The deck is looking to ramp (using Azusa) into expensive creatures that either present an immediate threat to the opponent or create card advantage for you. Primal Surge is in the deck, because it is a cool card, and can also lead to a win out of nowhere. Due to the inclusion of Primal Surge, the deck contains very few instants/sorceries. However, there are a couple of them aside from Primal Surge, both of which feel worth the risk of blanking on Primal Surge.

Something I have really tried to do with the deck is ensure it does not run out of steam. For this reason, there are a good number of card draw effects.
