Welcome to my newest pride and joy: Aminatou, the Fateshifter .

the goal of this deck is overwhelm the opposition with a myriad of Planeswalkers, capitalizing on their abilities, blinking permanents to gain double value from them in a turn (or to get a second use out of the Planeswalker abilities,) all while defending my board state with board wipes and protection spells such as Cyclonic Rift , AEtherize , and so on.

This deck isn't considered a Stax deck, but more so control/superfriends, with an ETB/blink element.

The Beginning

The idea for this deck begin early 2018, before Aminatou was announced. I had the desire to create a janky Perplexing Chimera deck feature Phage the Untouchable and Fractured Identity . While the idea stayed in my mind, I ultimately took apart my previous Esper deck because it just wasn't getting the job done for me anymore.

Moving forward to the Commander 2018 spoilers, I initially disregarded Aminatou as a card due to the bizarre nature of her abilities. Ultimately let down by the deck list, I moved on with my ideas. it wasn't until late August, a whole month after she was announced, that I realized her potential as a commander.

I spent a total of five months building her. I originally intended her to be my Perplexing Chimera deck, and built her as such. it wasn't until about two months into the process that I decided that the deck just wasn't good enough. That's when the idea of Esper superfriends came to mind...

The Planeswalkers

Esper superfriends is an archetype I haven't seen much of. Aside from the Atraxa, Praetors' Voice superfriends decks and my friends' Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis and Nicol Bolas, the Arisen superfriends decks; I've had no real experience with planeswalker decks.

Each Planeswalker has been careful selected for this deck, all of which offer a hand towards victory, whether it's through card advantage, removal, or a straight up win condition.

Protection

Given that Planeswalkers are the bread and butter of this deck, I need ways to protect them. This is done with two different methods: Tokens and Board Control.

These are used to generate blockers for my Planeswalkers. while i do have a modest amount of creatures in the deck, most of them are not disposable as I want to be be utilizing them for this ETB abilities (i.e. Cloudblazer and Baleful Strix ), which makes the deciding to block with them more tricky. This is why a small token package exists in the deck.

Controlling the board is crucial for this deck to succeed. It's easier to have a large control package in esper than it is to have a token package, at least when it comes to a superfriends deck. The instant special combat tricks like AEtherize and Cyclonic Rift help keep the board clear and keep pressure off of my walkers, while the on board control cards like Maze of Ith help keep people from attacking me, or at the very least, mitigate the damage.

Win Conditions

Every deck needs a win condition. As a matter of fact, every deck needs multiple win conditions, and this deck is no different. This deck has provided an interesting challenge to me in finding a way to win with a plethora of Planeswalkers.

The first thought i had was to simply out-value my opponents with the walkers i control, and use them to gain an insurmountable advantage so that I could run away with the game. While this is a viable strategy, it is far from consistent, as my meta offers a healthy balance of removal and ramp. It will be difficult to pull off a massive value engine consistently.

My second though came in the form of focusing a few of my walkers to ultimate in order to gain the upper hand. After careful consideration, I've narrowed it down to the following:

Teferi, Temporal Archmage

After my first several games with the deck, I quickly realized that this walker is far more power than I initially thought. While being aware of the Teferi, Temporal Archmage + The Chain Veil combo, i also realized how valuable the ability to untap 4 permanents truly was, combined with Aminatou's ability to blink any permanent, i could untap up to 8 permanents for an absurd amount of ramp (seriously, untapping Gilded Lotus and the rocks you need multiple times provided a crazy amount of value that i didn't anticipate.)

On top of that, his ultimate allows my walkers abilities to be used once EVERY turn at instant speed, which provides a near unstoppable game-plan.

Teferi, Hero of Dominaria + Venser, the Sojourner

These to walkers serve the same functional role in this deck: They both are designed to destroy my opponents.

While they lack the ability to reduce their life to zero, or to empty their library, they do frustrate and cripple the opponents by exiling everything they own whenever I draw a card, or play a spell. The two are the main walkers of the deck and are the ones I want to protect at all costs.

Ob Nixilis Reignited

Ob Nixilis is arguably one of the best walkers ever printed. For you get the option to either draw a card or destroy a creature, and his ultimate essentially reads "Kill target player" since everyone should consistently draw cards, and with the amount of card draw this deck has within its' walkers and creatures, cursing someone with this emblem would quickly destroy them. Couple this with the ability to use multiple Planeswalker activations per turn ( Oath of Teferi and The Chain Veil ) and other supporting Planeswalker cards ( Deepglow Skate and Contagion Engine ), and you have killing machine.

Victory by Teferi, Temporal Archmage + The Chain Veil Infinite loop to create 100 Venser, the Sojourner emblems. Table scooped.
