If you plan on moving this to modern after rotation I would highly suggest adding Arcbound Ravager to the deck.

Thoughts on Inspiring Call?

Also, maybe Daghatar the Adamant as a curve topper, good beater, and mana dump/creature booster together with Hardened Scales as 'pay 3: remove 1 counter from a creature and add 1-5 counters to target creature'?

This deck looks really fun to play! I'm planning on creating a casual build of it. Could you recommend a budget substitute for Nissa, Voice of Zendikar?

Nissa, Voice of Zendikar should drop in price by a bit once tarkir ends its stay in standard as she her usability will decrease (even though she will still be in standard for 1 more rotation).

boopdoop, thanks for the comment!

Unfortunately, theres not really a budget alternative that will put counters on all of your creatures. However, Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is a very recent addition to the deck. I played it for months without her and it still performed great. If I were to replace Nissa, Voice of Zendikar with anything it would probably be a forth Abzan Falconer and two more Endless Ones.

Here's a little tip for when you play the deck: Don't cast Abzan Falconer too early because he will be primary target for your opponent's removal. Ideally, you want to setup a board state with a few creatures with +1/+1 counters, then cast Abzan Falconer before combat to Fly in for major damage. Also, Outlast Abzan Falconer the first chance you get. The extra toughness will save him from most damage based removal in the current format.

Tyrannosary, thanks for the suggestion. Arcbound Ravager is a great card, but I don't think belongs in this deck. I do not have any artifacts to sacrifice and therefore have no to add +1/+1 counters it. Also, I don't play any artifact creatures so Arcbound Ravager's Modular ability is wasted. That being said, you've still got the right idea about the deck considering I do play Servant of the Scale and it basically has a same ability as Arcbound Ravager.

Hangarback Walker..... But anyways yeah I was thinking Arcbound Ravager's effect worked on any creatures not just artifacts, my bad.

ArchFline, that's helpful to know. If her price drops enough, I'll include at least 2 of her.

darleen, I think I'll do that. Thank you so much for the advice!

NotSquishedYet, thanks for the comments and suggestions!

With regards to Inspiring Call, its good against a control matchup and against board wipes. However, there aren't a lot of control players in my local meta so I haven't sideboarded in the card very often. The card draw was the primary reason I added it but with a three mana CMC its a little slower than I'd like. If a decent card draw spell with a lower CMC is released, I would probably swap it out.

As far as Daghatar the Adamant is concerned, I have given him a lot of consideration. The issue is that, at four mana, he is a little slow for the deck. Before I added Den Protector, I was playing Salt Road Quartermasters. It has a very similar ability to Daghatar the Adamant and its a bit easier to activate (its 2 generic and one green versus one generic and two green). Salt Road Quartermasters is a good combat trick and a reliable source of +1/+1 counters if the game goes long.

boopdoop, one more thing... I totally forgot about Salt Road Quartermasters! I used to run some in this deck before I got my Den Protectors. It doesn't put +1/+1 counters on all your creatures like Nissa, Voice of Zendikar, but its still a great source of +1/+1 counters in the mid to late game. If you also have a Hardened Scales in play (which is very likely), you can remove one +1/+1 counter from Salt Road Quartermasters then put that +1/+1 counter back onto itself. That will trigger Hardened Scales giving you an additional +1/+1 counter that you can move to another creature afterward. Also, your opponent maybe not account for that interaction so you can also use it as a combat trick.

March 9, 2016 12:11 p.m.

Oh wow. I never realized you could put it back on him. I suggested Daghatar because a 4 drop 4/4 with vigilance is nice, and Scales could make him an 8/8 on entry, theoretically, and I knew you could bounce counters between any of your creatures one-to-another for the same effect. I, personally, like the ability to do it remotely even at a bit higher cost, but I see what you mean about Nissa's swarm tactic. I would drop the Endless Ones for him, because of their slow value trade; they're just so much less efficient than Servant of the Scale which you can bounce counters to with Daghatar for combat tricks, Scales, AND doubling (or more) each counter's value.

Hardened Scales only activates when a counter is placed on a creature. Daghatar the Adamant enters with the counters already on him, so Hardened Scales would not have any effect.

Nebman227, while making a Graft deck some time ago, I looked up the specific rulings on that type of thing. Unless the rules have changed since I looked, the game counts them as being placed on him. I will check again to be sure.

April 3, 2016 9:11 p.m.

At another look, though I do not know if it is new, the first ruling on Hardened Scales on Gatherer does indeed say that. Salt Road Quartermasters and Daghatar the Adamant are made larger on entry.

Thanks for clarifying that for me, I hadn't read the gatherer page and was just going by the wording of the cards.

No problem. The quote on my profile's accurate: I'm only the local rules guy because of how often I try to bend them. ;)

You can put Fragmentize instead of Natural State in the side. Also I would suggest Fortified Village instead of Canopy Vista - not only is it cheaper but imo it's better.

Mokan, I am considering Fortified Village and was looking at the price earlier today. I agree, I think the reveal lands are better especially in an aggro deck like this one. Thanks!

I don't see Walking Ballista. Any reason for that?

February 11, 2017 3:57 p.m.

darleen says... #21

EnderPlaysCompetitiveMTG, Walking Ballista isn't on the deck primarily because of its cost. It also seems a bit too mana intensive and too slow. Spending 4-6 mana to deal 3 or 4 damage to my opponent just doesn't seem like that much value to me. I think Walking Ballista is better as a later game bomb in a deck that reliably produce more mana than this deck can. If I did add it in though, it would replace Endless One.

Thoughts on Rishkar, Peema Renegade? Is it a budget restriction that is keeping it out? It seems like it would be good to me.

February 11, 2017 4:54 p.m.

darleen says... #23

K00lDudE1, Rishkar, Peema Renegade is decent but I don't think it has a place in this deck. The ability to make creatures with +1/+1 counters tap for mana is kind of irrelevant because I would much rather be attacking with my creatures than tapping them for mana. This deck has a very low mana curve. The ramp Rishkar, Peema Renegade provides isn't really needed.
