Basic Premise

I decided to make a bit of a thought experiment deck. What if Ashiok were a legal general?

Since I'm already playing an illegal commander, I decided to put a few tweaks on his ability to hopefully make him a bit more viable for multiplayer and to build upon his theme.

Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver

+2: Exile the top three cards of EACH PLAYER'S library

-X: Put a creature card with converted mana cost X FROM EXILE onto the battlefield under your control. That creature is a nightmare in addition to its other types. (This may be from any sort of exile)

-10: Exile all cards from all opponents' hands and graveyards.

Starting Loyalty: 3

By modifying his abilities, we allow ourselves an incredibly interesting design space: what if we built a deck to exploit the exile zone like many decks exploit the graveyard? This allows us to use unconventional cards to build powerful synergies - and if that's not what EDH is about, I don't know what is.

General Strategy

  • Graveyard hate is here primarily to stockpile your opponent's exile zone to feed Uncle Ashiok. Hating on graveyard decks is something I feel vaguely ashamed of as a Dredge player, but I feel its justified here.

  • We have some spells and creatures that let us find specific cards from our decks and our opponent's decks and exile them. These cards are normally very underwhelming, especially in EDH, but when they function as creature tutors for our general, they become more palatable.

  • We also have a range of creatures who can be put into play from the exile zone, ranging from Misthollow Griffin and Eternal Scourge to Cheatyface. Note: Cheatyface is not legal in commander, but neither is our general, and ol' Cheaty is just a load of fun without being overpowered.

  • We have a subtheme of proliferating or otherwise increasing our general's loyalty. Ashiok ticking up by two a turn isn't the most impressive thing in a multiplayer format, so we need a little help along the way. These effects have splash benefit with our other planeswalkers, as well as cards such as Astral Cornucopia and Everflowing Chalice

-We have one main combo option in this deck.

Deck Notes

-Ashiok cannot play cards from exile which are face down. As such, we've avoided most cards which exile cards face down. Gonti, Lord of Luxury and Praetor's Grasp are exceptions to this rule, but are otherwise too on theme to exclude.
