Let us start off by saying that this deck is very versatile, in many different ways. This is especially true with the generals you can use.

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind is playing that role, mainly because of his CMC and because he has hexproof. He, however, can be replaced with Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker, Phenax, God of Deception, or Szadek, Lord of Secrets. They all have benefits and they all do not change the impact of the deck.
