Bad Weather (Top4 @FNM 8/15)

Standard Burn FNM UR (Izzet)

GureiSeion

Sideboard

Different enough from its predecessor to merit a new page, this thing is all long game. Realized I kind of have a thing for Steam Augury, so I moved from one unhealthy card to two others.

Objective: Controlled defensive burn, until planeswalker incremental advantage or spare bursts of 4-5 damage off the opponent.

Basic Breakdown:

  • Chandra, Pyromaster ~ Free "draws" off the top when not in post-sideboard control mode, and the third point of damage needed to kill some of the things around there. And heaven forbid she ultimates into Riddle of Lightning. Fun trick: Turn a critter, Burn another. Let Chandra clean up the Weird.
  • Counterflux ~ A bit mana specific, but a rather hard "no."
  • Hammer of Purphoros ~ With a max cmc of five in the deck, there are many times where I don't need the excess land with all the drawing going on. Hammertime Golems are not to be underestimated.
  • Izzet Charm ~ Probably my nonrare MVP for Ravnica Block. Catches planeswalkers off guard on the stack, and fries most of the critters that aggro throws at me. I've yet to use the last ability for another Keranos trigger.
  • Jace, Architect of Thought ~ Card draw, mostly. His +1 has stall use, and if I can pop the ult, I've probably got the game in the bag anyway.
  • Keranos, God of Storms ~ My inevitability. Helps get to gas faster or lends a free Lightning Bolt while at the same time being hard to remove from the picture. He'll squeeze a win out if I'm forced to be tight with everything else. If he's a creature, something's horribly wrong on the opposing side of the field.
  • Magma Jet ~ Trading off a third damage for a better draw seems alright, especially with a few cards in the deck that care about what's directly on top.
  • Turn / Burn ~ Big guy killer, primarily, and I won't hesitate to Shock an aggressive critter if need be.
  • Ral Zarek ~ Usually a burn spell that requires my opponent to sacrifice some offense or 1-for-1 to keep from being more. If he sticks, then he's a long-term damage source. The ultimate rarely goes off, but when it does, I usually win from concession alone. Fun Trick: When on the offensive, Hammer of Purphoros can be +1'd for a second use. 6 power hastiness anyone?
  • Riddle of Lightning ~ End of Opponent's Turn troublemaker. Roughly a third of the deck registers as 4-5 damage with this thing, so it hits fairly hard while setting up a decent draw for me. And if it doesn't, well, the time of casting usually mitigates the "loss."
  • Shrapnel Blast ~ Yes, I'm only running eight artifacts in here. No, I don't blow this thing the first chance I can cast it. Unless I really need it now, it's a finisher, so all the deck's scrying can do its work in the meantime. Also, always fun when an opponent has five less life than they think they've got.
  • Prophetic Prism ~ Shrapnel bait that replaces itself. Also fixes up the mana base that Citadels and bad draw can ruffle up, but I wouldn't rely on that here.

Sideboard: Mostly against aggro, with a bit of anti-control tossed in. Can't really take our time against a wave of little ones, so the first things out is usually the shrapnel package. Ratchet Bomb has the word "Mistcutter" painted on it.

Note: This thing is weak to the higher-toughness creatures run in the format, so that is an accepted risk of the deck. One should take care to play around them, counter-wise, or be prepared to 2-for-1 that Courser of Kruphix. Turn / Burn can only do so much.

Initial run of the deck. Tossed together a loose list of cards while I was at work and assembled it about a half hour before FNM started. It's good to have time for cutting things down to 60 and tossing together a half-ass sideboard.

