Baylens Bnuuys AKA Bunny Storm: Primer WIP

Hare Apparent is a fun new little guy I wanted to build around. I thought I was making a funny Bunny deck. Turns out Hare + Baylen enables creature storm like Animar without trying. So what happens if we lean into it? Let's find out!

Disclaimer: The Deck and Primer are an early work in progress and I welcome input.

About the Deck

I spent a lot of time looking at legendaries and color pairings for this deck. I started Selesnya helmed by Cadira, Caller of the Small. I ended up split between either Bant with Chulane, Teller of Tales or Naya with Baylen, the Haymaker. The trade off is losing Chulane's aggressive draw power for Baylen's faster mana generation and a more aggressive wincon in red ping effects. Also bunny commander is legitimately good, cute, and thematic. 3 wins!

  • You like creature based decks.
  • You think a Relentless Rats style creature is cool.
  • You like assembling an engine.
  • You like piloting a storm deck with many emerging lines of play.
  • You like seeing every available surface buried under your ever expanding and strong bunny lineage.

  • You don't like strategies weak to sweepers.
  • You hate rabbits.
  • You don't like game plans moderately dependent on the commander.
  • You don't like Family Guy.
  • You don't want to cast a 2cmc rabbit and watch Purphoros incinerate your opponents for 20 damage.

The Game Plan

Audio warning: Here is a link to a Youtube Video better describing the deck strategy. Mentally this is where you need to be to pilot the deck.

The general Plan is:

Creature storm

Aluren is clearly the strongest cost reducer in the deck and let's us break Baylen, the Haymaker completely. In order to storm you need Baylen, the Haymaker + enough Hare Apparent for your tokens to go mana and card draw positive. (In a vacuum I'm reaching this around the 4th Hare) The most efficient win condition I've found so far is damage from creatures entering through Agate Instigator or Purphoros, God of the Forge

The main win condition: Ping effects

With Baylen and a ping effect in play, it's realistic to cast multiple hares and win on the spot through sheer ping damage.

  • Purphoros, God of the Forge - The gold standard for a ping from creatures entering. Fetchable with our creature or enchantment tutor package.
  • Agate Instigator - Low cost and efficient. Fetchable with our creature tutor package.
  • Goblin Bombardment - Both removal and a win condition with a critical mass of bunnies. Also serves as a rattlesnake to deter board wipes.

    The backup plan: Alpha strike

There are several cards that enable Overrun wins as a backup.
  • Craterhoof Behemoth - Hoof needs no introduction.
  • Finale of Devastation - Late game can become and alpha strike paid for by tapping rabbits with Baylen's ability.

  • I've gone for an even spread of 2 ping effects and 2 overrun effects. I like having the combat backup, but you could go all in on more ping effects.

Honorable mentions: Everyone of these cards is a good option. There simply isn't enough room for all of them.
  • Impact Tremors - Low cost and efficient
  • Warleader's Call - A newer version of this effect worth playtesting. May be swapped for Agate Instigator which is more tutorable and fewer color pips.
  • Throne of the God-Pharaoh - I'd consider this a pseudo ping effect with our ability to tap tokens on demand
  • Shared Animosity - Hoof lite.

    Card Choice

    • Hare Apparent - "My ancestors are smiling at me, Imperials. Can you say the same?"
    • Valley Questcaller - In playtesting this rabbit is gas. The scry effect turns every Baylen draw into a mini Preordain.
      1. Cast a Hare apparent. Hare enters. Valley Questcaller Scry effect triggers.
      2. Scry first to set up your next draw. Scry away anything that isn't a Hare. (or combo piece)
      3. Use Baylen's ability to tap your new tokens and draw.
      4. Use Baylen's ability to tap the new tokens and cast a Hare.
      5. Repeat step one
Just 2 creatures and our commander. Shortest list ever lol.
    • Goblin Bombardment - Already described above under threats
    • Phyrexian Altar - Enables out creature storm incredibly. With a cost reducer and Baylen out, tokens can be tapped to make mana and then be sacrificed to make even more! It also lets us generate mana in an emergency to cast interaction or protection.
This deck is running lower than average card draw. My thought process here is that we are so low to the ground with 2cmc spells and Baylen is a draw engine in the command zone. Slimming down other areas is to ensure a critical mass of 30 Hares in the deck. Only time will tell if this strat pays off or if I'm flying too close to the sun.
    • Beast Whisperer - Draw on cast turbocharges our strategy. 4cmc creature is perfectly tutor able from tossing a Hare into Eldritch Evolution
    • Dawn of a New Age - consistent draw, scales with the number of tokens we make. Recurable with Hall of Heliod.
    • Esper Sentinel - Strong early game play to push ourselves ahead of the table. Reduced effectiveness into the late game.
    • Idol of Oblivion - Not the strongest effect. But VERY consistent. Replaceable if I find something stronger.
    • Skullclamp - Actually cracked. One of my favorite cards in all of Magic. An engine that can straight up draw your whole deck with Baylen and Hares.
    • Sylvan Library - One of greens strongest card advantage options.
    • one
    • two
    • three
    • four
    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Side board are cards I want to add. Maybe board are cards I'm considering.
    Cool cards:
    • Drumbellower - While it may not make the cut in this storm centric list. Drumbellower looks like an extremely powerful card for Baylen lists. being able to tap out your tokens each turn to draw cards, or just have them up as mana for interaction is so good.
    • Heirloom Blade - This is a sick card. Potential storm line would be Baylen, a sacc outlet like phyrexian altar, and the sword. Equip to a Hare, Sacc, find a hare, tap tokens for mana to play and equip. Repeat.
    • Temur Sabertooth - Sabertooth is a staple for Temur combos. In this line we could infinitely bounce a Hare using enough token made mana to activate the sabertooth and recast the Hare.

    • Cut:
      • Impact Tremors - This was a tough cut. But agate instigator is easier to tutor and scales in power with the offspring ability.
      • Throne of the God-Pharaoh - A pseudo ping effect. Tapping our tokens is essential making this deadly.
      • Warleader's Call - a redundant effect for consistency.
Originally this deck was going to be funny rabbit tribal with cards like Eldrazi Monument and Coat of Arms. These have been cut to focus on the storm game plan.
