This is my current American Control build, and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'd like to make it more competitive. The goal of this deck is to stay alive long enough to throw out a win condition and well, win. Every card in the deck helps towards this goal.
-Creature Control: Creatures can get you killed pretty easily, so I aim to not get killed by creatures using some cards to get rid of them. This includes: Azorius Charm, Supreme Verdict, Warleader's Helix, Mizzium Mortars and occasionally Elspeth, Sun's Champion or a Detention Sphere. Jace, Architect of Thought can slow down their creatures too.
-Life Gain: Some damage will inevitably get through, so we need to counteract that as best as possible, often with another bonus as well. For this purpose I use: Elixir of Immortality, Warleader's Helix, and of course Sphinx's Revelation
-Counterspells: Sometimes you just need to get rid of a threat before it can even be threatening. I'm not too counter heavy but I am running a playset of Dissolve with more counters in the side so it works out alright.
-Card Draw: What's a control deck without card draw? I do not want to find out. Draw fills your hand with answers and gets you closer to your win conditions. My card draw includes: Azorius Charm, Jace, Architect of Thought, and Sphinx's Revelation
-Win Conditions: Now onto the good stuff, the stuff you use to actually win, because winning is generally a good thing. My win conditions are: Elspeth, Sun's Champion, AEtherling, and Assemble the Legion. I have also recently added in a copy of Purphoros, God of the Forge because of his absolutely fantastic synergy with both Elspeth, Sun's Champion and Assemble the Legion. He may not seem like the best choice because what if I dont have anything to go with him? Well, I have enough draw, and it hasn't happened yet! I also hope to get both a second Assemble the Legion and Purphoros, God of the Forge for even more fun. They all curve nicely with eachother as well, if not much controlling is needed those turns.
I know my mana base is kind of iffy, it's nowhere near complete, especially with the M15 lands that just came out and me needing my Temple of Ephipany, but it mostly works, although sometimes i get too much or even in some cases no red, and this is just a need for more duals. Suggestions here very much appreciated.
Maybeboard: I'm considering Magma Spray and Blind Obedience for probably the sideboard as help against some of my decks worse matchups, like RDW and Burn. Also thinking of adding (Main?) some Celestial Flare because they are great against protection, which is another huge weakness of this deck (I only have so many Supreme Verdict). Having 1 or 2 Keranos, God of Storms seems like a potential win condition, but I haven't really had a chance to play around with him yet. I really want to try him out, but I'm not so sure especially with me already wanting a second Purphoros, God of the Forge and Assemble the Legion, I'd have no idea what to take out.
