Ayli on the Daily (Competitive Ayli Primer WIP)

Commander / EDH WB (Orzhov)

"Welcome, offerings, to the sanctuary," said Ayli, raising her arms. "The presence of the god Mangeni, whose second name is Ula, whose voice sings the Song of Devouring, will be your final sanctuary."

Welcome to my competitive Ayli primer! I have been working on this deck for about a year now and update it every month or so. It's still changing and becoming more consistent, but it's at a place right now where I feel that it's consistent enough to make a primer. As a clarification, this is not a tier one deck. I wouldn't even say it's tier two. But it's good, and can win on turn one with a god hand and goldfishes about turn five through interaction.

This decklist is sorted into seven custom categories. Here's a brief rundown:
  1. Holy Grounds - Not much to say here, other than that these are lands. They produce mana. Some are better at it than others.

  2. Carnal, Bloody Murder - This is our removal suite. I like to have a toolbox of removal at my fingertips, so I don't run redundancy like Damnation and Wrath of God

  3. Pilgrims - These are all the creatures (and Elspeth) that we utilize for value.

  4. Ritual Sacrifice - These are out sac outlets and reanimation effects

  5. Twisted Rituals - These cards didn't fit an existing category so here are our misc cards

  6. Devotion's Reward - Our tutor and draw suite is in here. All these cards serve to get you card advantage, in one way or the other.

  7. Final Summoning - Much like the summoning of the Eldrazi, these combos will wreak havoc, and more often than not win you the game outright.

Compared to other Orzhov commanders, I picked Ayli for a few reasons.
  1. She is aggressively costed - You can easily cast her turn two, occasionally one, and for that price you get a 2/3 deathtouch body. Although she can sacrifice, I find myself mostly using her to get people to ignore about my boardstate.

  2. She has tons of utility - You can turn all your creatures into life at instant speed for a few mana, or if the game is more grindy, exile choice permanents an opponent controls.

  3. She's cool - Of all the Orzhov commanders, her flavor and art won me over almost instantly.

You'll Enjoy My Ayli If:

  1. You enjoy closing games with combos.
  2. You like aggressive, hard hitting decks
  3. You're ok with following relatively linear paths to victory
  4. You like orzhov colors

You Won't Enjoy My Ayli If:

  1. You play in a slower meta
  2. You don't like winning through combos that can include infinite loops.
  3. You want to fully utilize her lifegain plan

"We must push through the pain to heal our world"

A former Kamsa cleric, Ayli worshiped her god blindly. Things changed for her, however, when her gods emerged from their dormancy. The truth was laid bare: These were not true gods, but rater horrific eldritch beings of immense power. Ayli, blinded by her faith and driven insane by these horrors, led her followers into the servitude of Ulamog.

"I believed in a beautiful god. But this is the true face of the divine."

Turning to human sacrifice and horrific rituals, Ayli's religous fervor, which once made her a force for good, now makes her a terrifying foe. Her world unraveling, the only way to prolong survival is to continue to serve her horrific god - lure innocents to sacrifice in their names. But when everyone else is gone, she will live or die at the whim of her otherworldly master

"Romanticize it, glamorize it, call it what you will. To me, it will always be carnal, bloody murder."

As I stated earlier, Ayli is a great choice for the command zone because of her cost and stats, but I'd like to delve even deeper into my choice here.

Let's start by discussing Orzhov in commander. Most Orzhov decks are based around life totals, either increasing them incrementally (think Karlov), Swapping life totals with opponents,

ill get to this later
