This is a home brew from Battle for Zendikar. The Awaken mechanic is the one that really spoke to me when I first looked at this set after the obvious allies so here is my take on Awaken Control!
Deck Strategy
The strategy of the deck, as some might guess, is to play awaken cards. In the Bant colours, these cards are often based around temporary removal (see
Roil Spout
and
Clutch of Currents
) and countering (see Scatter to the Winds). There are also some cool board wipes that synergise really well with this creature-land thing we have going with Planar Outburst and Displacement Wave. One weakness in the deck is the huge amount of sorcery speed everything.
Key Cards
Clutch of Currents
- This little card doesn't seem like much but it is our early game removal. and actually one of our earliest awaken cards at only 5 mana. It's very good for disrupting early and also produces an ok body.
Roil Spout
- is one of the most disruptive cards in the deck, and it's awaken cost is only one higher than
Clutch of Currents
while making a slightly bigger body. This is the closest the deck gets to spot removal.
Planar Outburst - Wipes their board, leaves ours largely intact. 'Nuff said.
Halimar Tidecaller - A thoroughly unassuming 3-mana 2/3 but if you can land this, all of a sudden your lands creatures start flying. And that's not even the best bit! We can get back our previously used Awaken cards!
Displacement Wave - One sided bounce. 'Nuff said (again).
Planeswalkers
The choices of planeswalkers are kind of odd and is a little bit based on what I own. I was running Kiora, Master of the Depths but took her out.Gideon, Ally of Zendikar - He makes dudes! he becomes a dude! He is our other planeswalker's insurance policy.
Nissa, Vastwood Seer
- This deck needs lands and with Nissa going to grab a forest when she arrives, we're feeling pretty good about that. Also her ultimate makes more land creatures! 6 of them!
Narset Transcendent - Her +1 is fine as it'll hopefully grab one of our many awaken spells. Her -2 however is much more appealing. We already pay over the odds for awaken spells, so being able to get the effect twice is great! Sadly we only get the awaken on the first casting, not the rebound.
