Officer am I being detained? You might have heard this line before, and after facing the deck you will probably say it for perhaps the first time. That line inspired me to build a deck based around detaining and controlling my opponents.
While originally the deck was going to be more focused around the Detain ability that belongs to Azorius, it has changed to be a control deck. Everything about the deck is just designed to stop opponents from playing. While detaining isn't the main feature of the deck anymore, it is a fantastic thing to use in conjunction with most control cards. If I can't control them with bounces and counters, Martial Law will hold them at bay for example.
Another fun combo is Blood Clock + Azorius Arrester. It allows a constant detain every turn effect in exchange for just 2 mana per turn, if I feel like continuing that cycle. Mix that with Blind Obedience it allows me to Extort, when playing him again, damaging my opponents, and healing myself. Sadly this was the only life gain I could fit into the deck.
If my opponents do manage to get anything out and ready to use, Norn's Annex is there to ping away at their life or mana. Typically you would pay the 4 life on turn 3 to bring it out to slow your opponents while you work on setting up everything needed to stop them. While risky, it really does help.
Gwafa Hazid, Profiteer is another fun card to use, and works best when paired with Curse of Exhaustion. While normally letting your opponents draw a card is not that great, the curse only let's them play 1 spell per turn. He fills up their hands, while stopping me from getting attacked. If they can't toss spells out every single turn they will be forced to discard. That's where Grand Abolisher Comes into play. It limits their cast amount even further, while preventing control from being used on me.
Azor's Elocutors play a big role later on in the game, as a secondary win condition. It's best to get them out as soon as possible. Since my opponents will be completely locked down this allows me them to finish their long boring speeches in peace, thus securing the game.
In addition to all of that there are your typical bounce cards, and a few counter spells. The counter spell cards are not really as important to how this deck functions, but it's always good to shut down some destroy enchantment cards, as my opponent has no way to counter my spell back because of Curse of Exhaustion.
Another good combo, is using Curse of Exhaustion with Knowledge Pool, as it prevents any opponent with the curse on them from casting any spells. Better yet, since they aren't recasting anything put into the pool, then I get access to their spells if they continue to try casting.
If you see any good uses that I have missed, I would love to hear about them. I'm always looking to improve.
