Energy is such a cool mechanic, but it never had the dedicated support to make it worth a damn in EDH. Until now. Meet Beanie Boss, also known as Satya to some. Despite being in colors that are traditionally control-heavy, this guy's gameplan is decidedly different - we're going aggro!

So what does the deck do? The basic idea is that we want to win through combat, but even though the "Creative Energy" precon offers the option to build around token generation, I took the route of quick damage and value plays. Please note that even though it wasn't very good, the recent "Science!" precon donates a generous portion of its better cards to the build you see here.

The ideal would be to slam one or two decent creatures in your inital turns, maybe even get some ramp online, and by the time we play our commander (who conveniently has both haste and minor evasion) we want to immediately smash face with him and a token copy of the best other thing we've got lying around. Due to the wording of Satya's copy ability, attack triggers are not really what we want; instead we prefer valuable ETB triggers and combat damage triggers. The beauty here is that while the deck is pretty good at generating energy (30 of our cards do this, with most instances of this effect being repeatable), we don't necessarily need it to win via combat - it's a solid support theme in the deck. Some tokens might be worth spending energy on to keep them around for generating more value over time, whereas some others are irrelevant beyond their ETB effects, and some we actively want to die for even more value. It's easy to quickly bank lots of energy and save up for an explosive play down the line. Ever see an Electrostatic Pummeler go absolutely ham on somebody? Enjoy.

Speaking of which, winning through combat is nice, but often unreliable. Whenever someone at the table decides it's wrath o'clock we suffer a massive setback, so having a backup plan for closing out the game is essential. But then, they don't call Beanie Boss an Aetherflux Genius for nothing, so he's brought a hefty helping of instant-win combos! Because of course he has. This is Jeskai, after all. Here are the combos I identified:

  • Aethergeode Miner + Aetherstorm Roc / Decoction Module / Guide of Souls + Genesis Chamber (Inf creature tokens, inf ETB, inf LTB)
  • Aethergeode Miner + Gonti’s Aether Heart + Aetherstorm Roc / Decoction Module / Guide of Souls / Aether Refinery + Aether Revolt (Inf energy, inf noncombat damage, all opponents lose the game)
  • Gonti’s Aether Heart + Aether Refinery / Aetherstorm Roc / Decoction Module / Guide of Souls + Whirler Virtuoso (Inf tokens, inf ETB; inf energy with Aether Refinery)
  • Satya + Lightning Runner + Aether Refinery (Inf tokens, inf ETB, inf energy, inf combat)
  • Satya + Brudiclad + Port Razer (Inf combat, inf combat damage, inf ETB, inf creature tokens with haste, inf untap all creatures you control) (If you manage to find room in the deck for either Quasiduplicate or Rite of Replication, you've got another combo with Satya, Brudiclad and Lightning Runner.)

Not counting our commander, that's 12 combo pieces you can assemble in various ways to quickly win the game!

So the combo route is perfectly viable, but let's face it, winning by smashing face will probably feel more satisfying. Because we're an aggro deck, we need to make sure our creatures can push their damage through, so we've got some standard and some not-so-standard ways of keeping the board clear or clearing a path. While we have classic instant-speed removal, of course (I left out the ones that provide the enemy with a creature token, we don't want to enable them to block us at all), we also have access to various creatures whose ETBs and other abilities can slow down or outright hurt our opponents significantly; it's these creatures we want to copy with Satya and pay for the tokens to stick around. Having several copies of Aerial Extortionist, Swooping Pteranodon, Vengeful Ancestor or Terror of the Peaks will make your opponents sweat bullets for sure. There's a trick here: Sundial of the Infinite will allow you to keep the token copies around without paying energy! Just activate it once the sacrifice trigger is on the stack at end of turn. As for pushing through damage: Untap once with Aragorn on board, then attack with him and copy him with Satya. Yes, the token dies immediately to the legend rule, but its ETB still grants us Monarch status, and as such the original Aragorn's attack trigger makes all our attackers unblockable.

There are also a few cards to improve our evasion and strengthen our creatures. This is especially important at the point where Satya's menace doesn't grant him a free pass any longer and his stats get outclassed - beefing him up and giving him Flying or Unblockable is another factor in keeping our gameplan humming along. Cards like Akroma's Will or Legion Loyalty are for closing out the game via combat. The latter might be a tad inefficient, but I couldn't resist leaving it in. (The Sundial of the Infinite trick works for the Myriad copies, too! Just activate it once the sacrifice trigger is on the stack at end of combat. Now that's board growth!)

Bear in mind, this deck hasn't seen any playtesting yet. Maybe I'm off on some assumptions, particularly regarding tokens. A token multiplier such as Mondrak or Ojer Taq might be good to make Satya more threatening, for example. The deck could also use some more consistent card draw, even though it's not exactly underserved in that regard. We've got all the other basics covered, too: Sufficient ramp, a pair of boardwipes, some recursion (most notably Guardian Scalelord) and a single instance of graveyard hate, to keep those kinds of decks honest. As it stands, I'm excited to sleeve this up and see how it performs in my playgroup. Kaladesh block was a wild time back in the day, and I'm ever so happy to finally play around with Energy again!
