I can not see the point to this deck... I won 3-0 (with no discussion, I mean 19-0,20-0,18-0) with my deck Mardu Goblin Engineering...

Could be bad luck but...

1) I don't understand Singing Bell Strike just looks bad here especially with all the permanent removal black has

2) 22 lands looks way too low! You have 0 mana dorks and are looking to get to 5+ mana really early. I would think something more like 25 or 26 would be appropriate. I also think you are light on black sources to cast Hero's Downfall which is your only non-conditional hard removal. Or even enough green mana to consistently cast Sultai Charm. Reid Duke had a solid Article yesterday on building a good mana base, you should read it.

3) How do you not get run over instantly versus anything with a reasonable creature curve? Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix would help here on two axis and Hornet Nest could be solid vs ground based agro.

3) your have 5 copies of card disadvantage cards in Void Snare and Voyage's End, I am not sure that Dictate of Kruphix is your best card draw choice here, or that your deck really takes advantage of it, especially versus agro decks, which you are already weak against and that will just love the extra gas you are giving them.

4) You have too many different win-cons and not enough ways to survive to use them. Ashiok will get murdered without protection, pearl lake ancient is too slow without first locking down and or whipping the board. I would focus on the Villainous Wealth route, you can get away with only a two of if you added more ways to dig through your library like Dig Through Time. You also might want to consider Hornet Queen and See the Unwritten it'd be a somewhat different archetype but not too different.

TheParadox - I will consider Doomwake Giant, but i am not sure if he fits in, I will definitely play around with the idea to see if it is effective

Paulsicle - I will take those cards you mentioned into consideration, I will definitely play around with that Commune with the Gods idea to see if it works. I could remove Taigam's Scheming as essestially that is what it is doing.

diateone - I dont think it was bad luck, your deck probably did whoop mine

2 things. Firstly this deck is going to struggle against Aggro decks, Its one of the archetypes I need help with. It is more suited vs midrange decks and I want to get the edge on other control decks out there too. Secondly, This is a standard format deck, your deck uses alot of cards outside of this format, a bit unfair lol. But if you have any suggestions to help this deck more formidable against your deck I would love to hear it!

MangoPunch - thanks for your criticism, all will be taken into account.

1) Singing Bell Strike is going to be removed, It is a great card opening hand, but it gets worst and worst the longer the game goes.

2) 80% of my land cards can find a blue mana source, 50% of my land cards can find a black mana source. And thats not including Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth which would make it 100% ;) . 40% of land cards can find a green mana source, I haven't found it to be a problem as of yet, but perhaps the more I play it I might find it to become a problem (The deck has been casually played with mates and play tested against other decks online, so my results may differ in the real world) (I am looking to take this to the next FNM) I might try to increase the lands to 24-26. (Drawing cards through Dictate of Kruphix assists with the low land count too) Thanks for posting that article, I will have to give it a read.

3) Again, play testing with mates, I have not come across this problem. But Generally, Bounce spells & counter spells does the job! it ruins the tempo of their game. My deck is Majority Blue, So I might add in Wall of Frost or other blue walls instead to help solve that.

3) Its hard to beat aggro decks, and Dictate of Kruphix doesnt help me either. Do you have any sideboard advice to help resist against Aggro?? Voyage's End works well, in slowing their aggro pace down, perhaps I might need some more hard removal instead.

4) Pearl Lake Ancient should be in the side board, My mistake, I am not even sure If I am going to keep it in the deck, I am considering a suggestion from Necrotech for Hydra Broodmaster as an alternative win condition to Villainous Wealth

Lastly, Do you guys have suggestions for my sideboard? I find I have trouble against aggro decks, I was thinking Bile Blight & Drown in Sorrow. And what do you guys think about Mistcutter Hydra against control matchups? Cannot be countered, has haste, protection from blue, can be pumped for a big amount.

I played around with a similar sultai control deck today in multiplayer. I used to hate villainous wealth now I rate it so hard. Have to say pearl lake ancient rocked in this will link my deck when I'm not in my phone as I made up my planned deck just now

Comfordor Right, a bit unfair hahaha. If you let me, I suggest you add some instants to destroy creatures o something like "every creature gets -1-1 or similar, you could slow down the game. You have enough black mana there. In addition, something like Vraska the Unseen (I don't know about her legality) could make your day...

Np! Deck looks fun if not super consistent. Versus Argo: Hornet Nest, Courser of Kruphix, Bile Blight, Drown in Sorrow

Why not get into some trouble with Voyaging Satyr or Kiora's Follower and Market Festival or Verdant Haven

Comfordor says... #10

What do I take out for those cards though? its tough decisions if I do that!

