This is a big numbers Gruul deck. It focuses on fast ramp, huge hasted creatures, and drawing fistfuls of cards.

Deck Foundation

Arlinn Kord  // Arlinn, Embraced by the Moon provides a lot of flexibility for a Gruul Oathbreaker. Her +1 grants a creature haste, vigilance, and a solid +2/+2 buff. This synergizes with combat triggers and pushes the potential of exert creatures. Transforming Arlinn produces a 2/2 blocker, but more importantly, her reverse side -1 can be a nightmare for other aggro decks and hatebears.

The deck brings one shot potential, especially with the inclusion of Xenagos, God of Revels and the Aggravated Assault + Savage Ventmaw combo. That said, it also specializes in keeping opposing Oathbreakers off the board using evasive creatures like Questing Beast Glorybringer and even Yavimaya Dryad . The extra combats sub-theme can also push combat damage into lethal or one-shot territory while also providing additional combat triggers.

Hunter's Insight takes the signature spell role, sustaining the deck's aggression into the mid-late game. Its also attempts to lower the deck's initial threat level in comparison to Berserk or Green Sun's Zenith . With the necessity of aggressive ramping, our opening hand can quickly run low. Connecting even with an Arlinn buffed mana dork will act as a 3 mana Harmonize . It's important to note that Hunter's Insight's effect activates on combat damage to planeswalkers in addition to players, which can be significant in Oathbreaker.

Card Choices

Mirri's Guile - While ramping, I found that I more often had rather surplus mana available in the opening few turns. In my playtesting experience, Sylvan Library sometimes sat in my hand, competing with ramp on turn 2. That said, Library is still a green staple.

Song of the Dryads - With three opponents, Song of the Dryads is a natural inclusion. I believe this is card quite powerful in Oathbreaker. It can effectively shut down opposing Oathbreakers until your opponent can find enchantment removal.

Voracious Hydra , Verdurous Gearhulk - Although this deck is usually the aggressor, I wanted to make sure that I had the mana available to cast a large creature one turn before Arlinn as well. These creatures help to deter lower avg. cmc aggro decks on turns 3 and 4 as I attempt to bring in Arlinn or Xenagos if he's in hand.

Veil of Summer & Heroic Intervention - These cards are essential to protect our creatures, especially when attempting to cast Hunter's Insight. Cards like Prowling Serpopard and Dosan the Falling Leaf may be worth testing as well when faced with removal heavy opponents.

Alternative Paths: Henge vs Embercleave

The maybeboard represents cards that just missed the cut, are meta specific, or are current considerations. I want to point out The Great Henge and Embercleave in particular. Both work quite well in this deck but also take it in a couple different directions.

The Great Henge worked best when attempting a slower, more sustained path to victory. The lifegain can nullify burn and the consistent card draw gives mana dorks a second wind in the later turns. This version of the deck takes detours to kill opposing Oathbreakers and play politics while preparing for a surprise lethal swing. I really enjoy using Etali, Primal Storm in this version as well. Eternal Witness and Finale of Devastation slot into this version, with Finale doubling as an additional way to push lethal damage.

Embercleave is simply hilarious. I want to give credit to plushpenguin's Xenagos, God of Beatdown deck. It includes Godo, Bandit Warlord as a means to not only put Embercleave straight onto the battlefield from the deck but also provide an additional form of extra combats. Godo and Embercleave make the deck more explosive and lead to faster wins.

In true Gruul form: forgo politics, determine the most threatening opponent, and one-shot them on turn 4–5. I feel this is the most competitive version of the deck at this time. That said, you do sacrifice a little consistency for faster wins due to the chance of drawing Embercleave before godo.

Goals

In my playgroup I'm usually the most aggressive deck, surrounded by affinity, combo, and control. From your perspective, does this deck have enough survivability against other aggressive decks? On the other hand, do you feel additional resiliance against creature removal is needed? I'm trying to continue tightening and improving the deck. Suggestions and feedback are welcome!

Cuts: Deus of Calamity , Aggravated Assault

Additions: Deflecting Swat , Quartzwood Crasher

I'm really excited to test out Deflecting Swat and Quartzwood Crasher. Deus of Calamity is still an excellent card, but I feel is a bit weaker in multiplayer. Aggravated Assault has been the 58th card for a while. My games tend to end before I can go infinite with Ventmaw or Neheb. That said, Deflecting Swat is an excellent addition. While similar to Bolt Bend , Deflecting Swat's total cost reduction with Arlinn in play should be very strong.
