Avacyn, Angel of Hope

Avacyn is the embodiment of what a commander should be. A stunning figure whose mere presence on the field can be game changing. By herself, she's a flying, vigilant powerhouse, who protects herself from many forms of removal, and puts an opponent on a three-turn clock. When viewed in conjunction with your field, her wings shelter all you own, protecting your field, making all your boardwipes mono-directional, and even enabling some soft combos. (Magus of the Disk/Nevinyrral's Disk every turn, or Armageddon/ Catastrophe to wipe only your opponents lands)

The Deck

The deck has two primary focuses: ramp into Avacyn as quickly as possible, and the blow stuff up. With 17 ramp cards and 15 fieldwipes, it accomplishes these two tasks fairly well. In total, there are 23 removal cards in the deck, giving the deck a control function. As for the ramp, turn 3-4 Avacyn is the average, with the best being turn 2, greaved and swinging.

The rest of the deck is support and utility. As much protection for avacyn as is useful, with cards like Mother of Runes, Eight-and-a-Half-Tails, and Whispersilk Cloak serving the double purpose of protection and the ability to swing through defenses, and extraneous hexproof cards such as Mask of Avacyn being omitted due to redundancy, mana cost, etc. Many of the creatures fall into the category of "Good Stuff," either to add to an "Angel" theme, such as Linvala, or simply because the deck generates the mana to easily cast them, such as Ulamog. Creatures such as Palisade Giant and Guardian of the Gateless strongly benefit from Invincibility, almost conferring it to you.

I have many decks, some much stronger than this, (as I am a big fan of competitive combos), but this is by far the most fun deck I can play. It interacts heavily with the rest of the board, and while it is capable of a soft-lock, it always has to go for the hard win, which is perfect when you're playing with a group that doesn't like you ending the game turn 4. (See Oona, Queen of the Combo, Marath, Will of the Combo) That said, this deck will often turn the game into a round of Archenemy, and you may find yourself casting Avacyn for up to 20 mana, as a game's worth of people try to answer her again and again. But it's a deck that encourages good hard competition. Every battle is hard-fought, often won, but leave your opponents feeling good about themselves for the fight they were able to put up, not frustrated at a loss they could not prevent.
