Jhoira's Glass Cannon | PRIMER {EDH}

Commander / EDH Artifact Combo Primer Ramp UR (Izzet)

RJGiel

Glass-cannon artifact value deck centered around big plays and drawing cards. The deck can go over the top very fast, but is also fragile.

Wincons

The deck usually wins by massively overwhelming the opponent with card advantage, there are some incidental combos in the deck, however.

Protection

While the deck can be very fast and go over the top easily, it's also extremely fragile. (Mass) Artifact removal and consistent spot removal on Jhoira can leave you completely helpless. This interaction is mainly used to stop your opponents from completely ruining your boardstate.

  • Force of Will is the most obvious choice as it will allow you to still make your plays without needing to leave mana open.
  • Disallow isn't a counterspell I'm happy to run as three mana is just awful, but the fact that it can Stifle certain abilities (namely, this deck's nemesis; Bane of Progress) makes it a must-have inclusion.
  • Swan Song and Arcane Denial serve as cheap interactions.

Recursion

The deck doesn't nescessarily play the Graveyard deck, but recursion is required to bring back valueable artifacts that got destroyed, or ocassionaly to cheat in something big.

Specific Answers

The deck runs a number of cards that don't necesarrily work with the decks gameplan, but are required deal with specific situations. Being a glass cannon doesn't mean that there should be no outs.

  • Platinum Emperion protects your life total against hyper aggro decks.
  • Wurmcoil Engine is a solid source of lifegain, which can be required in more grindy games.
  • All Is Dust and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon allow dealing with permanents that are normally out of reach for these colors.
  • Walking Ballista is an excellent and versitaile creature that can remove certain threats or provide extra reach.
  • Tormod's Crypt deals with GY-centered decks. Can be recurred with the Goblins or Emry.

Mana Sinks

The deck is capable of assembling massive amounts of mana relatively easy. Spending this mana optimal requires some mana sinks.

Where is card X?

After a lot of testing, I removed some cards that seem like an obvious inclusion.

  • Hellkite Tyrant is extremely powerful and might come back in, but it usually felt clunky and people could see it coming from miles away. I had it connect a couple of times and it immediately won me the game from there, but this happened only 1-2/10 games. The other games it was a card that you weren't happy to see.
  • Hellkite Igniter was a lot of fun and caused the most styleful wins. But just like the Tyrant, it's slow and clunky. Most games the card felt like a win-more play.
  • Blightsteel Colossus is obviously very powerful and wins games easily. The issue with the card is that both for me or the opponent it just felt bad, like a cheap win. For this reason I excluded it.
  • Trash for Treasure is a solid card, but rather slow. Both Goblins and Emry do this better and repeatedly.
