Azami, Mistress of Control

Commander / EDH*

smthomas

This is a Mono-U deck with Azami, Lady of Scrolls at the helm. It's designed to play the traditional Blue mage role at the table while also developing broken combos and synergies to play with the long game in mind.

This deck features several combos that you can use to either slow down all of your opponents or end the game outright. They are as follows:

This will give you infinite untaps of all non-land permanents when activated. Can produce infinite draw with Azami, Lady of Scrolls out, infinite counterspells with Patron Wizard, and much more.

This will give you infinite draw/discard. This is better than the Azami combo because it allows you to mill out the table as long as you have a way to shuffle your graveyard into your library. Options from worst to best are Feldon's Cane -> Elixir of Immortality -> Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre/Kozilek, Butcher of Truth. Other cards that do similar things but aren't worth spot include Quest for Ancient Secrets and Guile . These cards are either not searchable in our deck (via Trinket Mage), or do not do enough to keep us from milling ourselves. Guile will prevent us from milling ourselves normally, but it does not win us the game when an opponent has an Eldrazi titan or draw 2+ effect. Quest seems good, but there is a small chance that you could shuffle everything in only to have the Quest be one of the last five cards in the deck. Let's not take that chance ;)

This combo is pretty straightforward if we have it in the opening hand. (T2) Play Vedalken Mastermind, (T3) Play Stasis and wait (hope for no removal or tapped out opponents). At the end of your last opponent's turn, activate the Mastermind's ability and return Stasis to hand. Continue indefinitely. Be sure to hold up cheap countermagic as this combo is a high-priority target against almost every deck. It may even be waiting until T3 or T4 to start the combo.

This combo provides infinite blue mana if you have 6 or more Islands on the battlefield.

This combo provides infinite untaps of all permanents. It works as follows:

  1. You start with six untapped lands, four untapped Wizards (one of which is Sigil Tracer), and you proceed to cast Turnabout. You now have two untapped lands and four untapped Wizards and the spell Turnabout on top of the stack. (Do note that the spell isn't targeting anything. The choice of what to untap is made on resolution.)
  2. You activate Sigil Tracer's ability, tapping the remaining two lands and two wizards. When the ability resolves, it creates a copy of Turnabout above the original, and we still have two untapped wizards.
  3. Now we let the copy of Turnabout resolve, choosing to untap the six lands. We now have still a Turnabout on the stack, six untapped lands and two untapped wizards.
  4. We activate Sigil Tracer again. Turnabout copy is created on the stack, we have four untapped lands, and all wizards are tapped.
  5. We let the Turnabout copy resolve, untapping the wizards. Now we have four untapped lands and four untapped wizards (and still the original Turnabout on the stack).
  6. We can now activate Sigil Tracer's ability twice, choosing once lands and once creatures when the copies resolve. This leaves us with six untapped lands and four untapped wizards (and the original Turnabout on the stack).
  7. Now we can draw two mana into the pool and go back to step 5. as often as we like.