Plus banking mana with Kruphix, God of Horizons & Dictate of Karametra is enough mana ramping, adding those cards would be overkil, plus it would weaken my control side.

Thanks for the suggestions!

After some thought, looking at the early blocking to mid-game usefulness... AND increasing your ability to ramp much sooner. (Big elephant in the room)

Sylvan Caryatid

Kiora's Follower is a solid choice because to make tons of mana it untaps nykthos

I was wondering how this deck is? I go against a Mardu Aggro deck and he uses goblin rabblemaster with sarkon and stormbreath dragon and he takes me out very quick so im wondering how this deck is against aggro decks and mid range decks?

December 2, 2014 12:44 a.m.

Comfordor says... #14

Thanks for your comment Dizangel! I have not tested this deck in standard format as of yet, just with mates and play testing online. I am shy of a few cards but should have them by the end of the week.

I would use black removal (Hero's Downfall, Murderous Cut, Sultai Charm) against Stormbreath Dragon. I would use black removal and also Bile Blight against Goblin Rabblemaster. I would use Hero's Downfall or Voyage's End to bounce Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker when he becomes a dragon. I would also side in Silence the Believers against sarkhan.

Mid range decks are an easy matchup. It is easy to Remove/Bounce/Counter creatures. So I can control the board until Villainous Wealth is ready to go then push for the win.

Aggro is a tougher matchup. same strategy, but harder to control the board. I would side in Bile Blight, Drown in Sorrow & Hydra Broodmaster in against that to help.

But Generally If I can stay alive long enough to gain control of board state. then I have won the game.

What about Sylvan Caryatid for nice early ramp and a tough to remove buffer against early aggro ?

Neat deck! The only thing I'd question is the Dictate of Karametra + Dictate of Kruphix combo. Giving your opponent extra cards and extra mana seems too much. Instead of being overloaded with cards, or having tons of mana and nothing to spend it on, they will get lots of cards and the mana to play them. Obviously you want both extra mana and extra cards. Keep the Dictate of Karametra. Then given your large instant collection, I'd recommend Dig through Time. Or if you want to be thematic, Treasure Cruise.

Either I've been overcome with Hysterical Blindness, or Waste Not isn't in the deck.

Did you take it out? You really sold it to me!

December 4, 2014 3:27 p.m.

CoDbOmAsTeR says... #19

Fragbasket Why would he have Waste Not in this deck, the only reason they would is if the Dictate of Kruphix is causing it and that doesn't happen often, Waste Not is not functional at all in this deck.

December 4, 2014 7:52 p.m.

Comfordor says... #20

Waste Not is a fun card to play, it is not too practical/consistent though. So to make the deck more competitive I have taken it out. But I will chuck it back in from time to time in casual bouts & whenever I feel silly.

jubale - I have thought about that, now Dictate of Karametra will generally be flashed in the turn before Villainous Wealth is cast. Also me having 7+ cards in my hand, I would usually have an answer in my hand for whatever they play.

I am considering other forms of card draw, but at the moment I want to play how it is to get a feel & experiment with it. If this works then I'll stick with it, if it becomes a nightmare then I'll change it over.

23 lands is incredibly low for a control deck, you can't afford to miss land drops in this format - 25-26 is the sweet spot.

Prophet of Kruphix doesn't really serve a purpose in this deck as you only play 7 creatures and he turns on all of your opponent's otherwise dead removal spells.

Dig Through Time is really needed, without some form of good draw you're gonna lose a lot of games simply to not drawing a win condition in time. Dictate of Kruphix is really bad in a control deck, you don't want to give your opponent extra cards when you're depending on 1for1'ing them.

Murderous Cut is a lot worse without the full 4 fetchlands, I'd drop a copy or two until you get the rest of the fetches, and even then, I wouldn't play more than 2 (Dig is more important).

Voyage's End is really weak, that could be a good cut to make room for Dig Through Time.

Right now, aside from Negate and Dissolve, you have 0 game against control. Mistcutter Hydra just doesn't cut it in this meta. Thoughtseize and Pearl Lake Ancient will go a long way towards shoring up that weak matchup.

CoDbOmAsTeR - because he spent a large amount of time in the OP describing how he was going to combo off with Waste Not. Thanks for asking.

Comfordor - Had a feeling that was the case! I loved your writing style and felt really...invested...in your deck description :P

I took out 1 Dictate of Karametra and 2 Voyage's End to make room for 3 Thoughtsieze. Ran only 2 Kruphix, God of Horizons and put some more control in. I found that helped me be a little more durable :)

December 22, 2014 2:45 p.m.

Are you going to update this for Fate Reforged? I ran something like this for a while and as soon as I saw frontier siege I immediately thought of Kruphix.
