Battle Box Update #2!

The decks in this update function exactly the same as the core decks, and are meant to be played all together. Smash any two decks together, add the set of extra cards, and there's your deck for the game!

For my first big expansion of the Battle Box, rather than immediately dive into all 10 guilds at once, I decided to start at a manageable goal and pick 5 of my favorite color combinations to build around. As you can see, blue is my favorite color in magic, so I chose all of the blue-inclusive guilds. Rakdos was added as the fifth deck because Vial Smasher is a really cool card and there are some fun shenanigans to be had in that guild.

The sixth deck, led by The Prismatic Piper, is an idea that I'm especially proud of. I'm a huge fan of all of Seb McKinnon's artwork, and when I obtained a foil-etched copy I knew I had to make him into a deck somehow. Well, the idea I came up with is a 5-color, colorless only deck! Special warning! This deck is not strictly Commander-Legal and will require table permission if you want to play it! The deck makes use of the Devoid mechanic from the BFZ block to ensure that every card in it is colorless per the actual rules of MTG, but in EDH color pips count toward color-identity, making the deck technically 5-color and colorless all at once: A perfect fit for The Prismatic Piper! Now the part that is tricky, is that you have to use the Piper as a 5C commander, when his rules text technically only allows one color selection. That's the part that makes it not strictly EDH-legal and requires table permission. Thus far, once I've explained the idea no one has had a problem with it, which has been cool to see people bend some rules in the spirit of fun and flavor.

If you read the primer for the core Battle Box decks, you know I designed each deck using generically powerful cards that I enjoy and want to play, and that the decks tend toward being a mix of control/combo. I took a similar deckbuilding approach with these decks, but for additional flavor I drew some inspiration for each guild from previous decks I have had (or still have) using combos in those colors. The combos for the new decks are as follows:

5C Devoid: Brood Monitor + Eldrazi Displacer + Flayer Drone - Infinite ETBs and damage

Azorius: Archaeomancer + Brago, King Eternal + Time Warp - Infinite turns

Dimir: Thopter Assembly + Time Sieve - Infinite turns

Izzet: Dualcaster Mage + Ghostly Flicker + Impact Tremors - Infinite ETBs/mana/damage

Rakdos: Magar of the Magic Strings + Savage Beating - Infinite untaps + combat steps

Simic: Bloom Tender + Capsize + Pemmin's Aura - Infinite mana + bounce all permanents forever

There's a bit of redundancy built into each deck to support the combos, with backup pieces being available for most combo cards. In addition, some of the decks have sub-combos that either happened to interact well with the theme, or have one of their pieces already in the main combo. For instance, in Izzet, Naru Meha, Master Wizard also combos with Ghostly Flicker.

If you look at the lists for the core decks and the decks from the new update, you'll notice that there are no duplicate cards in any list. I wanted to make sure that each deck feels unique and that I wasn't worrying about accidentally having two copies of a card in any combined deck.

For deck selection, I'm using the website random.org to randomly choose which decks I'm playing in each game.
