Drop or move Dromoka Command to SB. Add a third Remand as it's gotten better in the format. Mana leak is pretty dead but can still be relevant as 2 of. I'm missing the interaction with Skite and resto?

Remand seems good as this deck can play more tempo.

If I'm thinking right: Redirect removal to skite (pay life or mana) and blink skite with resto to have the removal fizzle, keeping skite still alive.

btreutherSo far in my very limited incursion into bant I have been very surprised by Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip. I ran him as a full 4 of, and he provided extreme value. In conjuction with snapcaster, Tarmogoyfand Scavenging Ooze which all like graveyard I ended up running Thought Scour over serum

Also Geist of Saint Traft is a good card to look into as a more midrange option

Thanks VanillaBean_MTG - I'm so mixed on Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip. No doubt its a great card, just don't know what I'd cut for him.

Thought Scour does seem good, and works with snappy, goyf, and scooze. I chose Serum Visions because I can use it to dig and it helps goyf get bigger, earlier...perhaps to even help him dodge an early bolt. On second thought, perhaps Thought Scour might do a similar thing. Worth testing. I also feel like I'd be terribly confused on whether I'd discard or have my opponent discard, lol.

Pros/Cons for Thought Scour to replace Serum Visions?

February 5, 2016 2:23 p.m.
  1. thought scour can troll decks that keep something no top. 2nd grows tarmogoyf, scooze, helps jace vryns prodigy and ojutai's command.
  2. serum visions:Digs deeper into the deck. Helps fix bad draws (unlike thought scour). Better in late game ( because thought scour in late game probably doesn't get additional types for goyf, and probably will be too late to flip jace. ) Honestly thought scour worked really well for me!

thought scour helps when opponent is playing eldrazi, Conduit of Ruin

I can tell you from experience that Scavenging Ooze with 4 green sources total is way too greedy when you combine it with Cryptic Command. You need to definitely cut the Ooze.

Yeah...The inclusion of Scavenging Ooze certainly does pull the build in a different direction. Maybe too cute. If I cut it, probably would shift the mana base slightly, maybe swapping in more land hate, or another UW source to make my Cryptic Commands and Supreme Verdicts a bit easier to cast.

Any thoughts on what to replace it with?

Phantasmal Image seems like an interesting inclusions as a 1-of. With two mana cost, it would become a target for Ojutai's Command.

Some sideboard cards to consider, Natural State instead of Disenchant. Rule of Law, and Ethersworn Canonist are great against Ad Nauseum, and Storm. Maindeck Tireless Tracker is great and you run a lot of fetchlands, so there is real value there.

Just some thoughts. But overall sweet deck. +1

Thanks bostonsportsfan86. I do like the idea of Natural State.

Anyone have any success playing Disrupting Shoal?

I fucking love this! Reminds me a lot of my modern control deck, you should check it out. What's a permanent? [Modern Esper Dragons]

Don't play natural state. Nature's Claim is strictly better.

Plus one from me for sure.

Thanks Kai-Erik! I +1 yours before and commented on it. Still think you need to run the full 4 Esper Charms - that card is nuts. :)

DrFunk27 - I think some numbers of Nature's Claim is better than Naturalize, Disenchant, and Natural State. I'm going to test Kataki, War's Wage too. Part of me wants to play Fracturing Gust, but hella-expensive.

Oh man I didn't even notice that was you btreuther! Thanks again for the advice, I might actually run the full set, I'm playing around with it in the meta at my local shops right now and the current list is averaging 3-1

Anyone have strong opinions of putting in 4 Noble Hierarchs? Would likely take out 2 lands and the Supreme Verdict.

July 4, 2016 1:19 a.m.

DrFunk27 says... #19

Nobles aren't replacements for lands. You don't want less than 24 in this type of deck. I would be OK with subbing 2 nobles for 1 verdict and 1 land. That would work ok.

July 4, 2016 1:23 a.m.

btreuther says... #20

Seems reasonable, and makes sense. I keep thinking of this option with hierarch because mana acceleration and the buff seems nice, but I've also been doing just fine without it.

Generally, I'm thinking Supreme Verdict might be better as another d-sphere or something. In my testing, I've never used it, and there is only one time in maybe dozens of games where I've wanted it.

What do you think about 1 or 2 sideboard Spell Quellers for those "Can't be countered" cards? It could be useful against slower U/W or Esper decks to avoid their Supreme Verdicts or against G/B for Abrupt Decay etc.

Kiivuhl says... #22

Scavenging Ooze instead of finks in side?

And what do you think about Wharf Infiltrator (1/1 isn't cool and I am not sure about this card in your midrange deck, but looting is always ok for me) or new Tamiyo?

And little question - is Serum Visions that really good for your deck?

July 21, 2016 8:20 a.m.

btreuther says... #23

skoobysnackz - Seems good, and relevant to save our things. I like the flash three drop, maybe in place of finks. Worth testing, because it feels so bad to get Abrupt Decayed. I'd like it even better if it was a 2/4, because bolt. But then it would be probably OP.

Kiivuhl - seems reasonable. Scooze had me warp the base so much, and I've basically opted to run Cryptic Command. Out of the SB could be ok, but only have 5 green sources. The Ghost Quarter could be replaced with another green source.

I am excited about Tamiyo, Field Researcher, actually. She will most certainly get a look in this deck. I think she could be really good. I play almost exclusively on MTGO, so I'll have to wait a bit to get her. Is she suited for control builds, or more aggressive creature-based decks? Can she be utilized effectively in either? Maybe.

So yeah, Serum Visions. It's a good question. I'm playing it for a few reasons:1). It's a one drop play other than Spell Snare that gets a card and lets me control my next draw. Although this is a control deck, I've liked to be a bit more proactive with this build. You'll see some some numbers of Serum Visions in other control build.2). It's a sorcery and it grows Tarmogoyf early. Of course, there is a drawback to it being a sorcery, too.

The only other route I've thought about is replacing the 4 Serum Visions with 2/2 split of either Anticipate/Think Twice and counterspells.

Like the deck a lot! I myself am playing Bant Control in modern, though a bit different in style.

I too was thinking Spell Queller might be nice to add, but i like it more in the sideboard. If i had the money, there would be Goyfs, for now my preferred targets for Ojutai's Command are Meddling Mage, Snapcaster Mage and Wall of Omens =)

After 2 month - I understood reason, why vision is here instead of... Think twice for example. But now are new things :)

I am not a realny big fan of Mystic Gate (I will never play this card anymore, after i get 2x in first hand with ghost quarter - lost both games bcs I kept this), especially in mana base like this. It just does not appeal to me. Looks like not enough shocklands... Maybe cut 1 plains, Mystic Gate and/or 1 fetch for fountain (for sure one more) and pool or Garden?

Now some about Selfless Spirit - 1/2 is nice/fine, but 3 looks terrible... It is "sweet card" in creature based.dec, but in Control is just more like "sweat card", especially topdeck.

Snap with that lot of other creatures looks... Meh. Think 2 could be enough.

1/2 Cryptic command? Its like a timewalk or just gives "unblockable" for all goyfs (tapping crits) + couterspell.

And last thing - no gravehate in side?
