Maybeboard

Welcome to the trashpile. This is an aristocrats/stax/combo deck built to abuse the Ayli and Lurrus value train. The goal of this deck is to take game actions and make it so your opponents can't take game actions. Then you win somehow.

Special thanks to Tazildayah for some inspiration on combo lines.

You will probably enjoy playing this deck if:

  • You like to win by accruing incremental value over time.
  • You like to play from the graveyard.
  • You like to play with hatebears and prison pieces.
  • You like "puzzle decks"

You will probably not enjoy playing this deck if:

  • You want the most optimal combo build for cEDH
  • You don't enjoy mass discard and land destruction
  • You don't enjoy parsing complex board states
  • You don't want to win with combos

What's the gameplan, you ask?

Good question! Maybe the answer is three cards deeper into your library. This is a deck built around sacrificing and recurring small creatures for value or stax. The goal is to durdle as much as possible every turn. Filling the graveyard, and eventually playing combo pieces from it to win the game.

Often times, you won't need to play Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim until the late game, if at all. The unnofficial commander of this deck is Lurrus of the Dream-Den. Lurrus lets us sacrifice our creatures for value and then replay them to do it all again. Also, Lurrus lets us treat our graveyard like our hand.

Value creatures:

Honorary Mentions:

  • Bitterblossom: Classic token generator. Use it to not die, or use it to generate value somehow.
  • Legion's Landing  : A 1/1 creature that flips into a land? Combine this with Armageddon for a good time.
  • Lotus Petal: Repeatable in our deck for a good time.

Hatebears and Prison Pieces:

Remember, the goal is to take game actions, but not let anyone else take game actions. Fun is a zero-sum game.

Bears:

  • Drannith Magistrate: One-sided hate for a number of powerful strategies.
  • Ethersworn Cannonist: Almost a 2 mana Rule of Law. Sacrifice this to Ayli or Skullclamp if you ever need to break the Law.
  • Grand Abolisher: We get to do things, but they don't get to do things.
  • Kataki, War's Wage: Taxes. Also, use this as a pseudo time-walk/board-wipe by playing it, passing turn and then sacrificing it to Ayli or Viscera seer before you untap.
  • Spirit of the Labyrinth: We don't draw cards, so neither should our opponents.
  • Thalia, Guardion of Thraben: Most of our good cards are creatures, but still be careful when you play this.

Prison:

*Except for us, that is.

Ok, but how do we win?

With a few combos, of course. There's a couple of criteria these combos need to fill. First, they should be playable from our graveyard. This makes them tutorable with Entomb, compatible with Lion's Eye Diamond, and recurable with Lurrus.

Primary wincon: Assemble Grindstone + Painter's Servant . This only kills one player at a time, so be careful who you choose, and use politics if necessary. Grindstone is great on it's own, and is a really strong tutor target in the early game.

Secondary wincon: Assemble Animate Dead + Leonin Relic-Warder with Zulaport Cutthroat in play. Sub in Dance of the Dead, Blood Artist, or Cruel Celebrant as necessary.

Things that totally wreck us:

Basically, grave-hate. Leyline of the Void and Rest in Peace are likely the worst culprits. The best option for this is to tutor up Leonin Relic-Warder and use it to get rid of the offending piece. (Then use it later to combo off and win!) You could alternatively gain enough life to cast Ayli and use her activated ability to get rid of the offending piece.

Another thing that totally wrecks us is people countering or removing Lurrus. Good luck with that :) Animate Dead and Dance of the Dead are your friends.
