Dreno33 ~ took this to FNM last week and Tenacious Dead is a BEAST to say the least. Block, sac for Altar's Reap pay 2 and comes back tapped. Sac to Bubbling Cauldron to gain 4 but I have 2 Dark Prophecy on the field so I lose 2 and draw 2 cards.

I have actually tweeked the actual build IRL and took out the Drainpipe Vermin and now run 4 Pharika's Cure and 4 Tenacious Dead

In match 2 I was up against a UWX control deck with d-sphere etc and he pounced me in game one because of freakin Sphinx's Revelation . I sided out Dark Prophecy and sided in Erebos, God of the Dead and pummeled him the following 2 games. It was awesome.

Yea that was my thought as well, Drainpipe Vermin always felt underwhelming to say the least, much prefer Tenacious Dead and Pharika's Cure

This may sound crazy but you may want to consider dropping a Bogbrew Witch for Trading Post . All the times I've tried using the witch it seem to be a dead card so long as i have something else to play, so the possibility of two in hand is just awful. Trading post has some goofy little synergies with the other cards in this deck, like Bubbling Cauldron , Cartel Aristocrat , Dark Prophecy , and Immortal Servitude .

Electromancer - i can see why you would suggest Trading Post but it doesn't really bring anything to the deck. the only abilities i would use are the sac and artifact draw a card, and then the make a token thing. the tokens for Cartel Aristocrat and the card for well drawing cards. however, by itself post doesn't directly bring anything to the deck and as with the other suggestions i've gotten recently, what would i drop to make room. Dropping any of the other cards is detrimental to what i'm doing with the deck.

Even dropping a Bogbrew Witch is not optimal as she makes Festering Newt an even bigger threat. I can even stack 2 of them (something i often doing anyway) to kill ANY of the indestructible god cards with the SBA 0 toughness rule.

I do appreciate your input though. Thanks for taking a look.

Hey Bellock86, I've been playing the Festering Newt + Bogbrew Witch + Bubbling Cauldron combo for awhile and I wanted to ask how you think of Sign in Blood ? it's coming out for m15 again and I think it'd work wonders for this deck as I'm using it right now.

zenny123 - that is a good card, however Altar's Reap is better for the deck. If you found it to still be competitive to run both, share your changes(:

zenny123 ~ Altar's Reap and Sign in Blood may appear interchangeable but there are 3 major differences that are relevant for different reasons.

1) BB for SiB - though minor compared to the other 2 reasons I will list it still matters. Being able to keep a hand one black source and one white source is critical to the early turns of this deck. It insures that I can cast High Priest of Penance and Cartel Aristocrat which basically shuts most aggro down.

2) AR is not only card advantage but a sac outlet. The life loss from SiB is not a big deal but being able to reap on turn 2 and sac a newt to kill a mana dork or Judge's Familiar is pure advantage.

3) it combos with the other draw engine in the deck. Dark Prophecy . Imagine sacing a creature to reap, losing 1 life and drawing 3 cards. With sign in blood it's still only 2 cards. What I mean to say is that reap increases in value in the later game where SiB stays the same.

As to you stating that you can run them at the same time, I could see that but my concern there is what I take out. Every card in my list has proven to be very valuable in almost every match up.

My main concern with the deck is honestly losing my ravnica cards and Tenacious Dead . I don't think the deck can survive rotation and stay the same comboey craziness that I have now.

As Dreno33 said though if you have a counter argument I'm open to hearing (reading) it.

Bellock86 great points and I totally agree; I was just throwing it out there and you pointed out that at least getting one plains is crucial for getting off High Priest of Penance and Cartel Aristocrat so you can hunt for that and maybe something else with Sign in Blood . Like Pharika's Cure you could deal 2 damage to your opponent with SiB as well if you just need to finish the opponent off. Dark Prophecy has 3 solid Black so it's not like you can't afford to play SiB and maybe cut the Dark Pr. to 2 and Cartel to 2 to play 2 SiB's to even it out and maybe have more consistency just in case you don't have the cards you want in the beginning; Doing the Dark Pr. and Altar takes a couple turns to get it ready but SiB just takes 2 turns the least if you have the mana and it allows you to hunt for cards; all for consistency and to avoid sporadic draws more or less; just my thoughts on it. Once the next rotation comes along it might be hard to keep this deck intact but hopefully they come out with some neat cards~~

zenny123 - fair points as well. hmmmm. that is something i would need to test with. at the very least i can try it out and if it doesn't work at least you had sound logic. It could go either way so i will definitely test it out. thanks

don't forget that Black Cat is back and you should be running 4x of them either now or post rotation.

Dreno33 ~ Black Cat is not lost on me. That will take the place of Tenacious Dead come rotation. But we also have Khans to think about but unless something better comes out the cat will be in.

Also though I feel the need to say that my new card knowledge has suffered as june and part of july were extremely busy for me due to getting married, honeymoon and life in general. Are there any other cards that show promise from M15? I have had minimal time to dedicate to researching lately

Dreno33 says... #14

Uhh, the cards that come to mind (that would need plenty of play testing first!) are Unmake the Graves , Ulcerate , Necromancer's Stockpile , and Return to the Ranks .

Also, add 1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth . And now Caves of Koilos will be replacing your Godless Shrine s, but until then, you can have both, lol.

Return to the Ranks seems like a beastly card; wonder what the modern version of this deck would look like once Festering Newt , Bogbrew Witch , and Bubbling Cauldron rotate out completely; I'll still wanna keep this deck alive just to play for fun, the standard seems so stale with everyone running hexproof ugh; nothing original and just boring imo lol

Dreno33, zenny123, electromancer, Kilo and BearForce_02. I have decided to turn this into a modern deck. I don't expect it to win an Pro Tour or anything but i just need something to play and have a good time with. And since I have the core of the deck anyway it seemed a good a place as any to start.

Looks good, I'd run it. If I may, have you thought about Grave Pact or Debtors' Knell since you're gonna be saccing some creatures; might as well take some opposing creatures out.
