIRST IN THE WORLD MODERN ALLY PRIMER, but if you can show me a UG build that works well, I'd be happy to include that too.

A combo I've always enjoyed was Weird Harvest and Archive Trap. Doubt it'd see okay in this one, but it is so much fun to use~

February 15, 2015 7:24 p.m.

JLenzen says... #21

That's interesting, I've never thought about it. It especially works well in a deck like this since most mill decks don't rely on their creatures. I think I'll have to test that out in a more mill-centric ally deck, maybe cutting white...

February 15, 2015 7:29 p.m.

Yumuri21212 says... #22

Better is questionable, I come from a EDH background even then not super competitvely, But it'd be different approach by the looks of it.

February 15, 2015 7:36 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #23

The simic ally mill deck I run is this one: Excavator's Tale. I saw someone make a dimir ally mill deck, I'd say it is better because of the alternate reanimation win condition.

February 15, 2015 8:16 p.m.

JLenzen says... #24

Thats really cool! Its also a very different style of deck that I'd like to showcase. Would you mind me using it in the decks section of my Primer?

February 16, 2015 2:51 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #25

Sure. Just be warned that it is very much just modern casual, hence the tags. Like you mentioned before, the deck requires a board state presence to be of use, so therein lies its problem.

Here's the other deck I was mentioning:
