~ Baral, Chief of Compliance ~

This deck is a revamp of my old Talrand, Sky Drakoneer EDH deck. I disliked to play that EDH because it was too much reliant on its commander, which also costed too much mana.

Also, I wanted to play less low-cost instants/sorceries for more blue bombs. So, I decided to switch to another blue commander that would allow me that kind of deck.

I had chosen Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  . He is fast (2 manas only), not threatening, and polyvalent.

In 2020, Baby Jace retired and Baral, Chief of Compliance took the lead.

Strategy

Use diplomacy: Be polite. Do not counter everything, only threats to our important pieces. Same goes for our removal spells. Try to over-advantage your opponents by countering their card-advantage engines.
E.g.: It is not important to keep Baral alive, better to hold that counter spell for a real threat than against a removal targeting our commander. Moreover, Baral is very cheap to re-cast, and the deck can run without him.

Play Baral as soon as possible: He's a manadork in the command zone.

Capture or copy big creatures, defend with them, or attack the most powerful player to help the others.

Key Strategies

• Plan A: Cast Enter the Infinite . You can do it with Omniscience , Spelltwine (if discarded) or by reaching infinite mana with the combo Palinchron + High Tide | Extraplanar Lens . Then drop Thassa's Oracle or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries to win the game (if you don't have infinite mana, the deck contains two moxes for casting oracle).

• Plan B: Cast Blue Sun's Zenith (BSZ) with infinite mana to kill a player, or draw all your library and win with Oracle/Jace.

• Plan C: Go for the Isochron Scepter + Mystical Tutor + Nexus of Fate combo (infinite turns).

• Plan D: Beatdown. Possible with all our steal effects: Bribery , Gilded Drake , Vedalken Shackles , Treachery .

Why Palinchron & High Tide?

Why am I playing the High Tide + Palinchron combo?

• Palinchron is the quintessence of a controlling creature. It's a "free" big body 4/5 creature with an evasion ability (Flying) and a protective ability (2UU: back to hand). I really enjoy it because it's free.

• High Tide is an excellent ramp card, much like Dark Ritual . Ramping is so difficult in mono-blue decks except if you can($)/want to rely on artifact manarocks, so this card can be well appreciated for an early Consecrated Sphinx.

• Both cards together can generate infinite mana. You can win the game this way with spells like Blue Sun's Zenith and Enter the Infinite .

Extra

• Palinchron may also generate infinite mana with Extraplanar Lens .

• Palinchron comboes also with Phantasmal Image . Play Palinchron, untap lands, tap for 7 manas, play Image as Palinchron, untap lands, return Image to hand using the copied ability, 1 mana left, repeat, win.

2017-09-05: C17 updates

No new interesting cards or mechanics from the Commander 2017 set.
But few changes have been made:

+ Baral, Chief of Compliance , - Chain of Vapor : Chain of Vapor fell short too many times in my deck filled with lot of stealing and copying effects. Baral came back because I really love its mana cost reduction.

+ Phyrexian Metamorph , - Stroke of Genius : This is a test, as I feel Stroke of Genius is my weakest draw option and Phyrexian Metamorph an excellent Clone for 3 manas.

+ AEtherspouts , - Omniscience /- Polymorphist's Jest : AEtherspouts took precedence over Polymorphist's Jest as a better efficient attack deterrent. Polymorphist's Jest was already removed from the deck long ago in place of Omniscience, but that big enchantment didn't make the cut. Early game and mid game, I always trashed it to Jace with no way to recur it.

+ Expropriate , - Frantic Search : How god, this spell is so gorgeous! I replaced Frantic Search which was a nice spell but was card disadvantage. Frantic Search is more useful in combo-oriented decks. (Yes I know, I play combo, but it isn't the main game plan.)

+ Force of Will , - Thwart : deck upgrade.

2016-10-10: KLD updates

+ Torrential Gearhulk , - Rhystic Study : Rhystic Study was one of my weakest card. It is not a reliable card-draw (I used it for this purpose). It slows opponents but doesn't work well with Helm of Awakening . The new blue Gearhulk takes its place.
