Introduction

Hey! You! Yeah you... Do you like shrooms, winning, plants, hella lotta mana, shrooms, cards for dayz, watching your opponents struggle, infinite combos, shrooms, destroying everything, shrooms, kicking puppies, stealing candy from small children, more shrooms, and just being a generally unpleasant person? If you answered yes to at least half of these questions, then I hate your guts. But... this deck may be for you.

I made this deck because my new meta demands a more cruel approach to commander than my previous one. Here you can't really get away with just pointing the finger at someone else and hoping you won't get noticed. You can get away with garbage like Keranos Land Destruction though, so I decided to build something that'll really give my opponents hell.

So... Why Ghave? As a commander, he is very versatile and resilient, as well as generally powerful. He can attract hate from opponents and shrug it off with relative ease when built properly. Moreover, you can fit a lot of different win conditions into both his colors and his playstyle. Whether you want to combo out, grind out your opponents, or just get big, you can do it.

This is a competitive stax list in the process of being built. The main pieces still being acquired are the tutors, and the deck is still fairly strong without it, which ought to say something about it.

The Strategy

The endgame of the deck is to assemble a combo to gain a token sacrifice loop, and abuse that loop with your stax pieces, until you've given yourself sufficient advantages to close out the game. The faster you can set the combo up the better, but you do have pieces to slow your opponents down while you set it up, giving you a cushion of time to set up. Our general combo pieces include cards to add counters, cards to double tokens, mana cards, and stax cards.

The mana cards are the main thing we want to use to abuse Ghave's token making ability. All three of them do the same general thing, turn tokens into mana, which you will use to make more tokens. Ashnod's altar only needs one other doubling effect for infinite tokens, either of the other ones require Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, or any other combination of two effects to go infinite.

Counter doublers and token doublers both serve the same purpose: Going infinite. If you get out a single copy of any card that does either with an altar, you can continuously produce tokens. With doubled tokens, you can sacrifice one to an altar for mana, and the other to replace the counter Ghave used up. With counters doubled you can create one token to make mana, then another to replace both counters.

When you have the setup to create combos in place there is no small amount of pieces to add to the loop to end games quickly, though not every single one will be mentioned here.

  • Blood Artist and friends - Every card that likes to watch things die will drain your opponents in a single turn when you activate your loop, so they were an easy include.
  • Pact Effects - Each of these will watch things die and clear the board, which is why there aren't many board wipes in the deck.
  • Woodfall Primus - This will do what a Smokestack would do much more quickly, though it requires a more thorough setup to activate. Basically if you can put a +1/+1 counter on it before you use it on a sac outlet, especially an altar to produce mana, you can one sided board wipe all lands, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers, and have quite simply won the game.
  • Puppeteer Clique - This card use the same combo idea as Primus, only they work with creatures, and require the extra help of a pact effect to work. The idea is to sac clique with a pact out, thus forcing opponents to sac a creature, have clique come back, thus taking a sacrificed creature, then putting a counter on clique to remove the -1/-1 counter, and repeating the loop for a non-red Insurrection. Quite a fun game ending combo.
  • Dark Depths - More of a nonbo than a combo, because Doubling Season doubles the ice counters when it is out, and not the legendary token, but that really doesn't matter when you have infinite mana. A 20/20 flying indestructible is nothing to sneeze at. It is only in the deck as an alternate road to victory if you happen to need it.

I'm currently looking into adding more taxing effects, such as Winter Orb, Sphere of Resistance, Static Orb, and Contamination. I feel these effects will be fantastic for the deck because after I get an altar effect down, I won't need to use lands as often, and the taxes generally won't hurt me as much as my opponents. I'm considering what to take out. here are my current thoughts.

Out: Erebos, God of the Dead, Black Market, Mentor of the Meek, and Sidisi, Undead Vizier. These cards seem to function much more poorly than I thought they would. Erebos mainly dras card, as well as mentor, but with how many on board interactions the deck uses, the extra cards just don't feel worth the slots. Meanwhile, black market can get going pretty big, but often if I'm sacrificing enough creatures to make it huge, then I already am producing all the mana I need, so it feels too redundant. Sidisi is just a really crappy tutor for this deck. I can't seem to reliably reuse his effect in this list, so he's really just a 6 mana Diabolic Intent. Razaketh does his job much better anyway.
