Bant Delver
A Horror-endous Homebrew!
Why Bant?
Ever since the dawn of the Siege Rhino until now Delver has been quite unfavored. Often times delver ends up in awkward scenarios and is very weak against burn so much so that Grixis Delver strategies were unplayable until the printings of Tasigur, the Golden Fang and crew, but even then Delver has been struggling in the recent meta. Why?
Well that's a hard question to answer because there exist many reasons why.Ok. Now what.
Well heres where I cheat and go back to the last question, it is my personal belief that burn is delvers no. 1 enemy in the format and what is really keeping it from rebounding.So. Why Bant again?
Well when we take out our Lightning Bolts, Young Pyromancers, Tasigur, the Golden Fangs, Terminate, etc,... we are with a lot of room but also a lot of roles needed to be played. Bant allows us to build more of toolbox of sorts and by doing so we completely change the goal of delver in this deck. We are no longer a tempo deck which tries to answer cards 1-for-1 and sit around protecting a single creature all game but rather a deck which has the option to present must answer threats and answer for some of the most prevalent decks in the format. The Cast!
Delver of Secrets
- A strong one-mana threat which demands a answer. Already proved itself a strong force in several formats.
Thing in the Ice
- This new toy from SOI was initially hyped up with crazy speculation and fell short. But it being able to survive Lightning Bolt and its bounce ability being very relevant in match-ups like elves and attrition. The bounce in our deck serves as double edged sword with our deck having built in benefits. A must answer threat deserving of removal, the current mistake in my opinion is that too many decks are trying to place him as a 4 of- I think a 2 of is more than fair.
Spellskite- A nice way to play protect the queen with our Thing in the Ice
or Delver of Secrets
. Also a nice body that functions well in blocks. Also its horror type being relevant with Thing in the Ice
is nice
Qasali Pridemage- Here's where we start to see our 'toolbox' options come into play. It ability helps destroy bogles, affinity, bloodmoon, chalice, vial, you name it. Exalted ability helps play to our protect the queen game style.
Kitchen Finks- One of the real all-stars of the deck, basically two for ones burn in almost all scenarios helping our matchup. Another nice 'toolbox' to grab in a pinch in when damage racing becomes relevant. Also when it is bounced by Thing in the Ice
or Whelming Wave the extra triggers can put a game from neck and neck to out of reach for many decks.
Monastery Mentor- Another one of our 'toolbox' cards usually our alternate win-con in late game. Its toolbox effect acts as mainly a way to pump out chump blockers when behind.
Siege Rhino- Woah- Hold up- I thought you said Bant?
Why yes I did and it is but we splash black for a powerful and rather peculiar sideboard options. But main board it serves as a way to cast our single copy of Siege Rhino which is often a way paired with a bounce spell or Thing in the Ice
to hose burn and get reach damage against decks like Latern Control.
Lightning and SFX Crew!
Gitaxian Probe- Let me take a
Peek
at that for 2 life is pretty good when you need to flip Thing in the Ice
fast or get some board presence with Monastery Mentor