  • Round 1 vs UR PyroSnipe (2-0)
Gets out Guttersnipe or Young Pyromancer to do the killing while trying to counter or burn off threats. Spellheart Chimera for a late game finisher.
    • Game 1 ~ Longer game, with me taking out his threats before they could do much. Shrapnel and Lightning did the brunt of the work, Chandra ult'd for the rest.
    • Game 2 ~ Burn fight! Ended up with me at 2 life, smacking him with two Golems and using a Riddle of Lightning to take out half his life in one go.
  • Round 2 vs GR TitanRamp (2-0)
Ramps up to six to cast Soul of Zendikar, Soul of New Phyrexia, Scuttling Doom Engine, or Garruk, Caller of Beasts. Apply directly to opponent's forehead.
    • Game 1 ~ He mulliganed to five and had trouble hitting six mana. By the time he had enough, I was able to deal with the threats and Chandra was able to live the dream, ultimating into Riddle of Lightning.
    • Game 2 ~ Burned off his mana dorks to keep him from ramping and countered two Polukranos, World Eater while getting Ral on the board. By the time he hit six, I was able to Cyclonic Rift his setup and clear the board for Ral's ultimate. With three free turns, Hammer went to work and he was dead with two to spare.
  • Round 3 vs nonRed Goodstuff (2-0)
Grindy deck. Runs Courser of Kruphix to get the lands out; Cyclonic Rift, Dissolve, and Hero's Downfall to stall, then slowly win with Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, Kiora, the Crashing Wavefoil, and Jace, Architect of Thought. White's only in it for Sphinx's Revelation.
    • Game 1 ~ A testament to how slow the games were, the first major play was his Courser, which got taken down with double Turn / Burn. Tossed around some counters, only playing my threats when his land was tapped, or I was in danger of hand overflow. He got out Reaper of the Wilds which I had to three-for-one if you include the Blast cost. My 'walkers stuck, so after a few turns of nothing he looked at the clock and conceded.
    • Game 2 ~ Here's where Ashiok showed up. I had to go full blast burn mode, bringing him down to 4 before a desperation revelation upped him to seven. No counters in sight though, so a Riddle smacked for 5, and two burn spells (one to respond to counter / Revelations) finished him off.
    • After the match, he admitted that the Shrapnel Blast had thrown him off, and that he was expecting the deck to be an Ensoul Artifact / Scuttling Doom Engine etc etc build that's been running around here. Unintentional Next Level, I guess.
  • Round 4 vs ??? (Intentional Draw)
    • A much needed refuel period. Got food, and some EDH among friends. :D
  • Top 8 vs nonRed Goodstuff (2-1)
    Yep, that one again
    • Game 1 ~ Surprise was gone, but what I lost in there I gained in collectedness. My opponent was unhappy to face me again, and the salt was showing. I don't remember this one clearly, but by the looks of the life total slip, I ran a six-hander and at some point, he conceeded at 12 life with a Chandra ready to blow.
    • Game 2 ~ Quite a grinder. Got through two Kioras, a Jace, and an Ashiok before a third Kiora could ultimate. Concession on my part to speed things up.
    • Game 3 ~ His turn for a six-lander. Played tight here, and did what I could to keep him off his early mana fixing. Keranos was the MVP here, scoring hits in between opposing Rifts. Eventually it came down to a Sphinx's Revelation for nine, which a (some turns earlier) previously revealed Izzet Charm stoped. He packed his things up and stormed off in clear concession.
    • For what it's worth, the next day he apologized on Facebook for his behavior.
  • Top 4 vs monoRed Aggro (0-2)
The guy hadn't played in a while, so he didn't want to split. -snaps fingers-
    • Game 1 ~ He slaps down Ash Zealot, next turn I misplay a Magma Jet midswing, watching it get bloodrushedin response with Rubblebelt Maaka. He finishes his turn with Burning-Tree Emissary --> Burning-Tree Emissary --> Rakdos Cackler. I look at my hand, do a little math in my head, and quickly concede.
    • Game 2 ~ After sideboarding in eleven cards, I had a decent hand with Anger of the Gods and the need for one more red source. It came admirably, and I was able to stall for a while. No counterspells showed up, but two Jaces were poorly drawn, as I had only one blue source all game; the Citadels finally had charged their toll as land drops two and three. Ended up dead to Prophetic Flamespeaker and Boros Reckoner. Ah well.

Hey, can't argue with an overall performance like that. Just remember to fry things at the beginning of combat, at least until rotation, alright kiddies?
